MEETING PEOPLE FOR THE FIRST TIME
Greetings are used to say hello in English. It’s common to use different greetings depending on
whether you greet a friend, family or a business associate. When you meet friends, you may
use informal greetings. Formal greetings are also used with people you do not know very well.
When introducing yourself to someone for the first time, especially in a formal situation, you
may use the greetings below.
Formal:
Hello, it’s a pleasure to meet you.
(it’s) (very) nice/glad/happy to meet you.
Nice/Glad/Happy to meet you.
How do you do?
Example:
a. John : Ken. Meet Steve
Ken : Hello, it’s a pleasure to meet you.
Steve : How do you do Ken.
Ken : How do you do.
The question ‘How do you do’ is only a formality. In other words, the question does not need
to be answered. Rather, it is a standard phrase used when meeting someone for the first time.
Tom : Peter, I’d like to introduce you to Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith this is Peter Thompson.
1. NAME
The most common question for name is
What’s your name?
After studying all the language expressions to introduce themselves, the students have to make
a video containing a self-introduction. The students must include all their personal data,
achievements (activities), as well as their family information in the self-introduction task. The
students are free to choose the setting of their video, and to use properties (photos or people)
that support their video task. There is no limitation on how long the video is. Be creative in
making the video.
The students have one week to do the task.
Note: The students may discuss with the teacher about the task.
