THE EARTH IN

SPACE

EARTH
Earth, our home planet, is a
world unlike any other. The third
planet from the sun, Earth is the
only place in the known
universe confirmed to host life.
With a radius of 3,959 miles,
Earth is the fifth largest planet
in our solar system, and it's the
only one known for sure to have
liquid water on its surface.

Let’s Think!

 How old is Earth?

 How did the Earth
get its name?
 Why is Earth the
only planet known
to support life?
 The SUN
 Compared with the billions of
other stars in the universe, the
sun is unremarkable. But for
Earth and the other planets that
revolve around it, the sun is a
powerful center of attention. It
holds the solar system
together; provides life-giving
light, heat, and energy to Earth;
and generates space weather.

Fun Facts about the Sun!

 Over one million Earths could fit

inside the Sun.
 One day the Sun will consume the
Earth.
 The Sun is almost a perfect
sphere.
 It takes eight minutes for light to
reach Earth from the Sun.
 The Sun is halfway through its life.
 The Sun rotates in the same
direction as the Earth.
 The Sun has a powerful magnetic
field. As the largest object in the
solar system, it holds everything
in place.
EARTH-SUN Relationship
 It is Earth’s relationship
to the sun, and the
amount of light it
receives, that is
responsible for the
seasons and biodiversity.
The amount of sun a
region receives depends
on the tilt of Earth’s axis
and not its distance from
the sun.

tilt?)

SOLAR ENERGY
 Solar power is energy
from the sun that is
converted into
thermal or electrical
energy. Solar energy
is the cleanest and
most abundant
renewable energy
source available.
SOLAR ENERGY
 When the radiant energy of the
sun is converted to heat and
electricity, it can provide energy
to residences and businesses,
and even power vehicles.

 Now might be a good time to

learn about solar energy
advantages and explore adding
a solar energy system to your
home.
 Then you can decide: Is solar
energy worth it?
SOLAR ENERGY
Advantages
 Solar energy is a
renewable energy source
and reduces carbon
emissions.
 Solar energy can reduce
your home’s electricity
bill
 Solar panels have low
maintenance costs
 Solar energy can
generate electricity in any
climate
SOLAR ENERGY
Disadvantages
 The high initial costs of
installing panels
 Solar energy storage is
expensive
 Solar doesn’t work for
every roof type
 Solar panels are
dependent on sunlight
GREENHOUSE EFFECT
 The greenhouse effect is
a process that occurs
when gases in Earth's
atmosphere trap the
Sun's heat. This process
makes Earth much
warmer than it would be
without an atmosphere.
The greenhouse effect is
one of the things that
makes Earth a
comfortable place to live.
How are humans impacting the
greenhouse effect?
 Human activities are changing Earth's natural
greenhouse effect. Burning fossil fuels like coal and
oil puts more carbon dioxide into our atmosphere.

 NASA has observed increases in the amount of

carbon dioxide and some other greenhouse gases in
our atmosphere. Too much of these greenhouse
gases can cause Earth's atmosphere to trap more
and more heat. This causes Earth to warm up.
What reduces the greenhouse effect
on Earth?
 Just like a glass greenhouse, Earth's greenhouse is
also full of plants! Plants can help to balance the
greenhouse effect on Earth. All plants — from
giant trees to tiny phytoplankton in the ocean —
take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen.

 The ocean also absorbs a lot of excess carbon

dioxide in the air. Unfortunately, the increased
carbon dioxide in the ocean changes the water,
making it more acidic. This is called ocean
acidification.
 More acidic water can be harmful to many ocean
creatures, such as certain shellfish and coral.
Warming oceans — from too many greenhouse
gases in the atmosphere — can also be harmful to
these organisms. Warmer waters are a main cause
of coral bleaching.
THE ENERGY BUDGET

 Earth’s energy budget represents the balance

between the amount of energy incoming to
Earth from the Sun and the amount of energy
outgoing from Earth back to space. The
energy budget provides a way to account for
all the energy entering and leaving the Earth
system.
Incoming and Outgoing Energy
 Earth strives to maintain a balance between the overall
amount of incoming and outgoing energy at the top of
the atmosphere. This is called Earth’s energy budget or
Earth's radiation budget.
 Earth receives incoming energy from the Sun. Earth also
emits energy back to space. For Earth’s temperature to
be stable over long periods of time (for the energy
budget to be in balance), the amount incoming energy
and outgoing energy must be equal. If incoming energy
is more than outgoing energy, Earth will warm. If
outgoing energy is greater than incoming energy, Earth
will cool.
