EC305.23 1
RECAP

• In the last class we have discussed single side band

technique and in today's class we are going to know

about suppressed carrier modulation.

EC305.23 2
Objectives

• After completion of this topic the student will be able to

know about

• How much power is saved in

carrier suppression modulation system.

EC305.23 3
INTRODUCTION

• Single side band modulation and carrier suppression

modulation are the parts of A.M. system.
• Side bands are transmitted to send the intelligence

and the carrier for helping the demodulation process.

• The carrier contains much more power than the side
bands , hence a lot of power is wasted at the transmitting
end.

EC305.23 4
Side Band Power Versus Carrier Power

• The power in the side bands depends on the value of

the modulation index.
• The greater the percentage modulations, the higher the
side band power.
• The power in each side band is given by
PLSB = PUSB = Pc m2/4 ( since P t = Pc+PLSB+PUSB)

• For 100% modulation, the value of m = 1

• Then the power in each side band =1/4 = 25% of carrier
EC305.23 5
power.
• For two side bands, the power is = 50% of the carrier
power.
For Example
• If carrier power is = 100w
• Modulation = 100%
• Then power is side bands =(PLSB +PUSB) = 50w
• The total power transmitted = 100 + 50 =150w
• From this carrier power is 2/3 of total power.
• Side band power = 1/3 of total power.

Brief Explanation of SSB Suppressed Carrier
Modulation

• In this method, the carrier and one side band are

completely eliminated.

• It does not matter whether the USB or LSB is used

• How ever the carrier must be regenerated and re-inserted

at the receiving end to reconvert the intelligence to its
original form during the process of demodulation.

EC305.23 8
Double Side Band Suppressed Carrier Modulation

• In AM System, if the carrier is suppressed and

information is transmitted by both side bands then the
system is called double side band (DSB) suppressed
carrier modulation.
• The main disadvantage of DSB suppressed carrier
modulation is the difficulty involved in the demodulation
process.
• If the phase of regenerated carrier at the receiver is not
matched with that at transmitter, severe distortion will
occur to the intelligence.
• To ensure correct phase relation (Pilot carrier is
introduced).
