CHOROPLETH MAP
What is choropleth map.
A choropleth map is a type of thematic map that uses color or
shading to represent data values of a particular geographic
area.
Example such as
• World population
• Vegetation
• Land use
Figure-1: World population
density.
Steps to create the choropleth map.
BLANK
1 SLIDE
In constructing a choropleth map is to determine the appropriate value to be associated with each area on the map.
2
This is usually obtained from source such as a census or, less frequently, a special study
3
Appropriate symbols and next selected to represent each of the categories .
4
the symbolization may consists of different tones, patterns, colors or a combination of all three.
Application of choropleth
map
Type of data.
It has to be a valid and appropriate. The value shown on
choropleth maps must be independent of the size of the area to
which they apply.
For example,
the annual precipitation of
Bangladesh district wise
Figure-2: Annual precipitation of
Bangladesh.
Nominaldata.
Nominal data.
Nominal information is portrayed on a choropleth map simply by placing
an appropriate symbol over the surface of each zone. In some case, the
categorization of each data zone is obvious. On a political map.
For example the different national territories.
Figure-3: World political map.
Ordinal data.
►Ordinal data is a type of data that
represents categorical variables with a
specific order or ranking.
►When ordinal or ratio data are represented
on a choropleth map, a range of gray values
is used to differentiate between areas.
►The shades of gray must differ from one
another considerably in order to be
distinguishable on the map. Figure-4: Population
density.
Ordinal data.
The use of differing patterns to indicate relative values is
not encouraged .

Data classes.
Using some of these statistical
process we can divide our into
classes.
Such as
• Standard deviation
• Mean
• Median
• Intervals

DASYMETRIC MAP
What is dasymetric map.
A dasymetric map is a type of
thematic map that represents data
in a more accurate and precise
manner than traditional choropleth
maps.
For example
• Population density
• Annual precipitation
• Crime severity
Figure-8: Dhaka
population density.
Steps to create a dasymetric map.
1 •Dividation 3.To calculate productive area by using
the following formula:
Here, D= density of the overall region
2 •Consideration
= estimated density of region m
= fraction of total area in region
1-= fraction of total area in region n =
3 •Construction
density assigned to region n
4 •Final output
APPLICATION OF DASYMETRIC MAP
Type of data.
In a dasymetric map, there could be
nominal, ordinal and others are
represented
Population density: In dasymetric
mapping, as it can be used to
allocate data values to subareas
based on the number of people living
within each subarea.
Example such as
• Land use
• Vegetation cover
• Socioeconomic characteristic Figure-9: America
population density.
Nominal data.
In this datatype, here the name of any
thing which could be able to represent in
the map are shown.
Types of land use: This could include
categories such as residential,
commercial, industrial, or agricultural.
Example such as
• Type of crime
• Type of business
• Type of natural features
Figure-10: Land use
dasymetric map.
Ordinal data.
Health status: Health data
could be categorized by levels of
health status, such as excellent,
good, fair, or poor.
Example such as
• Income level
• Crime severity
• Education level

status of Bangladesh.
Advantages and disadvavtages of choropleth
