Analyzing the usage of the term and comparing it to other symbolical terms in
Mystagogy, the author attempts to reconsider the possibility of bringing back the concept
of iconicity into the contemporary ecclesiology, wherefrom it was removed after the ico
noclastic controversy. After deviding Mistagogy into thematic units, the author notes that
Maximus uses the term (and the terms derived from it) in a different manner than the
term (and the terms derived from it). When he speaks of the Church herself, Ma
ximus uses the first group of terms, and when he speaks of certain liturgical realities the
second one. The usage of the first group of terms is always related to the concept of the unity
of differences, in different ways. A connection has been observed between this concept and
the concept of overcoming divisions, by which the Church identifies herself with Christ, for
she performs the same act as he does. The second group of terms is related to pointing at the
eschatological being of the Church, which the author names the specific symbolism. The
se two different aspects of iconicity are mutually connected in the understanding of Church
as the icon of the eschaton in history, through the concept of the logoi? of beings and the
personal presence of Christ.
