Unit 6, lesson 1

What are Earth’s major

systems?
P. 366 - 387
A cycle is a series of events or
processes that is repeated again and
again, always in the same order
Why is the water we drink today the same
water that was on Earth millions of years ago?

Because the Earth is a closed system

and the water is going through its
continuous cycle.
Why does the amount of water remain
same on the earth all the time?

Water continually evaporates,

condenses, and precipitates, and on a
basis, evaporation approximately
equals precipitation.
Earth Layers
The earth is not made
up of one big solid
rock.
The Earth is divided
into four main layers:

1- Crust
2- Mantle
3- Outer core
4- Inner core
The crust
 Thin,Outer Layer
 – Layer we live on

It is similar to the shell of an

egg and the peel of an apple
because it is very thin
Composition - Crust
Broken into 2 different types:
Oceanic
– Under Oceans
– Thinner
Continental
– Under Continents
– Thicker

The crust of the continents is almost three times

as thick as the crust under oceans.
The Mantle
- The mantle is the
layer below the crust.
- It is much thicker than
the crust, at almost 3000
km thick.
- Made of Iron and
Magnesium
What about the rocks
inside ?
As we go deeper in the mantle the
temperature rises and rocks are hot
Outer Core
- The core of the
Earth is like a ball
of very hot metals.
- The outer core is
liquid.
- The outer core is
made up of iron and
Nickel.
Where the magnetic field of the
earth is created ?
- In the outer core
Inner Core
- Solid Metal Layer
- Iron and Nickel
- Extreme Pressure
causes the particles
of rock to be
packed very tightly
Page.425
Why are the rocks in the inner core solid
even though the temperature is so high ?

Because the high pressure in

the inner core causes the
particles of rock to be packed
very tightly

How organic material is

WHAT IS the rock
cycle ?
 The changing of rocks from one kind to
another is called the rock cycle.
 Each type of rock can be changed into
another type of rock.
Sedimentary rocks

Weathering

The rocks change into

Metamorphic rocks.
