CONCEPTUAL AND
THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORKS
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students are
expected to:
a.differentiate the conceptual and theoretical
frameworks;

b.construct conceptual and theoretical

frameworks based on relevant theories and
literature; and

c.appreciate the importance of strong theoretical

foundations in research.
Conceptual Framework
• It shows the process that will be conducted in the study.
It consists of ideas and theories that are directly related
to the study.

• A conceptual framework represents the researcher's

understanding of how different variables in a study
relate to one another.

• It is often illustrated using a diagram or flowchart to

show these relationships.
Key Features of a Conceptual
Framework:
• Based on concepts and ideas drawn from existing
literature.
• Defines the research variables and explains their
relationships.
• Provides a visual representation of how the study
will proceed.
• Usually created by the researcher based on personal
understanding of the topic.
Steps in writing the conceptual
framework:
1. Write all the input (the things done prior to research),
process (the steps to be done), and output (expected
product).
2. Present in paradigm and show the connections.
You may include external terms.

3. Discuss the connections of all the terminologies in

paragraph form.
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

A theoretical framework is broader than a

conceptual framework. It is based on existing
theories from previous studies and provides the
foundation for understanding the research topic.
Key Features of a Theoretical
Framework:
• Based on established theories from experts in
the field.
• Provides a scientific explanation for the study.
• Helps in understanding why and how
variables are related.
• Guides the research methodology and
hypothesis.
Steps in writing the theoretical
framework:
1. Select two theories for your research.

2. From the two theories, get three precepts per theory

and discuss their relevance to your research.
3. Discuss the connection of all the precepts.

4. Present it in paradigm.
How do conceptual and
theoretical frameworks
contribute to the credibility of
a study?
How does a conceptual
framework guide the
formulation of research
questions and objectives?
ACTIVITY
Go to you respective research groups and make a theoretical
