ME335, Fall 2012, Quiz 9

Name _______________________________________

You have 18 minutes to complete this quiz. 1. Assuming gravity is approximately constant with altitude, and using a lift coefficient C L = 0.48, what cruising speed is required to keep an airplane at level flight if it has a total wing span of b = 30 ft (tip to tip) and a chord of D = 5.5 ft (i.e., platform area = b x D) and weighing 8100 lbf at sea level and 10,000 ft. See the table for density vs. altitude at the back of this exam.

2. Fig. 22 on the back of the exam shows the drag coefficient for a typical air foil. For the airplane above and assuming the airfoil thickness is 0.18D = 1 ft. What power P = FDU must the engines produce for level flight at sea level and 10,000 ft, where FD is the drag force and U is the speed you computed in Part 1. As per Fig. 22, ReD = UD/air. Assume air = 1.57 x 10-4 ft2/s.
