Homework: Analyze videos

On the class blog you will find a post in the category homework 1: Practice by analyzing videos. This is a group project. You choose one video and analyze it (you are provided an example). Each video is analyzed by using Friedmanns method of concept development. Hence, we are analyzing how good is the concept.

Overview: Structuring your story

Story structure: the beginning, middle and end dramatic structure and other types of structures interview, testimonials opening (how can you open the scene) Rhythm: how will you set it? by the length of your sequences they should not be repetitive or too long If you keep at one place for too long you will lose the audiences attention Most sequences are 2-3 minutes long/in one location max (in a feature film) Ask your video editing teacher about it as this related to editing skill as well

Tempo: what is happening in the sequence? That is what dictates the tempo the activity that happens within it. What will you give more fast tempo and what slow? When you are heading to climatic point in your script you increase the tempo, your scenes are shorter and more packed with action. After you reach the climate, you will slow down your tempo. Each scene has set of actions; you might want to list them to have a control over them play with their order (index cards).

Overview: Structuring your story

I need to see all of that in the script you create. It is better you start writing as the rule of good writing is REWRITING. Transitions: how do you switch from one sequence to the next (again something which should be thought in the video editing class). Examples: You switch from two similar/opposite ideas/objects (from an exterior to interior, from noise to peaceful space, from a park to the forest etc. Similar keywords/topic can provide a good transition as well

Overview: Structuring your story

Or a visual metaphor (can provide a good transition) - I will look for good transitions when grading PLOT: The story does not need to have dramatic structure to have the climax point etc. It can be arranged around different events/actions which you selected to tell your story (interviewing technique). - what will you include/exclude from the story/video? How will you tell your story through visuals, sound, graphicsor POV.
