VALVES
What is valve

■ A valve is a device or natural

object that regulates, directs or
controls the flow of a
fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized
solids, or slurries)
Major components of a valve
Operations of valve
Types of valves on the base of
mechanism
■ Linear stem motion

■ Rotatory shaft motion

Linear stem motion valves:
Gate valve
■ It is a linear motion
valve used to start or
stop fluid flow it is
not used to regulate
or throttle flow. In
the up position, the
valve is open. In the
down position, the
valve is closed.
Globe valve

■ A globe valve is so
called because of their
spherical design. It is
a linear motion valve
used to stop, start,
and regulate fluid flow
,Therefore, the globe
valve may be used for
both stopping and
starting fluid flow and
for regulating flow
Needle valve
■ A needle valve is
designed for precise
flow control. Its
primary feature is a
slender, tapered
plunger (the needle)
that fits into a seat,
allowing for fine
adjustments of flow
Diaphram valve

■ A diaphragm valve
uses a flexible
diaphragm to control
fluid flow. The
diaphragm is
typically made from
rubber or a similar
material and acts as
a barrier between
the fluid and the
valve's mechanical
components.
ROTATORY SHIFT MOTION VALVES :
Ball valve

■ A ball valve controls

fluid flow using a
spherical disc (the ball)
with a hole through its
centre.
Butterfly valve

■ A disk mounted on a
rotating shaft controls
the flow by turning the
disc either parallel or
perpendicular to the
flow. It allows for a fast
shutoff and requires
less material and
space than other
valves.
SAFETY VALVES:
Check Valve

■ A check valve allows fluid to

flow in one direction while
preventing backflow. Its
operation is based on the
movement of a disk, ball, or
flap that opens and closes
based on the flow direction.
Pressure relief valve

■ Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)

and Pressure Safety valve
(PSV) prevent equipment
damage by relieving
accidental over-
pressurization of fluid
systems. They are designed
in such a way so as to
provide protection from over-
pressure in steam, gas, air
and liquid lines.
