WHAT IS CENSORSHIP?

• Censorship is the control of information and ideas circulated with in a society.


• Censorship in all its form is often unjustifiable and is used to stop truths or ideas emerge,
which draw attention to the powerful people or governments or undermine ideology. This is
inexcusable.
CENSORSHIP CONTROLS;
• Information which come from Books, Plays, TV, Radio, Films, News Reports, Internet And
other forms of communication.
WHY IS SOME INFORMATION
CENSORED?
• There are many reasons for censorship. Some information needs to be censored for legal
reason or to protect people such as victims or families of accused crime.

• The reason for an item to be censored can fall to these three main categories;
These are;
• Blasphemy offences against religious principles
- is the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred objects,
or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider blasphemy to
be a religious crime
Example
- Some school in Australia he banned the harry potter book as they are believed to go against
the Christian ethos as it contains references to magic and witchcrafts. (Branley, 2012)
• Obscenity. Often relate to sexual nature of an item being considered offensive but also can
refer to obscene language or graphic violence.
Example
In 1973 a plaster of paris replica of Michelangelo's David displayed in a Myers in Melbourne
had its genitals covered after complaints. (Williams and Dillon, 1993, p.12)
• Sedition content that is considered to incite revolt, defamation or action against the
government. Seditious content form is called seditious libel. Both sedition and seditious libel
are criminal acts under state law.

There was a strong focus on censoring seditious material between 1920 and 1950, particularly
material supporting communism. (Douglas, 2002)

SELF CENSORSHIP
• We all use self censorship in our daily lives. We choose what we say to people. But you
don’t usually tell your parents the same thing as we hangout with out friends. This is a self
censorship.

• It is important thing to keep In minds that when using social media. An image or comment
posted on social media can be potentially seen by any anonymous people.
