LESSON 1

WELD CARBON STEEL PLATES IN FLAT POSITION

(1F)

QUARTER 4 – SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING

PERFORM STRINGER OR LAYERED
BEADS IN ACCORDANCE WITH WELDING
STANDARDS
Welding is a common process for joining
metals using a large variety of
applications.

A fillet welding is a closed weld, which

means the base metal is not cut through
to accommodate weld metal.

WELDING PROCEDURES IN
SINGLE PASS FILLET JOINT
IN FLAT (1F) POSITION
MATERIALS/SUPPLIES

 Mild steel plate, 7mm x 40mm x 120mm

(1pc)
 Electrode E-6013, 3.2mm diameter
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
 AC welding machine  Welding gloves
with accessories  Welding apron
 Chipping hammer  Welding goggles
 Steel brush
 Welding tong
 Portable grinder
 Welding helmet/shield
OPERATIONS NEEDED
Marking Cooling
Cutting Deslagging
Cleaning Testing
Tacking Housekeeping
Welding (5’s)
PROCEDURE
 Wear suitable protective clothing
 Prepare the tools, equipment, and materials
needed
 Set up welding machine
 Lay the fillet in 1F position
 Strike an arc on the first line of the plate using
E6013 electrode.
PROCEDURE
 When the arc is established, hold the electrode at a
90-degree angle.

Note: manipulate the electrode using circular weaving

motion. Maintain the width of bead at 8mm and arc
length at 2-3mm.
 Chip the slag and brush the bead with wire brush and
continue welding until you reach the end of the line.
 Clean and inspect the weld for spatters, slag
inclusion and uniformity of beads.
