Chan-wook Park has slowly become one of the most interesting voices in international cinema, with his most notable efforts being The Vengeance Trilogy, which included the instant classic OLDBOY, and IM A CYBORG, BUT THATS OK. Now he takes his vision to America with his English language debut, STOKER. The result is an atmospheric psychological thriller that starts when a mother and daughter, India, played by Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowsa, grieve over the loss of the familys patriarch. Soon Indias strange uncle (Matthew Goode) suspiciously comes to move in. Excitement for OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL has grown large since the first images were released for Sam Raimis imaginative prequel to the seminal 1939 classic THE WIZARD OF OZ. The movie stars James Franco as Oscar, a Kansas con artist thrust into the magical land of Oz. There he must fight and outwit the likes of the evil sorceress, not just a sucker on the road, to survive. There were skeptics, but the movie looks and feels like it wholeheartedly belongs in the cinematic realm of the original OZ, which isnt an easy accomplishment. Also starring Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams as Glinda, OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL looks to be a feast for the eyes.

The voice talents of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener and Cloris Leachman lend themselves to this prehistoric story of a family who are forced to flee their cave after an earthquake destroys their home. After it strikes they face the open road where every turn yields new dangers. Fortunately another wandering Caveman offers to help them reach safety in a distant land. While the disaster continues to change the world around them the family must stick together to survive. Filled with eye-popping animation and wit THE CROODS is a fresh and funny ride through the stone age.

Theres not much you can say about SPRING BREAKERS that will make any logical sense. Its written and directed by Harmony Korine (GUMMO, MISTER LONELY) whose films shed a rare light on Americas dysfunctional, nihilistic and sociopathic population. His films are hard to digest and even harder to ignore. Korines latest, SPRING BREAKERS, feels decidedly different than anything the filmmaker has ever done. It follows four college girls who want to get away from their empty dorm during spring break. Problem is they have no money. After robbing a restaurant the girls go off to hit the beach and live the spring break of their dreams. There the cops bust them, but luckily a local gangster, Alien (James Franco) is there to bail em out and make the girls part of his entourage. Korine uses the colorful backdrop of spring break to juxtapose the ugliness lying underneath it all. SPRING BREAKERS is crazy, original, toxic, and mind blowing. (R.J. LaForce)

Tina Fey and Paul Rudd star in this intelligent, quirky comedy. Portia (Fey) is an uptight Princeton admissions officer who spends her day recruiting students for the prestigious university. One day she receives an unexpected call from a college classmate (Rudd) who wants her to recruit one of his students. He runs an alternative high school and it turns out he believes that his impressive student might be Portias son that she gave up for adoption. Soon Portia decides to find out and get close to him, even it means putting her career on the line by altering his transcript.

Almost 20 years after it first blew the minds of audiences Steven Spielbergs JURASSIC PARK still remains one of the most awe-inspiring films from the cinematic king of inspiring awe. And now its coming back to the big screen in 3D!! At the time of its release the films groundbreaking effects were the most realistic and amazing moviegoers had ever seen, yet what makes the film still hold up to todays lofty technological standards was the combination of CGI with animatronics. The result is a film that feels nostalgic without looking dated. The story, part sci-fi, part horror, part action, is pure Spielberg. It also has one of the best and most underrated scores the great John Williams ever composed and a cast that features the unlikely combination of Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Samuel L. Every week were putting together a new mix tape of 80s tunes to sing and dance to. Youll get your fix of crazy outfits, rebellious young female pop stars, hair bands, and some good ol fashioned rock n roll all in one show! Every music video is hand subtitled so you wont just dance, youll also be singing along at the top of your lungs. Each week well also have an assortment of extra props and favors to make the show a party, so expect plenty of glow sticks, balloons, streamers and more. Oh yeah! And because thats not enough excitement well also have our emcees open each show with a karaoke contest, so you can come up on stage and show off for a chance to win Alamo prizes! Each night they hit the town or a house party with two things in mind: getting girls and having drinks. Sounds like the life, right? Except that mopey Mike has recently moved to the City of Angels in hopes of getting a job and, more importantly, over his ex-girlfriend. His best friend, Trent tries to get him back in the game one cocktail at a time. Jon Favreaus script deftly observes its flawed characters while remaining consistently, genuinely funny and gives the one of the most honest cinematic depictions of L.A. life. She quit show business for several years because she couldnt find her passion for performing anymore. When she made her comeback, a lot of her audience didnt come back to her. It sounds like the sad story of so many great artists. But it wasnt all in vain. She was able to communicate a level of emotion in her music that few others could even approach. When this blond Irishwoman sang soul music, she sang it like a woman whose heart had been ripped out, when she sang about love she made you see it the way she did, a beautiful dream forever disappearing over the horizon. This show brings you an assortment of music clips featuring Dusty Springfield at her best - and it goes beyond the hits to show her great versatility and power.

Lewiss BLOOD FEAST, MARDI GRAS MASSACRE is a no-budget 1970s cesspool that oozes with illogical sleaze and technical ineptitude. A psychopathic killer kidnaps hookers from the New Orleans gutters so he can sacrifice them to an Aztec god. Plus, he drives a station wagon. There is also a pimp who plays air-keyboards, a brawl that happens in fake slow motion, and music that would have been rejected for use on an episode of PEOPLES COURT. Obviously, all of this stuff defiles common sense and guarantees your entertainment. Officially deemed a VIDEO NASTY in Britain, this trash-gore obscurity plays out so irrationally that its a wonder how it was ever conceived. Miss this screening and fail at humanity! (Joseph A. A hive of disfigured mutants emerge from beneath the Golden Gate bridge to kill at will. This forgotten film is an incredibly senseless and bizarre excuse for teen slaughter, and thats just fine. No origin or explanation is given for the creatures, each of which is a misshapen variation on a basic theme: theres a hirsute neanderthal, a gruesome surgeon, a lumbering samurai and even a leather daddy biker beast who chain-drags a mohawked teen behind his cycle when the monsters invade a high school dance. The titular maniacs seem to share a common mind and have highlighter-green blood. Shuffling among their ranks is a dwarven cycloptic dinosaur that kills with a metal hook. Aimless, inspired bullshit that was released in the Philippines as EVIL DEAD WARRIORS for absolutely no goddamn reason. PLUS!: Look at the directors last name. How embarrassing. (Zack Carlson)

Do you like watching white people with problems? Do you like seeing slow motion utilized for all the wrong reasons? Do you like watching an incredibly cute Saint Bernard with a huge head terrorize the kid from WHOS THE BOSS? Of course you do. Stephen King felt the same way, because he once referred to this sweat-soaked nail-biter as, A ferocious interpretation of my most accomplished novel, built upon a near-symphonic cornucopia of imminent dread. OK, fine. Stephen King never said that. But Im saying this: CUJO is a fucking awesome movie!!! Starring Dee Wallace (E.T., THE HILLS HAVE EYES), Billy Jacoby (JUST ONE OF THE GUYS), and Danny Pintauro (yes, its Jonathan from WHOS THE BOSS!!!), CUJO is dumb, overblown, terrifying, and filled with a constant sense of doom. And thats not just because of the rabies-infested juggernaut himself. This movie also addresses classic 80s social hang-ups like adultery, spousal abuse, and men in short-shorts playing tennis. Normally, when a priest hangs himself, its cause for celebration. But in the case of this Italian blood-chiller, said act opens up a gateway to the darkest corners of the Netherworld, unleashing a rabid bounty of demons, zombies, spastic fireballs and even less sensible threats to mankind. The requisite clueless American lead is Christopher George of PIECES, who faces paranormal annihilation with a wink and a grin as everyone around him is torn to quivering chunks. This unrepentant humanity-destroyer is easily the best of the late-70s/early 80s Euro-horror avalanche, cutting through all competition with a thousand vicious, barbaric fists formed of sheer hatred, sweaty perversity and shrieking meat. Up yours, Dario Argento! Here, true Italian terrormaster Lucio Fulci writes and directs the most sanity-free exploration into Hell ever captured on camera, rich with unholy possession, power drill trepanation, brain-mangling squishery, inflatable sex doll sorcery and a truly unforgettable segment in which a teenage girl bleeds from the eyes while vomiting up her entire digestive tract. Almost every single high school horror movie involves a shadowy figure stalking nubile young ladies through the halls of lower learning. If that sounds like a formula for entertainment, youll never run out of distractions. However, if youre looking for the one exception, hunker down to this harrowing rager that features none of the above. Christ, it doesnt even take place at a high school! Instead, were treated to the ruckus-raising adventures of four juvenile delinquents as theyre chased through the darkest reaches of a swampland hellhole by their female teacher! HELL HIGH was shot by a one-time-only gore-obsessed filmmaker, so as you might predict, talent and cohesion are sacrificed in the name of purely irresponsible subhuman entertainment. This deservedly seldom-seen moralitywhupper is guaranteed to offend and confuse anybody with an IQ over 1. If you dont feel nauseous while viewing this movie, drive yourself directly to prison after the screening. (Zack Carlson)

Terror Tuesday continues its ongoing educational series on The Evils of Reproduction with this monumentally offensive assault against pre-adolescence. A schoolbus full of singing children (booo) travels through a cloud of toxic nuclear gas (yaaay) but the kids survive (BOOO). Fortunately, their radioactive vaporbath has transformed them into wee annihilation machines who microwave their victims by giving them adorable hugs. After several local residents meet their crispy demises, its learned that the rampaging nippers can only be stopped if you cut off both of their hands. This discovery leads to a rich array of satisfying child mutilation scenes. Sure, it doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but if I have the opportunity to watch a toddler get dismembered, Im not asking any questions. (Zack Carlson)

Some people will tell you that certain low-budget 1980s horror movies are fun to watch. Theyll say, Have you seen THE WRAITH or RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD? Theyre fun on wheels! Well, guess what? Those people are major buttholes who dont know what theyre talking about. That, or theyve never seen NIGHT OF THE CREEPS. This movie is why fun was invented. In 1959, aliens send an experiment to earth that unleashes slimy slugs into peoples mouths. At the same time, a mental patient is going nutzo with an axe. Cut to: cryogenics. Cut to: 1986. Chris (Rusty from EUROPEAN VACATION!) and J.C. (he uses crutches for no apparent reason!) find themselves besieged with zombies, alien slugs, and a battle for love against a frat guy named Bradster. Filled with tongue-in-cheek homages, squirm-inducing gore, and thousands of insane ideas that always work, this is non-stop energy and non-stop satisfaction. Also, the Raymond-Chandler-obsessed detective hero is played by Tom Atkins (LETHAL WEAPON, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK), who is also known as The Best Guy Ever. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

Ultra obscure! Ultra bananas! Never on DVD. Filmed in Charlotte, North Carolina by one-time director/writer/producer/editor/stunt coordinator/casting director (sonuvabitch!) Dave A. Adams, ANOTHER SON OF SAM could be called a protoslasher. I prefer to call it a rite of passage. This dirt-cheap true crime rip-off has no connection to Son Of Sam, let alone another Son of Sam. So whats it all about? I have no idea. But it has something to do with an escaped mental patient named Harvey, some sweet speedboat jumps, SWAT troopers, and a lounge singer named Johnny Charro. Plus, an abortion! However, this movie isnt really about the final outcome. Its about the JOURNEY. This is 74 minutes of mid-sentence freeze frames, drunken camera tricks, big fat synths, bloody deaths, and slow motion chases, all conspiring to build a ridiculous facsimile of an actual film. Dave A. Adams never made another movie, but he clearly never watched one before making ANOTHER SON OF SAM. Id call it even. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

In the late 1980s, someone made the decision to reboot the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE franchise. Apparently, the general public was unhappy with the tonguein-cheek direction of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE PART 2. I had no problem when Leatherface dry-humped his girlfriend with a chainsaw in that movie. But whatever. The point is, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III was an attempt to get back to the gritty roots of the original 1974 film. In order to achieve this, Leatherface was given a Speak N Spell. Thats my recommendation. If you need more, take note that a pre-LORD OF THE RINGS Viggo Mortensen appears as Leatherfaces brother. And yes, this is the TEXAS CHAINSAW movie with the teaser trailer that spoofed EXCALIBUR and assured the world that, THE SAW IS FAMILY. REV IT UP. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Sam Raimi must be the happiest man on earth. Not content with creating one of the most ferocious and groundbreaking lo-fi horror movies ever, Raimi one-upped himself by reimagining the original EVIL DEAD as a parody. And also a sequel. Most civilians would fail to see the point in such an undertaking. Thankfully, were not most civilians. The gonzo, ultra-creative EVIL DEAD II reunites the iconic Ash (Bruce Campbell) with a possessed cabin in the woods. But this time, Raimi and co-writer Scott Spiegel werent happy with simply fashioning chainsaws as hands, decapitating demons, and filling up rooms with blood. They wanted more! And so, the spirit of the original EVIL DEAD was combined with The Three Stooges to create the definitive horrorcomedy of 1987 and also all years forever after infinity. If you see a movie in 2013 with the name Raimi on it, do the right thing. Make sure its this one. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

So, just as these brave pioneers have done so many times before, the cheap cigar brigade of unscrupulous exploitation film producers went to work, turning out imitation Bruce Lees by the dozen: Bruce Li, Bruce Le, Dragon Lee, Bronson Lee, and more. There are so many Lee-alike movies that they form a genre in themselves. And no Brucesploitation movie is weirder than this one. Heres the premise - seriously: Bruce Lee dies and goes to the underworld where he teams up with Dracula, The Godfather, The Exorcist, Clint Eastwood, James Bond, Emmanuelle, Popeye, and many others in an attempt to defeat the Lord Of Darkness. Its cheap, fast-moving, incredibly confusing, and hilarious. It will also reveal the very meaning of life, if youre interested in that kind of thing. (Lars)

Please note: due to SXSW, this film will be screened at our Village location. Man-pulp with the macho pedal strapped to the floor! With the coming of the 80s, the national testosterone level was at an all-time low. It was time for action! So a crack team of aging tough guys was assembled to make this mercenary mission movie. Unlike most male stars in the 80s, craggy hardcases Stuart Whitman, Robert Vaughn and Woody Strode were definitely NOT in touch with their emotions, unless face-punching is an emotion. Whitman, who lets his eyebrows do most of the talking, plays Captain Tony, one of those lovable mean Irish bastards who has a kick-ass boat, knows everybody in town and drinks a gallon of whiskey at breakfast. He and shady government operative Robert Vaughn get tricked into a doomed Fidel Castro assassination plot by turtle-loving mob guy Michael Gazzo (with his rasping voice), whose main enforcer is busty amazon Sybil Danning! With cockfights, big explosions and stock-footage shark attacks! Also known as MEAN DIRTY TONY. (Lars)
BUTTERFLIES Dir. Joseph Sarno, 1975, R, 93 min, 35mm RZ 3/20

One-of-a-kind writer/director Joe Sarno always maintained that the brain is our primary erogenous zone and while his erotically charged films are full of the usual quotient of sex and nudity it is the carefully constructed plots and situations that grab the audience, not the eye candy. Sometimes called the Ingmar Bergman of sex films, Sarno devotes far more time to establishing the interrelationships of his characters than any other erotic film makers, most of whom were content to hurl boobs at the audience with little or no context. As a result of Sarnos care and love, these films still hold a lot of interest today, while the indiscriminate boob parades provoke only yawns. BUTTERFLIES is the story of a farm girl who strikes out for the city only to find that the lights and glamour arent all they seem. Its one of the standard adult-movie plot lines, but Sarno works his magic as always, endowing the story with complexity and richness, and of course lots and lots of sex and nudity. (Lars)

This is a really funny hybrid of mad science and women-in-prison movies. You will laugh a lot as you watch the screens preeminent bubbly blonde airhead Judy Landers, in a really demanding role that would probably give Meryl Streep nightmares, as a woman with amnesia mistakenly confined to a mental institution. There she is pursued by an evil murderer as she tries to avoid the human experimentation lab of Dr. Fletcher (the great Mary Woronov). If it were a wellmade, well-executed movie, it would probably be terrifying, but thankfully its not. Get ready to laugh a whole lot and then laugh some more for dessert. With Marjoe Gortner, Robert ZDar and a bunch of pretty ladies who dont want to wear clothes and dont have to. (Lars)
UP YOUR TEDDY BEAR Dir. Don Joslyn, 1970, R, 89 min, 35mm RZ 4/3
You want weird? Try this one on for size, tough guy. Wally Cox, who provided Underdogs voice in the 60s cartoon series, stars as a mild mannered clerk who has a genius for making toys. Julie Catwoman Newmar plays Mother, the head of a huge toy conglomerate, who wants to hire Wally. He refuses because the slinky Miss Newmar reminds him so much of his own mother (no wonder hes got problems). So she orders her assistant Skippy, played by 350-pound Victor Buono, to break down his resistance by providing him with an endless succession of prostitutes. That would be enough but the movie throws in at no extra charge Wallys kinky infantile dream sequences featuring Newmar as his mother. And (Oh no!) elephantine Victor Buono in drag. Some comedies just push everything too far - this is definitely one of those movies. Its full of big, cartoon-influenced, surreal comedy sequences that sometimes work and sometimes fall flat. But its always manic, interesting, and so, so strange. (Lars)

Picture yourself on a state highway in the rural south in 1974. In the distance an apparition flickers on a drive-in screen. Its a beautiful woman with long red hair and skin the color of mothers milk. She lifts a 12-gauge to eye level and squeezes the trigger. Its not a hallucination. Its Claudia Jennings, a common sight on drive-in screens throughout the country in the 70s and that rarest of things, a genuine female action star. The movie is GATOR BAIT, a big hit that kept drive-in audiences coming back again and again. Like most movies that made it big on the pickup-truck circuit, GATOR BAIT really delivers. The story of a sexy swamp rat named Desiree whos half woman and half savage, it features the scariest inbred hillbillies outside of the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and a revenge plot that builds to a thundering, foot-stomping climax. As an actress Claudia Jennings doesnt have a great deal of range, but then neither does a sawed-off shotgun. Under the right circumstances both can be devastating. (Lars)
SURF II: THE END OF THE TRILOGY Dir. Randall Badat, 1984, R, 91 min, 35mm RZ 4/17
Dont look for SURF I, because no such movie exists. In fact, there has never been another movie even remotely like SURF II. From the outside it looks a lot like a typical teens just wanna have fun comedy, but in reality, its the single most anarchic comedy of the decade, spring-loaded with non sequiturs, cultural satire, truly great comedic performances, and fun, fun, fun. When a pair of bad dads decide their beach neighborhood is overdue for gentrification, they enlist evil nerd scientist Eddie Deezen to create a cola formula that will turn all surfers into brain dead automatons. Some of the surfers have other ideas, and so does director Randall Badat, who turns every scene into an off-kilter masterpiece of energy, invention, and (yep) pure cinema. This has never been released on DVD because the world is doomed. (Lars)

In the past these have included bizarre Chinese kids movies, punishingly terrible teen comedies, and truly unforgettable rarely screened classics. As much as wed like to tell you what the mystery title is this month, we cant. I mean we could put in a request but there would be an application fee, and we couldnt even guarantee that wed have that information in time unless the expediting charge was added to that. So, it will just have to be a surprise unless, hey, is that a Rolex? Weve always wanted one of those. Can I try it on? So anyway, its a pretty closely guarded secret. (Lars)

If I had been alive in 1985, Michael Ciminos YEAR OF THE DRAGON would have doubtlessly been my choice for the best picture of that year. Why? Because despite all the criticism and backlash that this film received about it being variously racist and sexist, its subject matter is actually about the distinctly American compulsion to place the blame on cultural others that if as a society we dont instinctively understand something deemed foreign, it must be somehow bad or wrong. It is a sincere and measured critique of the behavior for which it was lambasted in the press. Such is YEAR OF THE DRAGONs painful historic irony. Dont be fooled by its reputation: YEAR OF THE DRAGON is not simply a great film, but one of the greatest a film that examines a sickness that to this day plagues America. Michael Cimino, Mickey Rourke, and John Lone together create a portrait of New York City whose post-war wounds yet remain unhealed, where Chinese triad members fill the streets with drugs and violence, and only one cop seeks to effect positive change. As film critic F.X. Feeney wrote for Z Magazine in 1987: To go the distance with this movie is to be put in touch with reservoirs of feeling that defy easy analysis but define America in all its democratic genius and vicious, illustrious, fractious, imperial reality. Hes there to cover the story of her tour and, when he finally realizes her identity, uses his luck to snag an exclusive interview. Of course, when love and Rome are involved, things dont always go according to plan. Star Audrey Hepburns legendary performance as secluded, sheltered Princess Ann secured her a place among the pantheon of silver screen icons. Her co-star Gregory Peck aint too shabby either as the newsman who wins her heart. Even decades after its release few screen romances are filled with this much freewheeling fun. Sam Peckinpah was cinemas poet laureate of alienated men on the edge, and BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA is his masterpiece. Bennie (Warren Oates) is a broken down drunk American living in Mexico, the kind of guy who tries to kill his crabs with tequila. When he hears a local crime lord has offered one million dollars for the head of Alfredo Garcia - a guy Bennie knows is already dead and buried - Bennie sees a way to make something of his life. Oates based Bennies look and character on Peckinpah himself, who had collapsed into a dissolute mess in the late stages of his career. Were proud to have this as the first screening of the Badass Digest Presents series. Not only is star Warren Oates the inaugural member of the Badass Hall of Fame, this movie represents the sort of uncompromising, vicious filmmaking we love. A critically lambasted flop at the time, BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA can now be seen as a brutal, honest, ugly, and gloriously violent summation of the dark impulses that drove Sam Peckinpah to greatness and self-destruction. The hackneyed plot kicks off with Det. Somerset (Morgan Freeman) just one week out from retirement in the homicide department. All that stands between him and some shuffleboard is one final casea case that teams him up with a you. From here the movie takes cruel turn after malicious corkscrew turn and leaves you questioning the anger and resentment that festers inside of all of us until it crescendos into an unconventional ending straight out of your best anti-hero movie of the 70s. No one says Im too old for this shit! and no one pulls any punches. David Fincher is a genius of atmosphere and SE7EN could be his greatest outing. The stakes are always high, and you perpetually feel at risk watching this grimy crime shocker. This film doesnt just mark the best of the 90s; it ranks amongst the greatest in the genre. And if David Fincher, Howard Shore, Brad Pitt, AND THE VOICE OF GOD cant get you into a theater to watch it this March...you could be the greatest sinner of them all. *Also before the show we will be having a gluttonous spaghetti eating competition. The American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) is an Austin-based repository that houses many film prints from the classic drive-in and exploitation era. In fact, it houses so many film prints, in so many different states of completeness and under so many different titles that new complete prints are uncovered all the time. Temple Of Schlock is a website edited by Chris Poggiali on which he celebrates and posts new research about just these kinds of titles. One popular feature on the site is The Endangered List, which catalogues films thought lost at one time or another. Now AGFA and Temple Of Schlock are teaming up to present four films, previously considered lost, now rediscovered in the AGFA vaults. Because these are all titles that played on the all-night grindhouse screens, it is only appropriate that the show will be an all-nighter. Expect lots of sex and violence with a chaser of more sex and violence. See you there! (Lars)

The balletic violence and weary fatalism that Peckinpah brings to his vision of the American West is underscored by some of sweatiest, dirtiest, bloodiest performances from some of the the toughest, ugliest actors of all time. Ernest Borgnine, Ben Johnson, and Warren Oates shoot, screw, drink, and ride horses all while imbuing the films harsh, empty world with a sense of real poetry. This is a film about the mantle of violence passing from old professionals, who live by a code, to even more chaotic and deadly future generations. And what is the code these old men live by? Charles Grodin has embezzled $15 million dollars from mob boss Dennis Farina, and its up to bounty hunter Robert DeNiro to get him to L.A. before Grodins bond defaults. The FBI wants Grodin to testify, the mob wants him dead, and DeNiro just wants his cash. This movie may just sound like an ODD COUPLE on the run, and, while it kind of is...its also awesome. A post-UNTOUCHABLES DeNiro wanted to take a stab at comedy, and, after being turned down for the main role in BIG, settled on this. While the studio originally wanted Cher or Robin Williams to star opposite DeNiro, director Martin I made BEVERLY HILLS COP Brest told the studio to go screw itself and took his project and incredible cast of characters actors elsewhere along with his co-star of choice, Mr. Charles Grodin. This film is a goldmine of comic genius and white-knuckled action as we bask in the glory of a fed-up wiseguy (DeNiro) and a whiny, weasely, sarcastic Grodin stumbling their way across the country. The plot is maybe a bit overly complicated but the chemistry on screen is worth the inclusion of every last double cross. You WILL forge a most unlikely friendship with this movie . Youre OK, Jack. GANJA AND HESS regrettably bombed at the box office and was thereafter scooped up by various unsavory distributors who then respectively re-released it under different titles (BLOOD COUPLE and VAMPIRES OF HARLEM, for example). Sam Neill and especially Isabelle Adjani leave it all on the set, reaching deep into themselves to lift the material to even greater heights. This is not like any other movie youve ever seen before. When notoriously slow peach-eater, Castor Troy (Nic Cage), ends up in a coma, and the only person who knows the location of a bomb that is set to destroy the City of Angels is Castors brother, Eagle Scout Sean (Travolta) is forced to undergo an emergency experimental surgery that will put his greatest enemys face...on himself. Bullets whiz and doves fly. John Travolta gets to act like Nicholas Cage, and Nicolas Cage gets to act like a TOTAL FUCKING MANIAC in an action movie that has no words to describe its brilliant insanity. Watching 90s John Woo in high gear is like watching Michael Bay have a three-way with the CRANK movies while the Devil himself watches. It is top-notch action and spectacularly entertaining with totally overthe-top performances. Big Screen Classics: THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN Dir. Terry Gilliam, 1988, PG, 126 min RZ 4/8 & 4/9
A true story. Weve got the film to prove it. Its no secret that Terry Gilliam and movie studios dont get along, but no Gilliam movie has more misconceptions about it than THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN. Gilliam was caught up in a studio shuffle that saw one head leaving and a new regime taking over. When MUNCHAUSEN finally wrapped, the new powers-that-be simply dumped this film out with so few prints that it was destined to be a financial flop. As a result, public perception was that this was a terrible movie, when, in reality, its a multi-Oscar nominated film that was released to reviews that didnt match its financial failure. Amid a war-torn city being invaded by the Turks, a theatrical production of Baron Munchausen is soon interrupted the REAL Baron Munchausen, who recounts the tale of what really happened. What follows is a revisionist view of the enchanting adventures of Baron von Munchausen on his journey to save a town from defeat. Being swallowed by a giant sea-monster, falling through the center of the Earth, a trip to the moon, a dance with Venus, and an escape from the Grim Reaper are all just a few events of his spectacular life. This movie pushed the visual effects envelope in 1988 and blows away anything youll see even today. Gilliams use of practical effects will make you believe a horse can still run in two halves, John Neville can fly if he holds onto a cannonball tightly enough, and Robin Williams can dislocate his head at the neck. This film was over budget, over-indulged, completely remarkable, unbelievable, impossible...and true. (Greg MacLennan)

For the very first time, the Dickens classic GREAT EXPECTATIONS will be staged in Londons West End, and audiences around the world will be able to share the historic opening night experience at their local theater. Although GREAT EXPECTATIONS has been adapted for film on two separate occasions, once by David Lean in 1946 and most recently by Mike Newell, it has never been produced for The West End or Broadway, widely believed to be too difficult to translate to stage. However, this Jo Clifford adaptation has been universally acclaimed as a triumph on its sellout tour of the UK head of its West End debut. The event will form part of the global celebrations surrounding the 200th Anniversary of the Dickens birth.

Russellmania was a blissful day at the Alamo Drafthouse. We got to celebrate many things Kurt Russell, from features to trailers, and no trailer seemed to resonate with people quite like USED CARS. This early collaboration between writer Bob Gale and writer/director Robert Zemeckis (who went on to make the BACK TO THE FUTURE movies together) features one of the truly great and defining performances from perfect human, Kurt Russell. We had a SOPHIES CHOICE in selecting that Kurt Russell marathon line up, but whos to say Sophie wouldnt have cheated and chosen them both if she could have. And so our Kurt Russell love will prosper as we see him as the slimy, lying, roguish and impeccably dressed salesman on a used car lot. There, he has to hide the fact that his boss (the incredible Jack Warden) has died from the evil and conniving brother of his boss (also Jack Warden in an amazing double performance) who is trying to steal the lot for himself. Overloaded with true comedic power and fantastically risky onetake stunts and set pieces, USED CARS is a wild tribute to the qualities that define America: corruption, deceit and dishonesty. Its also the only R-rated movie from the family-friendly Zemeckis, so dont miss out on Kurt Russell doing lots of choice swears. USED CARS will annihilate you. (Tommy Swenson & Greg MacLennan)

Under normal circumstances, I consider myself grateful to my father for allowing me to watch any film that I expressed interest in, MPAA rating be damned, from the time I was 5 years old onward. THE SHINING, however, is the single exception. I do not exactly recall how young I was when I first saw this film, but I do know that I have been unrelentingly terrified of it and of one horrible sequence in particular ever since first seeing it. THE SHINING presents a kind of absolute horror that grows subtly from within, an intangible and curiously evasive type of terror that is there one second and all but disappears the next. On the occasion of Nicholsons birthday (April 22nd) and the release of Rodney Aschers ROOM 237, a documentary that explores the hidden meanings in THE SHINING, we present a special engagement of this classic by Kubrick, a master craftsman. A wandering ronin named Sanjuro (Toshiro Mifune) stumbles upon a rural 19th Century Japanese town split down the middle by two rival gangs. Having no clear allegiance to either side, he decides to play each against the other in an attempt to lead both towards extinction. What follows is an ultra-tense cinematic showdown at high noon between cat and mouse. Unfortunately, Sanjuros carefully laid plan begins to unravel when the son of one gangster arrives in town: the wily, ruthless, and uncouth Unosuke (Tatsuya Nakadai), who boasts not only blade, but also revolver. When the game changes, Sanjuro finds himself in a fight for his life and the lives of the innocent citizens caught in the middle. Unquestionably Japans biggest stars of the period, Mifune and Nakadai appear together here onscreen for the first time ever this was, and honestly still is, the biggest of big deals. Aside from THE SEVEN SAMURAI (1954), YOJIMBO is Kurosawas best and most celebrated work. To see it on 35mm is to be in awe of a master and his actors who were, are, and always will be towering giants. (Sam Prime)

People come and go. Nothing ever happens. In this edition of Cinema Club, Dr. Thomas Schatz, author of multiple, renowned books on the Hollywood studio system and UT professor, joins us for a screening of GRAND HOTEL. In the canon of Hollywood classics GRAND HOTEL has been lost in the shuffle. This 1932 masterpiece from hard working industry professionals Edmund Goulding and Irving Thalberg still stands as one of the very best movies the Hollywood studio system ever made. The film follows a handful of residents in a posh Berlin hotel. And the lineup of characters is a dandy: they include a sly German jewel thief, an American accountant living it up after a fatal diagnosis, a Russian ballerina on the verge of a nervous breakdown, an industrialist and his stenographer. This setup allows the film to effortlessly explore themes of entitlement, class structure and celebrity, all of which were extremely relevant in Hollywood in the years following the Great Depression. And no less than Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford and John Barrymore highlight the films whos-who cast of Hollywood legends. How GRAND HOTEL, a sweeping spectacle and intimate character study of the absolute highest order, has not become a popular staple of the grand days of Hollywood is a shame. For the past thirty years, Michael Ciminos HEAVENS GATE has been haunted by the history of its initial release in New York City and the undue savaging it received from the influential critics of the time. Hot off the 5 Oscars that came with THE DEER HUNTER in 1978, audiences and critics alike expected great things from Cimino, but were apparently not ready for what he had in mind for his next project. A $44 million dollar prestige picture, the most highly anticipated film the year if not the decade, HEAVENS GATE opened to poor reviews and audiences unwilling to brave its nearly 4-hour running time. HEAVENS GATE failed to gross back even 10% of its investment. The uncut version of the film never opened anywhere else but the New York City circuit. It later played Los Angeles theaters in a reworked, truncated version (more than an hour shorter than the original) but still failed to garner the support necessary to recoup the money that went into making it. As a result, HEAVENS GATE infamously triggered the collapse of the studio that had so confidently backed it: United Artists. It sank a studio, to be sure, and has carried this spectre with it ever since. Now, in 2013, perhaps enough time has passed for HEAVENS GATE to step out from the shadow of its notorious history and be considered on its own merits. Thanks to a new DCP restoration supervised by Cimino himself, we have the luxury to reevaluate this historical epic about the Johnson County Wars of the 1890s, to revisit a narrative about the American Dream decades after it was spurned and dismissed by the few who saw it. Two words: Mr. Darcy. Seriously, this description should just end there because WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED? What more does ANY woman need than the brooding, handsome, totally swoon-worthy Mr. Darcy? Ok, well, Pemberly doesnt hurt. Nor do all of the fancy balls and gorgeous dresses and romantic intrigue and GAH I want to hate Elizabeth Bennet for being such a lucky bitch but I cant. Shes too awesome. Now, you may be one of those Austen purists who will only watch the BBC version with Colin Firth (which is, admittedly, a masterpiece). If so, I feel the need to point out that hello, did you miss the POINT of the story? Its not good to be prideful OR prejudiced! Give this 2005 version a chance, and within minutes youll be enchanted by the new interpretation of the characters (although Keira is still way too skinny) and even the non-Colin Firth Mr. Darcy (not, it turns out, an oxymoron!). Oh you guys, Im getting so excited just writing about it! Like when they almost kiss in the rain and when Judi Dench shows up and Lizzy realizes she still has a chance and OMG! (In fact, Im still hoping this might happen, although cleaning isnt nearly as fun as orphans make it look.) ANNIE continues to shine like the top of the Chrysler building as a musical classic, and were giving a whole new generation the chance to fall in love with that spunky redhead (played by the irresistible Aileen Quinn) and her trusty dog, Sandy. From the deliciously awful Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett) to the taciturn and towering Punjab (Geoffrey Holder), this film is studded with stellar performances and show-stopping numbers. In college, I listened to the JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS soundtrack so much, I forgot they werent a real band. And yes, I do know all of the words to Du Jours Backdoor Lover. (Comin from behind with the lights down low!) In my opinion, this sassy gem of a film is insanely underrated, and Im not just saying that because Ive been brainwashed by Mega Records. (Gatorade is the new Snapple!) The script pops with humor, the songs actually rock, and the roster of actors is almost too good be true. Rachel Leigh Cook is adorable as Josie, but its Alan Cumming and Parker Posey who steal the show as unhinged record producers Wyatt and Fiona. I would die to crash their slumber party, but instead, Ill settle for celebrating my favorite fictional band at this special Girlie Night edition of Music Monday, where you are definitely encouraged to sing along. (Dont pretend like you havent memorized all of the lyrics.) Grab your best pair of cat ears, slip on your Du Jour t-shirt and prepare for a totally jerkin night. (Sarah Pitre)

Afternoon Tea is always a classy affair, but in March, were getting especially highbrow with the Merchant-Ivory adaptation of E.M. Forsters literary masterpiece, A ROOM WITH A VIEW. Set at the turn of the twentieth century, this magnificent film focuses on Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter), a young Englishwoman on a tour of Italy under the watchful eye of her chaperone, Charlotte Bartlett (played by our beloved Maggie Smith). When she meets the dashing and free-spirited George Emerson (Julian Sands), Lucy slowly begins to break free from social conventions and learns to exert her own independence. Also featuring Daniel Day-Lewis and Judi Dench, this Academy Award winner for Best Adapted Screenplay will dazzle you with glorious cinematography, splendid costumes and a coming-of-age story that never fails to resonate. A typical Dionysium show will feature a lecture, a declamation, a drinking song, a film or live musical performance, an appeal to Dionysus, a fiction-writing contest, and plenty of strong drink. But the heart of every Dionysium is the debate, pitting two experts against each other in toe-to-toe parliamentary combat. Dionysium debate resolutions have covered everything from Social Security reform to the future threat of genocidal robots.

One day he offers to help Standard, the father of a new family that moved into his building. Standards in debt with mobsters and needs to rob a pawn shop to make up the debt and needs a skilled getaway driver. When the mob tries to conspire against the two during the job the driver makes it his mission to protect Standards wife (Carey Mulligan) and seek vengeance on anyone involved with killing Standard. Winding Refn infuses his film with so much energy, from the films jaw-dropping opening action sequence to the beautiful cinematography to 80s-inspired score and soundtrack, that you may literally find yourself forgetting to breathe as you try to hang on for ride. And speaking of the score, well have the films composer Cliff Martinez live for a special Q&A following the film!

Much-loved author and illustrator Dr. Seuss, the creator and co-writer of THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T, reportedly called this wildly original movie-musical a debaculous fiasco upon its initial theatrical release because audiences apparently were not yet ready for a film as purely imaginative as this. Since then, it has developed a cult appreciation among audiences both young and old for its appropriately dreamlike realization of the sheer wonder within Seuss narrative world. Young Bart Collins (Tommy Rettig) dozes off while practicing his dreaded piano lessons and finds himself deep in slumberland wherein elements of his day-to-day life take on a fantastic character. His piano teacher, Dr. Terwilliker, manifests as an evil genius who needs 500 piano students (5,000 fingers!) to operate his giant piano 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and who on top of all of that intends to take Barts mom for his wife. Only with the help of plumber August Zabladowski can Bart save his mom and the other 499 students of the Terwilliker Institute from a life of imprisonment at the pianos pearly white keys! (Sam Prime)

AFS Essential Cinema: Children of Abraham/Ibrahim 7: Films of the Middle East and Beyond
In the past year, the Middle East and North Africa have continued being hotspots of political activity and social unrest. Some hopes of the Arab Spring seem to have faltered, while Syria has descended into a winter of despair and Iran continues its repressive measures. Our series of films from these regions will continue looking at the lives of ordinary people as depicted by filmmakers native to or familiar with the region. As always, we will see a wide array of subjects beautifully or powerfully handled by expert filmmakers. Beginning the series is the awardwinning film about a day in the life of silenced Iranian film director Jafar Panahi. Then comes a wonderful film about a suicide bomber deterred from his mission by love. Following that is a surprise feminist film from Egypt. An Israeli film by the director of THE BANDS VISIT (shown by AFS in an earlier version of this series) will focus on a young boys disintegrating family. We plan to have a Q&A with one of the principal actors, Alon Pdut. We will also show a star-crossed lovers film from the Palestinian Territories. Then comes a charming Turkish feature about a man who dreams of going places during his daily grind in a highway toll booth. Ending the series will be a sweeping Turkish epic about the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman imperial army and navy in 1453. Chale Nafus, Director of Programming, Austin Film Society

This insightful character study of an extended family was a TV movie directed by Eran Kolirin, who a few years later would make the much loved THE BANDS VISIT. Here, in THE LONG JOURNEY he was focused on a young boy obsessed with basketball and with dreams of meeting a famous Israeli player at a practice game his father has promised to take him to. But the father has too many problems -separation from his wife, gambling debts, and a crumby sales job representing house trinkets no one wants. The boys mother is trying to date men she meets over the internet, but they are all jerks of one sort or another. Her parents have their own issues, especially her father who is obsessed with a neighbor who seems to always get his way, even with an unjustified Handicapped parking sign. The film takes place in less than 24 hours, but during the scenes from that day and night we learn a lot about some everyday people just trying to get by in modern-day Israel. The actor Alon Pdut now lives in Austin and will be on hand for a Q&A following the film. You can see his most recent performance in OUT IN THE DARK, an Israeli film well received at Toronto in 2012.
