Recap

In the previous topics, you have learnt about

• Single tuned circuit and its frequency response.

• Double tuned circuit and its frequency response.

• Application of above circuits.

 In this topic, you will learn band width , quality factor

of a tuned circuit.

EC305.46 2
Objectives:

Upon completion of this topic, you will be able to

• Know about the Quality factor Q.

• Know about the B.W of a tuned circuit.
• Know the effect of Q on B.W.
• Comparison between series and parallel resonant circuit.

EC305.46 3
Quality factor (Q)

• The ratio of inductive reactance to the resistance with

reference to a coil is known as the quality factor of the
coil.

• The quality of the resonant circuit is indicated by the

factor Q that is equal to the ratio of total reactance to the
total resistance of the circuit.

EC305.46 4
• It determines the sharpness of the frequency response
curve of a tuned circuit.

• The higher the ratio of the reactance at resonance to the

series resistance, the higher is the Q and the sharper the
resonance curve.

EC305.46 5
• The Q for the RL series circuit is given by Q=WL/R.

• The Q for the series RC circuit is Q=1/WCR.

• The impedance across the parallel resonant circuit is Q

times the inductive reactance at the resonant frequency.

• At resonance the impedance Zen=Q.XL.

EC305.46 6
Bandwidth

• Band width of a tuned circuit is defined as the band of

frequencies which lies between two points on either side
of resonance frequency.

• The B.W of a tuned circuit depends on the Q of the

resonant circuit.

• The width of the resonant band of frequencies center

around fr is called B.W of the tuned circuit.

EC305.46 7
• The B.W of a tuned circuit is given by B.W = f2 – f1 .
resonant.. frequency
• The B.W is also given as B.W = fr/Q. = quility.. facyor

• The B.W of a tuned circuit depends on the factor fr and Q.

EC305.46 8
Bandwidth

• The B.W is measured between two frequencies f1 and f2

at 3dB down points of the frequency response.

• These two points are also referred as two half power

points. The power at these points is 50% of the total
power.

Effect of ‘Q’ on B.W

• Higher the value of ‘ Q’ for the same resonant frequency

the lesser the B.W .

• At higher Q the slope is sharper for the sides of the

response curve.

• At higher Q the amplitude of the curve is high.

EC305.46 11
Comparison between series and parallel
resonant circuits:

Series resonant circuit: Parallel resonant circuit:

• Fr = 1/2¶√(LC). • Fr = 1/2¶√(LC).
• I maximum at fr with Φ of • I minimum at fr with Φ of
00 . 00 .
• Impedance Z minimum • Impedance Z maximum
at fr.
at fr.
• Q =XL/rs.
• Q =XL/rs.
• B.W=fr/Q.
• B.W=fr/Q.

EC305.46 12
Problems:

1) An LC circuit resonant at 2000KHzhas Q of 100 .Find

the total B.W and the edge frequencies f1 and f2.

B.W= fr/Q=2000KHz/100=20 KHz.

f1=fr – B.W/2=2000-10=1990KHz.
f2=fr + B.W/2=2000+10=2010KHz

EC305.46 13
2) a parallel LC circuit tuned to 200KHz with a 350 µH has a
measured Zeq of 17,600 Ω calculate Q.

XL =2¶×200×103×350×10-6=440Ω.

Q= Zeq/XL=17,600/440=40.
