LESSON 1
WELD CARBON STEEL PLATES IN FLAT POSITION
(1F)
QUARTER 4 – SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING
PERFORM STRINGER OR LAYERED
BEADS IN ACCORDANCE WITH WELDING
STANDARDS
Welding is a common process for joining
metals using a large variety of
applications.
A fillet welding is a closed weld, which
means the base metal is not cut through
to accommodate weld metal.

Welding (5’s)
PROCEDURE
Wear suitable protective clothing
Prepare the tools, equipment, and materials
needed
Set up welding machine
Lay the fillet in 1F position
Strike an arc on the first line of the plate using
E6013 electrode.
PROCEDURE
When the arc is established, hold the electrode at a
90-degree angle.
Note: manipulate the electrode using circular weaving
motion. Maintain the width of bead at 8mm and arc
length at 2-3mm.
Chip the slag and brush the bead with wire brush and
continue welding until you reach the end of the line.
Clean and inspect the weld for spatters, slag
inclusion and uniformity of beads.
