The Three States of
Matter
( Solid, Liquid and
Gas)
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion the pre-service teacher will
be able to:
• Understand what matter is.
• Know what are the three states of matter are and
their
properties.
• Know how to classify items/objects as solids, liquids,
or gases.
What is Matter?
The basic definition:
Matter is anything that takes up
space.
Three States of Matter
What is a Solid?
• A solid is the simplest state of matter.
A solid has these three main properties:
• It has a definite shape.
• It has a definite mass.
• It has a definite volume.
A solid will always look the same and take up the
same amount of space.
Solids have other special properties;
Comparing marble and sponge even if both are solids yet is
diferent from each other. Some solids are hard like the marble
and others are soft like sponge.
Hardness is the ability of solids to resist breaking and scraping.
Jewelleries such as rings, bracelets and necklaces are made up
of metals, gold, silver, or platinum. These metals can be designed
and formed into beautiful accessories because they are malleable.
The ability of metals to be hammered into diferent shapes is called
malleability.
Another unique property of metallic solid is ductility,
the ability to be dawn into wire like copper, aluminum and
steel. Copper is the metal used for electrical wiring.
It can also be formed into strips or shavings. Other solids are
brittle like chalk, conerete and glass, Britleness is the
property that makes solids easy to break when a force is
applied to it.
What is a Liquid?
►A liquid is the most fluid and ever-changing
state of
matter.
A liquid has these three main properties:
• It does not have a definite shape.
• It has a definite mass.
• It has a definite volume.
►A liquid will always take up the same amount of
space and take the shape of its container.
What is a Gas?
A gas is the most complex and difficult to understand
state of matter.
►A gas has these three main properties:
• It does not have a definite shape.
• It does not have a definite mass.
• It does not have a definite volume.
A gas does not always weight the same or take up the same
amount of space.
► However, like a liquid, a gas will always take the shape of
its container, no matter the size or shápe of that container.
