SPRING BREAKERS

ABCS OF DEATH Dir. Various, 2013, NR, 123 min 3/22 STOKER Dir. Chan-wook Park, 2013, R, 98 min Opens 3/15
Chan-wook Park has slowly become one of the most interesting voices in international cinema, with his most notable efforts being The Vengeance Trilogy, which included the instant classic OLDBOY, and IM A CYBORG, BUT THATS OK. Now he takes his vision to America with his English language debut, STOKER. The result is an atmospheric psychological thriller that starts when a mother and daughter, India, played by Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowsa, grieve over the loss of the familys patriarch. Soon Indias strange uncle (Matthew Goode) suspiciously comes to move in. The two question his motives and soon the three are together, but tension and unease take over in Chan-wooks intriguing mystery. Twenty-six directors. Twenty-six ways to die. The ABCs OF DEATH is perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning fifteen countries and featuring segments directed by over two dozen of the worlds leading talents in contemporary genre film. Inspired by childrens educational books, the motion picture is comprised of twenty-six individual chapters, each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given free rein in choosing a word to create a story involving death. Provocative, shocking, funny and ultimately confrontational, THE ABCs OF DEATH is the definitive vision of modern horror diversity. Drafthouse Films, Magnet Pictures and Timpson Films are proud to present this alphabetical arsenal of destruction orchestrated by what Fangoria calls a stunning roll call of some of the most exciting names in horror across the world.

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Dir. Sam Raimi, 2013, PG Opens 3/8
Excitement for OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL has grown large since the first images were released for Sam Raimis imaginative prequel to the seminal 1939 classic THE WIZARD OF OZ. The movie stars James Franco as Oscar, a Kansas con artist thrust into the magical land of Oz. There he must fight and outwit the likes of the evil sorceress, not just a sucker on the road, to survive. There were skeptics, but the movie looks and feels like it wholeheartedly belongs in the cinematic realm of the original OZ, which isnt an easy accomplishment. Also starring Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams as Glinda, OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL looks to be a feast for the eyes.

THE CROODS Dir. Kirk De Micco, 2013, PG Opens 3/22

The voice talents of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener and Cloris Leachman lend themselves to this prehistoric story of a family who are forced to flee their cave after an earthquake destroys their home. After it strikes they face the open road where every turn yields new dangers. Fortunately another wandering Caveman offers to help them reach safety in a distant land. While the disaster continues to change the world around them the family must stick together to survive. Filled with eye-popping animation and wit THE CROODS is a fresh and funny ride through the stone age.

NEW RELEASES
SPRING BREAKERS Dir. Harmony Korine, 2013, R, 92 min Opens 3/29
Theres not much you can say about SPRING BREAKERS that will make any logical sense. Its written and directed by Harmony Korine (GUMMO, MISTER LONELY) whose films shed a rare light on Americas dysfunctional, nihilistic and sociopathic population. His films are hard to digest and even harder to ignore. Korines latest, SPRING BREAKERS, feels decidedly different than anything the filmmaker has ever done. It follows four college girls who want to get away from their empty dorm during spring break. Problem is they have no money. After robbing a restaurant the girls go off to hit the beach and live the spring break of their dreams. There the cops bust them, but luckily a local gangster, Alien (James Franco) is there to bail em out and make the girls part of his entourage. Korine uses the colorful backdrop of spring break to juxtapose the ugliness lying underneath it all. SPRING BREAKERS is crazy, original, toxic, and mind blowing. (R.J. LaForce)

ADMISSION Dir. Paul Weitz, 2013, PG-13 Opens 3/22

Tina Fey and Paul Rudd star in this intelligent, quirky comedy. Portia (Fey) is an uptight Princeton admissions officer who spends her day recruiting students for the prestigious university. One day she receives an unexpected call from a college classmate (Rudd) who wants her to recruit one of his students. He runs an alternative high school and it turns out he believes that his impressive student might be Portias son that she gave up for adoption. Soon Portia decides to find out and get close to him, even it means putting her career on the line by altering his transcript.

WRONG Dir. Quentin Dupieux, 2013, R, 94 min Opens 3/29

Dolph Springer (RENO 911s Jack Plotnick) awakens one morning to find he has lost the sole love of his life his dog, Paul. Desperate to reunite with his best friend and to set things right, Dolph embarks on a journey which spirals into the realm of the absurd. On his quest, he drastically alters the lives of several severely bizarro characters, including a promiscuous pizza delivery girl (ENTOURAGEs Alexis Dziena), a mentally unstable, jogging-addicted neighbor, an opportunistic French-Mexican gardener, an eccentric pet detective (Steve Little of HBOs EASTBOUND AND DOWN) and most mysterious of all, an enigmatic pony-tailed guru, Master Chang (William Fichtner) who imparts his teachings to Dolph on how to metaphysically reconnect with his pet. From fearless cinematic surrealist Quentin Dupieux, the director behind the head-exploding Rubber, WRONG is an entrancing and wholly original hallucinatory universe all its own, which TwitchFilm calls a wild and hilarious ride of absurdity!

JURASSIC PARK 3D Dir. Steven Spielberg, 2013, PG-13, 127 min Opens 4/5
Almost 20 years after it first blew the minds of audiences Steven Spielbergs JURASSIC PARK still remains one of the most awe-inspiring films from the cinematic king of inspiring awe. And now its coming back to the big screen in 3D!! At the time of its release the films groundbreaking effects were the most realistic and amazing moviegoers had ever seen, yet what makes the film still hold up to todays lofty technological standards was the combination of CGI with animatronics. The result is a film that feels nostalgic without looking dated. The story, part sci-fi, part horror, part action, is pure Spielberg. It also has one of the best and most underrated scores the great John Williams ever composed and a cast that features the unlikely combination of Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Samuel L. Jackson and (Sir) Richard Attenborough. So do yourself a favor and see Spielbergs unrivaled dinosaur epic back in the theater and get immersed in this unforgettable adventure all over again.

GRACELAND Dir. Ron Morales, 2012, NR, 84 min Opens 4/26 UPSTREAM COLOR Dir. Shane Carruth, 2013, NR, 96 min
Shane Carruth, the mind behind the hypnotic meditation on technology, PRIMER, is back with another unique tale of the human condition with UPSTREAM COLOR. The film centers on the abduction of a woman (Amy Seimetz). After the kidnapping she realizes she has been brainwashed and soon becomes mysteriously drawn to a mysterious, microscopic presence. Her search for answer leads her to a man (Carruth) who shares her connection to the unknown force. The films enigmatic plot, raw emotion and Carruths one-of-a-kind vision make the film tap into the deepest themes of the heart and mind. In this unpredictable and tightly-paced thriller, family man Marlon Villara longtime chauffeur to corrupt Filipino politician Manuel Changois faced with an unthinkable predicament when he gets ambushed while driving both his bosss twelve year-old girl and his own daughter home from school one afternoon. In the chaos of the kidnapping attempt, things go horribly awry and Marlons daughter is taken and held for ransom instead. Desperate to save his daughter, Marlon must navigate the conflicting motives between the ruthless kidnappers, untrustworthy Chango and determined detectives eager to name him a suspect without letting on the wrong girl was taken hostage. As events progress wildly out of control, Marlon, Chango and their families are forced into a rapid downward spiral of deceit and betrayal that will leave no one innocent.

CLUE Quote-Along

THE BIG LEBOWSKI Quote-Along Dir. Joel Coen, 1998, R, 117 min SR Mondays
Sometimes, theres a man, well, hes the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And thats The Dude. Theres no one quite like him, and were giving you the chance to abide with The Dude (Jeff Bridges) at THE BIG LEBOWSKI Quote-Along. Weve subtitled all of your favorite lines so you can use the preferred nomenclature, and well be handing out inflatable bats so you can show Larry what happens when you f*ck a stranger up the ass. Stand against aggression with The Dude, yell, Over the line! with Walter (John Goodman) and definitely do not f*ck with the Jesus (John Turturro). You can even enjoy The Dudes favorite recreation (no, not weed) with a giant-sized bowling game on stage before the show. But dont worry, you wont be required to roll on Shabbos. We hope all of you Little Lebowski Urban Achievers will come out and enjoy yourselves, so you can die with a smile on your face, without feelin like the good Lord gypped you. (Sarah Pitre)

THE ACTION PACK

DAZED AND CONFUSED Quote-Along Dir. Richard Linklater, 1993, R, 102 min RZ 2/28, 3/7, 3/21 : SR 3/15 & 3/22
When DAZED AND CONFUSED hit the big screen in 1993, it made every living teenager wish they could go back in time to 1976. That was the year when a 14-year-old could buy alcohol without getting carded; when high school seniors could paddle the crap out of freshmen; when people could cruise around town with their trunks full of beer and their brains steeped in pot. If youve ever wanted to discuss George Washingtons alien obsession with Slater (Rory Cochrane) or hit on high school girls with Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey), the Action Pack is finally giving you the chance to party 1976-style with our DAZED AND CONFUSED Quote-Along! Weve subtitled your favorite lines so you can scream at freshmen with Darla (Parker Posey), praise Martha Washington for being such a hip, hip lady and sing along with the classic soundtrack. Freshmen, beware, because well be passing out paddles and other props (but no weed, sorry). This cinematic flashback will be more than just alright-- itll be alright, alright, alright! (Sarah Pitre)

CLUE Quote-Along Dir. Jonathan Lynn, 1985, PG, 94 min RZ 4/4, 4/11, 4/25 : VL 4/9 : LC 4/14 : SR 4/17
Youve done it in the library. Youve done it in the dining room. Youve even done it with a candlestick in the kitchen. Thats right, at one time or another, weve all killed Mr. Body. And for this months quote-along, were celebrating our murderous ways with CLUE, the hilarious film adaptation of the board game. Weve subtitled all of your favorite lines, so you can quip along with Wadsworth (Tim Curry), scream along with Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan), and feel the flames on the side of your face with Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn). We wont be handing out ropes or lead pipes, but we will be giving you props (including CLUE cards, of course) to intensify your evening at Mr. Bodys manor. Quote-alongs are always interactive, but this show takes audience participation to a whole new level. (Although you wont have to move any dead bodies... or will you?!) Whether youve seen this movie a thousand times or never before, its no mystery that youll have a ridiculously fun night. And remember, Communism was just a red herring. (Sarah Pitre)

BOY BAND Sing-Along RZ 4/4, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25

You know them by name. You had (have?) their pictures plastered on your wall. You planned your perfect wedding by writing Mrs. Justin Timberlake all over your Lisa Frank binder. If this describes your childhood (or current adulthood), boy oh boy do we have the show for you! Join us for the Ultimate Boy Band Sing-Along, where you can scream like a maniac without having judgement cast down on you by the cool kids who were like Ugh. Hanson is so over. But you knew better. Those dreamy blonde locks could never be over. Were combining the best of the bad boys, the crazy ones, the sensitive ones, the.. others.. to make one hell of a poppy show. Backstreet, N*Sync, New Kids, Boyz II Men, 98 Degrees, and even those new kids with their wacky hairdos, One Direction. Youll leave this show with the giddy excitement of an eleven-year-old girl. And if you really are an eleven-yearold girl, youll leave the show going Man, adults these days are crazy. xoxo Mrs. Justin Timberlake. (Caitlin Stevens)

Moontower Comedy & Oddity Fest Presents: WAYNES WORLD Quote-along Dir. Penelope Spheeris, 1992, PG-13, 94 min RZ 4/18
When the folks over at the Moontower Comedy & Oddity Fest told us that Dana Carvey was coming into town, we immediately bought him a gun rack to show our devotion. NOT! In celebration of one of our favorite comedians, we couldnt resist putting together a screening of the WAYNES WORLD Quote-Along, complete with Waynes World hats, licorice (to install in your Garthmobile) and little cups for spewing. Weve subtitled all of your favorite lines, so you can asphinctersayswhat with Wayne, get by now with Garth, and rock out to Bohemian Rhapsody. Its party time, excellent, and Crucial Taunt might even show up for a reunion show! (Shyeah, and monkeys might fly outta my butt!). Plus, if you want to truly party on, Moontower badges and tickets are still available at www.moontowercomedyfestival.com/.

FOOD & FILM

SO MUCH MORE THAN DINNER AND A MOVIE.

Cinema Cocktails: MILLERS CROSSING

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Dinner Party Dir. Sam Raimi, 2013, PG SR 3/12 : LC 3/13
Excitement for OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL has grown large since the first images were released for Sam Raimis imaginative prequel to the seminal 1939 classic THE WIZARD OF OZ. The movie, which stars James Franco as Oscar, a Kansas con artist thrust into the magical land of Oz. There he must now fight and outwit the likes of the evil sorceress, not just a sucker on the road, to survive. You know we couldnt just show OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL without doing something a little special. We decided that while your eyes are filled with the magic on the screen we could do the same for your tastebuds as well. So we bring to you the OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Dinner Party!! Enjoy three courses of delicious, specialty-themed food along with the film!

Cinema Cocktails: SWINGERS Dir. Doug Liman, 1996, R, 96 min SR 3/29 & 4/4 : RZ 3/20, 3/21, 4/3
Youre so money, and you dont even know it. While we usually dont get into the 90s with our Cinema Cocktails series (unless of course Michael Caine is involved) theres one film made during this decade that fits so well we had no choice. Back in 1996 SWINGERS was as cool as any movie about desperate, egotistical L.A. bachelors ever. Each night they hit the town or a house party with two things in mind: getting girls and having drinks. Sounds like the life, right? Except that mopey Mike has recently moved to the City of Angels in hopes of getting a job and, more importantly, over his ex-girlfriend. His best friend, Trent tries to get him back in the game one cocktail at a time. Jon Favreaus script deftly observes its flawed characters while remaining consistently, genuinely funny and gives the one of the most honest cinematic depictions of L.A. life. Now you can enjoy this 90s indie classic with custom, hand-crafted cocktails designed by our beverage director Bill Norris!

Cinema Cocktails: MILLERS CROSSING Dir. Joel Coen, 1990, R, 115 min
The Coen Brothers have made some undisputed masterpieces in their time, from RAISING ARIZONA to NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, and when youre this good at making movies people are bound to overlook some of your lesser successes. MILLERS CROSSING blew onto the scene in 1990, despite critical success it was originally a financial letdown before finding its audience on home video. This film features some of the finest acting of its outstanding casts careers, breathtaking cinematography and the sharp, quirky dialogue weve come to expect from a Coen Brothers film. Nominated for ZERO Academy Awards this film still lives on in memory as one of the greatest prohibition gangster flicks of all time. Want to see Albert Finney jump out of a second story window in his pajamas with a tommy gun? Want to see John Turturro deliver one of the most heartbreaking pleads for his life? Want to see an all-out gangster war between Irish and Italian crime families? Tom Regan (Gabriel Byrne), is the right hand man to aging, Irish crime boss Leo (Albert Finney). Leo could be on his way out if Italian boss, Caspar, has anything to say about it. Double-crosses and manipulation are the name of the game in this masterful send up to bullet-riddled gangsters, smoking guns, and femme fatales. If thats not enough well have Alamo Beverage Director, Bill Norris, on hand crafting us some custom cocktails to go with the film.

ARMAGEDDON Dir. Michael Bay, 1998, PG-13, 151 min RZ 2/23, 3/1, 3/2, 3/8, 3/9
This Spring you wont want to miss a thing as Master Pancake nukes ARMAGEDDON (1998). Michael Bays scientifically preposterous space opus features Bruce Willis as the worlds greatest deep-core driller, Harry Stamper, who is recruited to save the earth from a giant asteroid. The film boasts a huge cast of personalities (Owen Wilson, Steve Buscemi, Michael Clarke Duncan), laughable science, and a love scene involving Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck doing foreplay with animal crackers while her real-life dad Steven Tyler belts out a love song on the soundtrack. This February/March come see Master Pancake (John Erler, Joe Parsons) and special guest Charlie Hodge obliterate ARMAGEDDON. (John)

GOLDFINGER Dir. Guy Hamilton, 1964, NR, 110 min RZ 4/12, 4/13, 4/19, 4/20
This April, Master Pancake devalues GOLDFINGER (1964) the movie that made Shaken, not Stirred and Pussy Galore household names. Featuring Sean Connery as James Bond, who must foil a scheme concocted by the absurdly named Auric Goldfinger to depreciate the monetary system of the United States. At Goldfingers side is a cavalcade of preposterous henchmen, including Harold Sakata as Oddjob, whose cutting edge headgear has 007 on the run, and Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore, the most ridiculously named Bond Girl since Mounds OSnatch in Shamrocks are Forever. Join Master Pancake and special guestmocker BUZZ MORAN (from The Intergalactic Nemesis) as we say boo to Bond and Alas, poor Auric. (John)

THE HUNGER GAMES Dir. Gary Ross, 2012, PG-13, 142 min RZ 3/22, 3/23, 3/29, 3/30, 4/5, 4/6
This March, Master Pancake satisfies its appetite for mocking with THE HUNGER GAMES (2012). The Hunger Games is (are?) the story of a dystopian future (is there any other kind?) in which young Katniss Everdeen bravely agrees to represent her hometown in the grueling Hunger Games, a televised fight to the death and thinly veiled allegory for Dancing with the Stars. Feisty heartbreaker Jennifer Lawrence leads a cast that includes Woody Harrelson as a drunk dude, Elizabeth Banks as a lady who wears too much makeup and Lenny Kravitz as somebody other than Lenny Kravitz. Come watch Pancake go to Panem and back to kill a Mockingjay as we rip into new teen classic THE HUNGER GAMES! (John)

CHOOSE YOUR OWN PANCAKE RZ 4/14

Its time again for CHOOSE YOUR OWN PANCAKE where you, the viewer, get to pick a movie for Master Pancake, and then we improvise a mock of it, including the skit! Guest mocker Scott Chester joins John and Joe on mic tonight. Bring the DVD of your choice, well narrow it down to our top favorites, then the audience will vote on which of those they want to see. Be prepared to give a short speech. Previous winners include: LOGANS RUN, LEFT BEHIND, SKYSCRAPER, and SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE! What will the audience choose this time around? CYOP is always a fun night, with lots of audience participation and the thrill of seeing a movie mock created right before your eyes. (John)

TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN - PART 1 Dir. Bill Condon, 2012, PG-13, 117 min RZ 4/26 & 4/27
This April Master Pancake returns to Forks for the FOURTH installment in the TWILIGHT Series: BREAKING DAWN PART 1 (2011), based on the novel by Stephenie Myer, a book so dense with quality that they had to break it into two parts to do it justice. Part 1 finds Edward and Bella honeymooning in Brazil, where the audience will thrill to the gripping lounging around the beach scenes (vampires LOVE the beach) and the enthralling chess-playing scenes (!?). The monotony is briefly suspended for the amazing honeymoon consummation scene, before returning to the unbelievable absurdity of the rest of the movie, most of which concerns Bella conceiving a child and Jacob the werewolf imprinting on it, which is actually worse than it sounds. Come out and watch Master Pancake break wind all over BREAKING DAWN PART 1. (John)

LED ZEPPELIN - THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME

THE WIZ Dir. Sidney Lumet, 1978, G, 134 min RZ 3/4

Sidney Lumet directs this version of the classic story, based on the smash Broadway musical. In it Dorothy is now a shy 24-year-old Harlem kindergarten teacher played by Diana Ross. If that doesnt instantly make you curious enough to catch this insanely bonkers adaptation maybe the rest of the synopsis will: A snowstorm brings her to the mysterious Land of Oz; a sprawling, decaying, nightmarish, and dangerous megalopolis that resembles the physical characteristics of New York City. Co-starring the late King of Pop Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow and Nipsy Russell as the Tin Man, THE WIZ is about as original and crazy as a musical version of THE WIZARD OF OZ can be. FOR MORE MUSIC MONDAY SCREENINGS PLEASE REFER TO GIRLIE NIGHT ON PAGE 35.

THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY Dir. Steve Rash, 1978, PG, 114 min, 35mm RZ 3/31 & 4/1
Its difficult, but wonderful, to remember the time when Gary Busey was best known as the Academy Award-nominated actor who portrayed Buddy Holly in Steve Rashs 1978 biopic. Today, Busey is better known as a blustery, unpredictable fellow who in his day-to-day life resembles his character Dell in D.C. CAB (1983), as if he never dropped the wild energy and persona. Despite an acting career that would later include PIRANHA 3DD, Busey virtually disappears into the role of Buddy Holly in this film and injects life back into the music that the world thought they would never hear again following the tragic plane crash that ended the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper. Presented in a brand new 35mm print courtesy of Sony Pictures Repertory, the Drafthouse is proud to present this very special engagement of Steve Rashs THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY! (Sam Prime)

FROM DUSTY WITH LOVE: A DUSTY SPRINGFIELD BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE Dir. Various, NR, 70 min RZ 4/15
Dusty Springfield, who was born on April 16 1939, had a volatile time on this earth. Her personal life was fraught with difficulty. She fought her manic depression with booze and drugs and had to be hospitalized on several occasions. Her love life was confused and unhappy - she had affairs with men and women alike, but preferred the company of her beloved cats. Professionally, her career had its ups and downs. She quit show business for several years because she couldnt find her passion for performing anymore. When she made her comeback, a lot of her audience didnt come back to her. It sounds like the sad story of so many great artists. But it wasnt all in vain. She was able to communicate a level of emotion in her music that few others could even approach. When this blond Irishwoman sang soul music, she sang it like a woman whose heart had been ripped out, when she sang about love she made you see it the way she did, a beautiful dream forever disappearing over the horizon. This show brings you an assortment of music clips featuring Dusty Springfield at her best - and it goes beyond the hits to show her great versatility and power.

LED ZEPPELIN - THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME Dirs. Joe Massott & Peter Clifton, 1976, PG, 136 min RZ 4/22
This is the Led Zeppelin concert movie that inspired thousands of ill-considered acid trips, both during its initial run and later for years on home video. Conan OBrien even made an episode parodying it. For everyone who loves Led Zeppelin (and there are reportedly some fans scattered here and there) its essential, and its especially essential on the big screen with the sound blasting through huge speakers. Filmed on the Houses Of The Holy tour, so there are no bad songs. Plus there are the bands ludicrous fantasy segments which youll have to see to believe. See it!

PINK FLOYD LIVE AT POMPEII Dir. Adrian Maben, 1972, G, 92 min, 35mm RZ 4/29
Before THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON and before THE WALL, Pink Floyd made this memorable feature concert-film featuring live tracks from numerous albums, played in an abandoned, collapsing amphitheater located in Pompeii. Vibrant live tracks combine with candid black-and-white, behind-the-scenes commentary from the band mates and key collaborators to create a remarkable pre-psychedelic, prog rock period insight into the band as more than their songs and liner notes. The film even features fleeting glimpses of the band at work on their next album of the time, THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, what would be the smash hit, most memorable, and defining work of their careers. Waters, Gilmour, Mason, and Wright cover everything from their unusual inspiration to homemade apple pie. (Sam Prime)

CUJO

MARDI GRAS MASSACRE Dir. Jack Weis, 1978, R, 97 min, 35mm VL 3/12 (Note venue change due to SXSW)
This is the story of a man, his rubbing oils, some prostitutes, and a recurring shot of a heart being ripped out of a chest. With boobs. And disco music. In other words, its the Mardi Gras celebration youve been waiting for! Long considered an homage to H.G. Lewiss BLOOD FEAST, MARDI GRAS MASSACRE is a no-budget 1970s cesspool that oozes with illogical sleaze and technical ineptitude. A psychopathic killer kidnaps hookers from the New Orleans gutters so he can sacrifice them to an Aztec god. Plus, he drives a station wagon. There is also a pimp who plays air-keyboards, a brawl that happens in fake slow motion, and music that would have been rejected for use on an episode of PEOPLES COURT. Obviously, all of this stuff defiles common sense and guarantees your entertainment. Officially deemed a VIDEO NASTY in Britain, this trash-gore obscurity plays out so irrationally that its a wonder how it was ever conceived. Miss this screening and fail at humanity! (Joseph A. Ziemba)

NEON MANIACS Dir. Joseph Mangine, 1986, R, 91 min, 35mm RZ 3/5

A hive of disfigured mutants emerge from beneath the Golden Gate bridge to kill at will. This forgotten film is an incredibly senseless and bizarre excuse for teen slaughter, and thats just fine. No origin or explanation is given for the creatures, each of which is a misshapen variation on a basic theme: theres a hirsute neanderthal, a gruesome surgeon, a lumbering samurai and even a leather daddy biker beast who chain-drags a mohawked teen behind his cycle when the monsters invade a high school dance. The titular maniacs seem to share a common mind and have highlighter-green blood. Shuffling among their ranks is a dwarven cycloptic dinosaur that kills with a metal hook. Aimless, inspired bullshit that was released in the Philippines as EVIL DEAD WARRIORS for absolutely no goddamn reason. PLUS!: Look at the directors last name. How embarrassing. (Zack Carlson)

CUJO Dir. Lewis Teague, 1983, R, 93 min, 35mm RZ 3/19

Do you like watching white people with problems? Do you like seeing slow motion utilized for all the wrong reasons? Do you like watching an incredibly cute Saint Bernard with a huge head terrorize the kid from WHOS THE BOSS? Of course you do. Stephen King felt the same way, because he once referred to this sweat-soaked nail-biter as, A ferocious interpretation of my most accomplished novel, built upon a near-symphonic cornucopia of imminent dread. OK, fine. Stephen King never said that. But Im saying this: CUJO is a fucking awesome movie!!! Starring Dee Wallace (E.T., THE HILLS HAVE EYES), Billy Jacoby (JUST ONE OF THE GUYS), and Danny Pintauro (yes, its Jonathan from WHOS THE BOSS!!!), CUJO is dumb, overblown, terrifying, and filled with a constant sense of doom. And thats not just because of the rabies-infested juggernaut himself. This movie also addresses classic 80s social hang-ups like adultery, spousal abuse, and men in short-shorts playing tennis. You cant go wrong. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

TERROR TUESDAY
CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD aka GATES OF HELL Dir. Lucio Fulci, 1980, R, 93 min, 35mm RZ 3/26
Normally, when a priest hangs himself, its cause for celebration. But in the case of this Italian blood-chiller, said act opens up a gateway to the darkest corners of the Netherworld, unleashing a rabid bounty of demons, zombies, spastic fireballs and even less sensible threats to mankind. The requisite clueless American lead is Christopher George of PIECES, who faces paranormal annihilation with a wink and a grin as everyone around him is torn to quivering chunks. This unrepentant humanity-destroyer is easily the best of the late-70s/early 80s Euro-horror avalanche, cutting through all competition with a thousand vicious, barbaric fists formed of sheer hatred, sweaty perversity and shrieking meat. Up yours, Dario Argento! Here, true Italian terrormaster Lucio Fulci writes and directs the most sanity-free exploration into Hell ever captured on camera, rich with unholy possession, power drill trepanation, brain-mangling squishery, inflatable sex doll sorcery and a truly unforgettable segment in which a teenage girl bleeds from the eyes while vomiting up her entire digestive tract. No rules! (Zack Carlson)

HELL HIGH Dir. Douglas Grossman, 1989, R, 84 min, 35mm RZ 4/2

Almost every single high school horror movie involves a shadowy figure stalking nubile young ladies through the halls of lower learning. If that sounds like a formula for entertainment, youll never run out of distractions. However, if youre looking for the one exception, hunker down to this harrowing rager that features none of the above. Christ, it doesnt even take place at a high school! Instead, were treated to the ruckus-raising adventures of four juvenile delinquents as theyre chased through the darkest reaches of a swampland hellhole by their female teacher! HELL HIGH was shot by a one-time-only gore-obsessed filmmaker, so as you might predict, talent and cohesion are sacrificed in the name of purely irresponsible subhuman entertainment. This deservedly seldom-seen moralitywhupper is guaranteed to offend and confuse anybody with an IQ over 1. If you dont feel nauseous while viewing this movie, drive yourself directly to prison after the screening. (Zack Carlson)

THE CHILDREN Dir. Max Kalmanowicz, 1980, PG, 93 min, 35mm RZ 4/9
Terror Tuesday continues its ongoing educational series on The Evils of Reproduction with this monumentally offensive assault against pre-adolescence. A schoolbus full of singing children (booo) travels through a cloud of toxic nuclear gas (yaaay) but the kids survive (BOOO). Fortunately, their radioactive vaporbath has transformed them into wee annihilation machines who microwave their victims by giving them adorable hugs. After several local residents meet their crispy demises, its learned that the rampaging nippers can only be stopped if you cut off both of their hands. This discovery leads to a rich array of satisfying child mutilation scenes. Sure, it doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but if I have the opportunity to watch a toddler get dismembered, Im not asking any questions. (Zack Carlson)

NIGHT OF THE CREEPS Dir. Fred Dekker, 1986, R, 88 min, 35mm RZ 4/16
Some people will tell you that certain low-budget 1980s horror movies are fun to watch. Theyll say, Have you seen THE WRAITH or RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD? Theyre fun on wheels! Well, guess what? Those people are major buttholes who dont know what theyre talking about. That, or theyve never seen NIGHT OF THE CREEPS. This movie is why fun was invented. In 1959, aliens send an experiment to earth that unleashes slimy slugs into peoples mouths. At the same time, a mental patient is going nutzo with an axe. Cut to: cryogenics. Cut to: 1986. Chris (Rusty from EUROPEAN VACATION!) and J.C. (he uses crutches for no apparent reason!) find themselves besieged with zombies, alien slugs, and a battle for love against a frat guy named Bradster. Filled with tongue-in-cheek homages, squirm-inducing gore, and thousands of insane ideas that always work, this is non-stop energy and non-stop satisfaction. Also, the Raymond-Chandler-obsessed detective hero is played by Tom Atkins (LETHAL WEAPON, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK), who is also known as The Best Guy Ever. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

ANOTHER SON OF SAM Dir. Dave Adams, 1977, R, 74 min, 35mm RZ 4/23
Ultra obscure! Ultra bananas! Never on DVD. Filmed in Charlotte, North Carolina by one-time director/writer/producer/editor/stunt coordinator/casting director (sonuvabitch!) Dave A. Adams, ANOTHER SON OF SAM could be called a protoslasher. I prefer to call it a rite of passage. This dirt-cheap true crime rip-off has no connection to Son Of Sam, let alone another Son of Sam. So whats it all about? I have no idea. But it has something to do with an escaped mental patient named Harvey, some sweet speedboat jumps, SWAT troopers, and a lounge singer named Johnny Charro. Plus, an abortion! However, this movie isnt really about the final outcome. Its about the JOURNEY. This is 74 minutes of mid-sentence freeze frames, drunken camera tricks, big fat synths, bloody deaths, and slow motion chases, all conspiring to build a ridiculous facsimile of an actual film. Dave A. Adams never made another movie, but he clearly never watched one before making ANOTHER SON OF SAM. Id call it even. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III Dir. Jeff Burr, 1990, R, 81 min, 35mm RZ 4/30
In the late 1980s, someone made the decision to reboot the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE franchise. Apparently, the general public was unhappy with the tonguein-cheek direction of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE PART 2. I had no problem when Leatherface dry-humped his girlfriend with a chainsaw in that movie. But whatever. The point is, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III was an attempt to get back to the gritty roots of the original 1974 film. In order to achieve this, Leatherface was given a Speak N Spell. Thats my recommendation. If you need more, take note that a pre-LORD OF THE RINGS Viggo Mortensen appears as Leatherfaces brother. And yes, this is the TEXAS CHAINSAW movie with the teaser trailer that spoofed EXCALIBUR and assured the world that, THE SAW IS FAMILY. REV IT UP. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

HORROR SHOW

CLASSICK FAVORITES ON THE BIG SCREEN!

Lets face it. The current millennium has not been kind to horror movies. For over a decade, weve had to deal with a constant pixelstorm of semi-sequels, requels, reboots, and ironic, self-aware plagiarism, while perfectly good chainsaws sit unused in the corner of the garage. So were taking it back! Back to when grown-ups could make a living by crafting plaster molds of nuclear mutants. Back to when computers were properly utilized to create spreadsheets, rather than severed limbs. Back to when creativity was not a means to make 80 million dollars, but to scare the bejesus out of audiences. HORROR SHOW is an eclectic new series that stalks the 1970s and 80s for the greatest, most electrifyingly satisfying horror offerings of the 20th Century. FUN IS GUARANTEED! SURVIVAL IS NOT!!

Horror Show: EVIL DEAD II Dir. Sam Raimi, 1987, R, 84 min LC 4/9, 4/12, 4/19 : VL 4/11, 4/13, 4/16
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Sam Raimi must be the happiest man on earth. Not content with creating one of the most ferocious and groundbreaking lo-fi horror movies ever, Raimi one-upped himself by reimagining the original EVIL DEAD as a parody. And also a sequel. Most civilians would fail to see the point in such an undertaking. Thankfully, were not most civilians. The gonzo, ultra-creative EVIL DEAD II reunites the iconic Ash (Bruce Campbell) with a possessed cabin in the woods. But this time, Raimi and co-writer Scott Spiegel werent happy with simply fashioning chainsaws as hands, decapitating demons, and filling up rooms with blood. They wanted more! And so, the spirit of the original EVIL DEAD was combined with The Three Stooges to create the definitive horrorcomedy of 1987 and also all years forever after infinity. If you see a movie in 2013 with the name Raimi on it, do the right thing. Make sure its this one. (Joseph A. Ziemba)

WEIRD WEDNESDAY

SPONSORED BY I LUV VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE RITZ FOR JUST THREE BUCKS!

HELLHOLE

THE DRAGON LIVES AGAIN Dir. Law Kei, 1977, R, 90 min, 35mm RZ 3/6
In 1973 martial arts star Bruce Lee was well on his way to becoming the most popular man on Planet Earth. Then he died. The movie going audiences of the world were not deterred by this inconvenient fact. They wanted MORE BRUCE LEE MOVIES - NOW! So, just as these brave pioneers have done so many times before, the cheap cigar brigade of unscrupulous exploitation film producers went to work, turning out imitation Bruce Lees by the dozen: Bruce Li, Bruce Le, Dragon Lee, Bronson Lee, and more. There are so many Lee-alike movies that they form a genre in themselves. And no Brucesploitation movie is weirder than this one. Heres the premise - seriously: Bruce Lee dies and goes to the underworld where he teams up with Dracula, The Godfather, The Exorcist, Clint Eastwood, James Bond, Emmanuelle, Popeye, and many others in an attempt to defeat the Lord Of Darkness. Its cheap, fast-moving, incredibly confusing, and hilarious. It will also reveal the very meaning of life, if youre interested in that kind of thing. (Lars)

KILL CASTRO Dir. Chuck Workman, 1980, R, 90 min, 35mm VL 3/13 (Note venue change due to SXSW)
Please note: due to SXSW, this film will be screened at our Village location. Man-pulp with the macho pedal strapped to the floor! With the coming of the 80s, the national testosterone level was at an all-time low. It was time for action! So a crack team of aging tough guys was assembled to make this mercenary mission movie. Unlike most male stars in the 80s, craggy hardcases Stuart Whitman, Robert Vaughn and Woody Strode were definitely NOT in touch with their emotions, unless face-punching is an emotion. Whitman, who lets his eyebrows do most of the talking, plays Captain Tony, one of those lovable mean Irish bastards who has a kick-ass boat, knows everybody in town and drinks a gallon of whiskey at breakfast. He and shady government operative Robert Vaughn get tricked into a doomed Fidel Castro assassination plot by turtle-loving mob guy Michael Gazzo (with his rasping voice), whose main enforcer is busty amazon Sybil Danning! With cockfights, big explosions and stock-footage shark attacks! Also known as MEAN DIRTY TONY. (Lars)

BUTTERFLIES Dir. Joseph Sarno, 1975, R, 93 min, 35mm RZ 3/20

One-of-a-kind writer/director Joe Sarno always maintained that the brain is our primary erogenous zone and while his erotically charged films are full of the usual quotient of sex and nudity it is the carefully constructed plots and situations that grab the audience, not the eye candy. Sometimes called the Ingmar Bergman of sex films, Sarno devotes far more time to establishing the interrelationships of his characters than any other erotic film makers, most of whom were content to hurl boobs at the audience with little or no context. As a result of Sarnos care and love, these films still hold a lot of interest today, while the indiscriminate boob parades provoke only yawns. BUTTERFLIES is the story of a farm girl who strikes out for the city only to find that the lights and glamour arent all they seem. Its one of the standard adult-movie plot lines, but Sarno works his magic as always, endowing the story with complexity and richness, and of course lots and lots of sex and nudity. (Lars)

WEIRD WEDNESDAY
HELLHOLE Dir. Pierre De Moro, 1985, R, 90 min, 35mm RZ 3/27
This is a really funny hybrid of mad science and women-in-prison movies. You will laugh a lot as you watch the screens preeminent bubbly blonde airhead Judy Landers, in a really demanding role that would probably give Meryl Streep nightmares, as a woman with amnesia mistakenly confined to a mental institution. There she is pursued by an evil murderer as she tries to avoid the human experimentation lab of Dr. Fletcher (the great Mary Woronov). If it were a wellmade, well-executed movie, it would probably be terrifying, but thankfully its not. Get ready to laugh a whole lot and then laugh some more for dessert. With Marjoe Gortner, Robert ZDar and a bunch of pretty ladies who dont want to wear clothes and dont have to. (Lars)

UP YOUR TEDDY BEAR Dir. Don Joslyn, 1970, R, 89 min, 35mm RZ 4/3
You want weird? Try this one on for size, tough guy. Wally Cox, who provided Underdogs voice in the 60s cartoon series, stars as a mild mannered clerk who has a genius for making toys. Julie Catwoman Newmar plays Mother, the head of a huge toy conglomerate, who wants to hire Wally. He refuses because the slinky Miss Newmar reminds him so much of his own mother (no wonder hes got problems). So she orders her assistant Skippy, played by 350-pound Victor Buono, to break down his resistance by providing him with an endless succession of prostitutes. That would be enough but the movie throws in at no extra charge Wallys kinky infantile dream sequences featuring Newmar as his mother. And (Oh no!) elephantine Victor Buono in drag. Some comedies just push everything too far - this is definitely one of those movies. Its full of big, cartoon-influenced, surreal comedy sequences that sometimes work and sometimes fall flat. But its always manic, interesting, and so, so strange. (Lars)

GATOR BAIT Dir. Ferd & Beverley Sebastian, 1974, R, 88 min, 35mm RZ 4/10
Picture yourself on a state highway in the rural south in 1974. In the distance an apparition flickers on a drive-in screen. Its a beautiful woman with long red hair and skin the color of mothers milk. She lifts a 12-gauge to eye level and squeezes the trigger. Its not a hallucination. Its Claudia Jennings, a common sight on drive-in screens throughout the country in the 70s and that rarest of things, a genuine female action star. The movie is GATOR BAIT, a big hit that kept drive-in audiences coming back again and again. Like most movies that made it big on the pickup-truck circuit, GATOR BAIT really delivers. The story of a sexy swamp rat named Desiree whos half woman and half savage, it features the scariest inbred hillbillies outside of the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and a revenge plot that builds to a thundering, foot-stomping climax. As an actress Claudia Jennings doesnt have a great deal of range, but then neither does a sawed-off shotgun. Under the right circumstances both can be devastating. (Lars)

SURF II: THE END OF THE TRILOGY Dir. Randall Badat, 1984, R, 91 min, 35mm RZ 4/17
Dont look for SURF I, because no such movie exists. In fact, there has never been another movie even remotely like SURF II. From the outside it looks a lot like a typical teens just wanna have fun comedy, but in reality, its the single most anarchic comedy of the decade, spring-loaded with non sequiturs, cultural satire, truly great comedic performances, and fun, fun, fun. When a pair of bad dads decide their beach neighborhood is overdue for gentrification, they enlist evil nerd scientist Eddie Deezen to create a cola formula that will turn all surfers into brain dead automatons. Some of the surfers have other ideas, and so does director Randall Badat, who turns every scene into an off-kilter masterpiece of energy, invention, and (yep) pure cinema. This has never been released on DVD because the world is doomed. (Lars)

MYSTERY TITLE 35mm RZ 4/24

For the last date of every two-month Weird Wednesday cycle, we reach into the 35mm vaults to retrieve a mystery title. In the past these have included bizarre Chinese kids movies, punishingly terrible teen comedies, and truly unforgettable rarely screened classics. As much as wed like to tell you what the mystery title is this month, we cant. I mean we could put in a request but there would be an application fee, and we couldnt even guarantee that wed have that information in time unless the expediting charge was added to that. So, it will just have to be a surprise unless, hey, is that a Rolex? Weve always wanted one of those. Can I try it on? So anyway, its a pretty closely guarded secret. (Lars)

A NEW AND CONTINUING SERIES DEDICATED TO EXHIBITION OF FILM ON THE LEGENDARY 70MM FORMAT.

THE DARK CRYSTAL

YEAR OF THE DRAGON Dir. Michael Cimino, 1985, R, 134 min, 70mm RZ 4/27 & 4/28
If I had been alive in 1985, Michael Ciminos YEAR OF THE DRAGON would have doubtlessly been my choice for the best picture of that year. Why? Because despite all the criticism and backlash that this film received about it being variously racist and sexist, its subject matter is actually about the distinctly American compulsion to place the blame on cultural others that if as a society we dont instinctively understand something deemed foreign, it must be somehow bad or wrong. It is a sincere and measured critique of the behavior for which it was lambasted in the press. Such is YEAR OF THE DRAGONs painful historic irony. Dont be fooled by its reputation: YEAR OF THE DRAGON is not simply a great film, but one of the greatest a film that examines a sickness that to this day plagues America. Michael Cimino, Mickey Rourke, and John Lone together create a portrait of New York City whose post-war wounds yet remain unhealed, where Chinese triad members fill the streets with drugs and violence, and only one cop seeks to effect positive change. As film critic F.X. Feeney wrote for Z Magazine in 1987: To go the distance with this movie is to be put in touch with reservoirs of feeling that defy easy analysis but define America in all its democratic genius and vicious, illustrious, fractious, imperial reality. For your reconsideration: Michael Ciminos YEAR OF THE DRAGON, presented in an extremely rare 70mm print, as part of our AlamoScope series. (Sam Prime)

THE DARK CRYSTAL Dirs. Jim Henson, Frank Oz, 1982, PG, 93 min, 70mm RZ 3/30 & 3/31
Few people have made more pure magic in their lifetime than did Jim Henson. THE DARK CRYSTAL is but a single example of his genius at work, working handin-hand with longtime collaborator Frank Oz. Henson and Oz together dreamed up and realized a fantastic, otherworldly landscape seemingly crafted out of an unadulterated imagination. Elf-like Gelflings are forced to battle the ruthless Skeksis to save their world from chaos. From the graceful Land-Striders to the looming crab-like Garthim to that wily, one-eyed heroic priestess Aulghra, Henson and Oz create an instantly memorable universe that any audience member with even half of a heart, brain, or soul will yearn to revisit time and time again. Come see this rare 70mm print of THE DARK CRYSTAL! (Sam Prime)

HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA Dirs. Werner Herzog & Dmitry Vasyukov, 2013, NR, 90 min RZ 3/2 - 3/4
Travel to the heart of the Siberian wilderness with Werner Herzog as your guide! Legendary documentary and narrative filmmaker Herzog has delighted audiences throughout the past decades with stunts like dragging a massive, true-to-life, 320ton steamship over a mountain in FITZCARRALDO (1982) and unearthing neverbefore-seen cave paintings in 3D in the recent CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS (2010). He also once infamously ate his own shoe, after losing a bet to the filmmaker Errol Morris. In this latest documentary adventure, Herzog highlights the remote village of Bakhtia deep in the Siberian wilderness, 300 people live almost outside of time and with an awe-inspiring simplicity that is too rare in the hustle and bustle of modern-day lives. Herzog presents a sincere, honest portrait of people who are truly happy and completely satisfied maintaining their own values and the cultural traditions that have lasted the last century. Cinema Club: SPARROWS w/ Library of Congress Christel Schmidt Dir. William Beaudine, 1926, PG, 90 min, 35mm RZ 3/3
Mary Pickfords penultimate silent film is a Dickensian tale of orphans living on a baby farm run by an evil caretaker. The movie boasts highly stylized sets, including a truly ominous swamp, and atmospheric cinematography that illustrates the growing influence of German expressionist cinema on American filmmakers in the 1920s. As one of Mary Pickfords darker-themed pictures, it is considered by many to be her best, including by her business partner and onscreen rival Charlie Chaplin. The feature is preceded by the Sparrows trailer, a surprise short film, and rarely-seen outtakes. Will feature a post-show conversation with Christel Schmidt, the editor of Mary Pickford: Queen of the Movies (co-published by the Library of Congress and the University Press of Kentucky), led by Alamo Drafthouse Film Programmer Sam Prime and RJ LaForce. 35mm restorations courtesy the Library of Congress. ROMAN HOLIDAY Dir. William Wyler, 1953, NR, 118 min RZ 3/5, 3/23, 3/24 : SR 3/6
ROMAN HOLIDAY remains one of the great romances in the history of Hollywood cinema! The story follows a rebellious Princess on an official tour of the capitals of Europe. While in Rome she sneaks out of her guarded room and ends up falling asleep on a bench. She is found by a straight-laced American newspaper reporter who takes her back to his room, but has no idea who she is. Hes there to cover the story of her tour and, when he finally realizes her identity, uses his luck to snag an exclusive interview. Of course, when love and Rome are involved, things dont always go according to plan. Star Audrey Hepburns legendary performance as secluded, sheltered Princess Ann secured her a place among the pantheon of silver screen icons. Her co-star Gregory Peck aint too shabby either as the newsman who wins her heart. Even decades after its release few screen romances are filled with this much freewheeling fun. Director William Wyler keeps the energy going while beautifully photographing the picturesque Roman backdrop to heart stopping effect. The Alamo is proud to bring you this 60th anniversary presentation of ROMAN HOLIDAY!

Badass Digest Presents: BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA Dir. Sam Peckinpah, 1974, R, 112 min RZ 3/18 : SR 3/19 & 3/21
Sam Peckinpah was cinemas poet laureate of alienated men on the edge, and BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA is his masterpiece. Bennie (Warren Oates) is a broken down drunk American living in Mexico, the kind of guy who tries to kill his crabs with tequila. When he hears a local crime lord has offered one million dollars for the head of Alfredo Garcia - a guy Bennie knows is already dead and buried - Bennie sees a way to make something of his life. Oates based Bennies look and character on Peckinpah himself, who had collapsed into a dissolute mess in the late stages of his career. Were proud to have this as the first screening of the Badass Digest Presents series. Not only is star Warren Oates the inaugural member of the Badass Hall of Fame, this movie represents the sort of uncompromising, vicious filmmaking we love. A critically lambasted flop at the time, BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA can now be seen as a brutal, honest, ugly, and gloriously violent summation of the dark impulses that drove Sam Peckinpah to greatness and self-destruction. (Devin Faraci)

Bangarang!: SE7EN Dir. David Fincher, 1995, R, 127 min VL 3/19 & 3/21 : RZ 3/25
The hackneyed plot kicks off with Det. Somerset (Morgan Freeman) just one week out from retirement in the homicide department. All that stands between him and some shuffleboard is one final casea case that teams him up with a you. From here the movie takes cruel turn after malicious corkscrew turn and leaves you questioning the anger and resentment that festers inside of all of us until it crescendos into an unconventional ending straight out of your best anti-hero movie of the 70s. No one says Im too old for this shit! and no one pulls any punches. David Fincher is a genius of atmosphere and SE7EN could be his greatest outing. The stakes are always high, and you perpetually feel at risk watching this grimy crime shocker. This film doesnt just mark the best of the 90s; it ranks amongst the greatest in the genre. And if David Fincher, Howard Shore, Brad Pitt, AND THE VOICE OF GOD cant get you into a theater to watch it this March...you could be the greatest sinner of them all. *Also before the show we will be having a gluttonous spaghetti eating competition. BANGARANG! (Greg MacLennan)

MONDO Presents: TAXI DRIVER w/ Exclusive Limited Edition Poster Dir. Martin Scorsese, 1976, R, 113 min RZ 3/20
Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), a man who dares to stand up to the filth and scum of the city around him, is an ex-Marine and Vietnam vet. In search of direction and purpose while living in New York City, Bickle spends his days in 42nd Street porno theaters and his insomniac nights as a taxi driver who works anytime, anywhere. He becomes fixated on Betsy (Cybill Shepherd) as his beacon of hope, a woman working hard on the presidential nomination campaign for the Senator Charles Palantine. After one date, he blows it with Betsy. In the frustration and anger that follow, his violent will to do good in a city rife with sin turns to Iris (Jodie Foster), a 12-year-old runaway and prostitute. Even if it is the last thing he does, he vows to save Iris from the mongrels that would have a child sell her body to the highest bidder. TAXI DRIVER is gritty, raw, and classic Scorsese at its best. AGFA and Temple of Schlock present: ENDANGERED FEST Dir. Various, 380 min, 35mm RZ 3/23
The American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) is an Austin-based repository that houses many film prints from the classic drive-in and exploitation era. In fact, it houses so many film prints, in so many different states of completeness and under so many different titles that new complete prints are uncovered all the time. Temple Of Schlock is a website edited by Chris Poggiali on which he celebrates and posts new research about just these kinds of titles. One popular feature on the site is The Endangered List, which catalogues films thought lost at one time or another. Now AGFA and Temple Of Schlock are teaming up to present four films, previously considered lost, now rediscovered in the AGFA vaults. Because these are all titles that played on the all-night grindhouse screens, it is only appropriate that the show will be an all-nighter. Expect lots of sex and violence with a chaser of more sex and violence. See you there! (Lars)

Tough Guy Cinema: THE WILD BUNCH Dir. Sam Peckinpah, 1969, R, 145 min, 35mm RZ 3/23 & 3/24
Director Sam Peckinpahs most celebrated masterpiece blasts its way across the screen and demands a truer understanding of what it means to be a genuinely TOUGH guy. William Holden leads a band of aging robbers through the hard world of the Old West as they try to outrun the bounty hunter (the legendary Robert Ryan) who is hot on their trail. The balletic violence and weary fatalism that Peckinpah brings to his vision of the American West is underscored by some of sweatiest, dirtiest, bloodiest performances from some of the the toughest, ugliest actors of all time. Ernest Borgnine, Ben Johnson, and Warren Oates shoot, screw, drink, and ride horses all while imbuing the films harsh, empty world with a sense of real poetry. This is a film about the mantle of violence passing from old professionals, who live by a code, to even more chaotic and deadly future generations. And what is the code these old men live by? Stand by your friends and against the world, take what you can get, and dont kill civilians...unless they get in the way. (Tommy Swenson)

Zzang!!!: MIDNIGHT RUN Dir. Martin Brest, 1988, R, 126 min, 35mm RZ 3/24
Monday... Escape with their lives from New York... Tuesday... Impersonate F.B.I. agents in Chicago... Wednesday... Steal plane in New Mexico... Thursday... Almost kill each other by accident... Friday... Almost kill each other on purpose. Charles Grodin has embezzled $15 million dollars from mob boss Dennis Farina, and its up to bounty hunter Robert DeNiro to get him to L.A. before Grodins bond defaults. The FBI wants Grodin to testify, the mob wants him dead, and DeNiro just wants his cash. This movie may just sound like an ODD COUPLE on the run, and, while it kind of is...its also awesome. A post-UNTOUCHABLES DeNiro wanted to take a stab at comedy, and, after being turned down for the main role in BIG, settled on this. While the studio originally wanted Cher or Robin Williams to star opposite DeNiro, director Martin I made BEVERLY HILLS COP Brest told the studio to go screw itself and took his project and incredible cast of characters actors elsewhere along with his co-star of choice, Mr. Charles Grodin. This film is a goldmine of comic genius and white-knuckled action as we bask in the glory of a fed-up wiseguy (DeNiro) and a whiny, weasely, sarcastic Grodin stumbling their way across the country. The plot is maybe a bit overly complicated but the chemistry on screen is worth the inclusion of every last double cross. You WILL forge a most unlikely friendship with this movie . Youre OK, Jack. I think... under different circumstances you and I probably still would have hated each other! (Greg MacLennan)

AGFA Deep Tracks: GANJA AND HESS (AKA: DOUBLE POSSESSION) Dir. Bill Gunn, 1973, R, 75 min, 35mm RZ 3/31 Cine Las Americas: ANITA Dir. Marcos Carnevale, 2009, NR, 104 min, 35mm VL 3/31
Co-presented by aGLIFF-Polari. Anita (Alejandra Manzo) is a young woman with Down syndrome who lives a happy life in Buenos Aires, under the meticulous care of her mother Dora (Academy Award nominee Norma Aleandro). One tragic morning in 1994, everything changes when Anita is left alone, confused and helpless after the nearby Argentine Israelite Mutual Association is bombed (one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Argentinas history). As Anita wanders through the city, she learns not only to care for herself, but touches the lives of those around her, from an alcoholic to a family of Asian immigrants. At every installment of the AGFA Deep Tracks series, we invite you to view a film from the murky depths of the American Genre Film Archive vault, with all proceeds benefiting the Archive. Our March title is: GANJA AND HESS (AKA: DOUBLE POSSESSION). Long thought lost, Bill Gunns GANJA AND HESS is a vampire narrative in which the word vampire is never uttered once. A film envisioned by its director as a horror and blaxploitation hybrid in the wake of BLACULA (1972), GANJA AND HESS missed its intended mark and instead became a completely sincere, although initially misunderstood, work of art. GANJA AND HESS regrettably bombed at the box office and was thereafter scooped up by various unsavory distributors who then respectively re-released it under different titles (BLOOD COUPLE and VAMPIRES OF HARLEM, for example). Our version is DOUBLE POSSESSION, a 75-minute drastically re-edited version of Gunns original 110-minute forgotten classic. You wont see this rare edition of the film anywhere else! (Sam Prime)

POSSESSION Dir. Andrzej Zulawski, 1981, R, 127 min, 35mm RZ 3/31, 4/7, 4/10
Back at the Drafthouse due to popular demand from audiences and staff members alike -- Zulawskis POSSESSION lights up the big screen in an uncut, 35mm presentation!!! Not since HAUSU has a restored underground classic taken the world of cinephiles by storm like POSSESSION. This has long been a favorite of ours, even though it has only been available on video bootlegs and badly cut 35mm prints. Now that a new print is making the rounds, thousands more people are having their brain reshaped by its intense, gory, psychosexual brilliance. Ostensibly a film about a break-up, director Andrzej Zulawski takes an overkill approach to pure cinema. Volumes could (and should) be written about the technical brilliance of the camerawork and sound - all of which shows the astonishing assurance of the greatest masters of the art, but the area where POSSESSION really takes flight is the performances. Sam Neill and especially Isabelle Adjani leave it all on the set, reaching deep into themselves to lift the material to even greater heights. This is not like any other movie youve ever seen before. Its better. Featuring a bizarre and unfathomably awesome music score by Andrzej Korzynski and creature effects by the late Carlo Rambaldi. If you have to choose between the birth of your first child and this film, choose this film. Highest possible recommendation. (Lars)

AIGA: BEAUTY IS EMBARRASING Dir. Neil Berkeley, 2012, NR, 91 min VL 4/1
A funny, irreverent, joyful and inspiring documentary featuring the life and current times of one of Americas most important artists, Wayne White. Raised in the mountains of Tennessee, Wayne White started his career as a cartoonist in New York City. He quickly found success as one of the creators of the TV show, PEE WEES PLAYHOUSE, which led to more work designing some of the most arresting and iconic images in pop culture. Most recently, his word paintings, which feature pithy and often sarcastic text statements crafted onto vintage landscape paintings, have made him a darling of the fine art world. BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING chronicles the vaulted highs and the crushing lows of a commercial artist struggling to find peace and balance between his work and his art. Acting as his own narrator, Wayne guides us through his life using moments from his latest creation: a hilarious, biographical one-man show.

Tough Guy Cinema: FACE/OFF Dir. John Woo, 1996, R, 138 min LC 4/6 : RZ 4/7 & 4/30 : SR 4/27
In order to catch him... he must become him. Fresh off the success of HARD BOILED, John Woo hit the American scene with HARD TARGET starring (none other than resident Tough Guy) Jean-Claude Van Damme. Despite HARD TARGET being totally, incredibly snake-punchingly awesome, Woo encountered nonstop studio interference during his first American film that it would go on to plague his second release, BROKEN ARROW. After being soured by the Hollywood studio system, Woo resolved to not work on anything unless he had more creative and editorial control, and, after rejecting FACE/OFF several times, he finally agreed to make the movie he wanted, and, OH MAN, is it WOO-TASTIC. John Travolta and Nic Cage star as a cop and criminal tangled in a vicious game of cat and mouse. When notoriously slow peach-eater, Castor Troy (Nic Cage), ends up in a coma, and the only person who knows the location of a bomb that is set to destroy the City of Angels is Castors brother, Eagle Scout Sean (Travolta) is forced to undergo an emergency experimental surgery that will put his greatest enemys face...on himself. Bullets whiz and doves fly. John Travolta gets to act like Nicholas Cage, and Nicolas Cage gets to act like a TOTAL FUCKING MANIAC in an action movie that has no words to describe its brilliant insanity. Watching 90s John Woo in high gear is like watching Michael Bay have a three-way with the CRANK movies while the Devil himself watches. It is top-notch action and spectacularly entertaining with totally overthe-top performances. Grab a dead grandparent because this one is guaranteed to put the pulse back into even the most lifeless and joyless soul as Tough Guy Cinema prepares IN-THEATER PYROTECHNICS for FACE/OFF. (Greg MacLennan) I want to take his face... off. Eyes, nose, skin, teeth. Its coming off.

Big Screen Classics: THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN Dir. Terry Gilliam, 1988, PG, 126 min RZ 4/8 & 4/9
A true story. Weve got the film to prove it. Its no secret that Terry Gilliam and movie studios dont get along, but no Gilliam movie has more misconceptions about it than THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN. Gilliam was caught up in a studio shuffle that saw one head leaving and a new regime taking over. When MUNCHAUSEN finally wrapped, the new powers-that-be simply dumped this film out with so few prints that it was destined to be a financial flop. As a result, public perception was that this was a terrible movie, when, in reality, its a multi-Oscar nominated film that was released to reviews that didnt match its financial failure. Amid a war-torn city being invaded by the Turks, a theatrical production of Baron Munchausen is soon interrupted the REAL Baron Munchausen, who recounts the tale of what really happened. What follows is a revisionist view of the enchanting adventures of Baron von Munchausen on his journey to save a town from defeat. Being swallowed by a giant sea-monster, falling through the center of the Earth, a trip to the moon, a dance with Venus, and an escape from the Grim Reaper are all just a few events of his spectacular life. This movie pushed the visual effects envelope in 1988 and blows away anything youll see even today. Gilliams use of practical effects will make you believe a horse can still run in two halves, John Neville can fly if he holds onto a cannonball tightly enough, and Robin Williams can dislocate his head at the neck. This film was over budget, over-indulged, completely remarkable, unbelievable, impossible...and true. (Greg MacLennan)

Londons West End: GREAT EXPECTATIONS Dir. Graham McLaren, 2013, NR, 145 min SR 4/13, 4/14, 4/18
For the very first time, the Dickens classic GREAT EXPECTATIONS will be staged in Londons West End, and audiences around the world will be able to share the historic opening night experience at their local theater. Although GREAT EXPECTATIONS has been adapted for film on two separate occasions, once by David Lean in 1946 and most recently by Mike Newell, it has never been produced for The West End or Broadway, widely believed to be too difficult to translate to stage. However, this Jo Clifford adaptation has been universally acclaimed as a triumph on its sellout tour of the UK head of its West End debut. The event will form part of the global celebrations surrounding the 200th Anniversary of the Dickens birth.

Bangarang!: DARKMAN Dir. Sam Raimi, 1990, R, 96 min, 35mm RZ 4/13 : VL 4/15 & 4/17
They destroyed everything he had, everything he was. Now crime has a new enemy, and justice has a new face. In the 80s, Sam Raimi tried (and ultimately failed) to secure rights to both BATMAN and THE SHADOW. Instead of getting all bent out of shape about it, he elected to create his own superhero: one that felt no pain and could change his face to battle criminals. People keep talking about the rebirth of Liam Neeson lately as an action star, but those people clearly havent seen him in DARKMAN or ROB ROY. Long before he ever punched a wolf or saved his daughter from being a sex slave, Neeson was getting blown up in buildings and destroying gangsters with his bare hands. Peyton Westlake (Neeson) was just an ordinary scientist developing the latest in synthetic skin until, one day, a group of thugs break into his lab and blow him up. Nearly burned to death and barely alive, Peyton sets up shop in an abandoned warehouse where he develops skin masks to disguise himself and help bring the people who wronged him to justice. What follows is an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride of rage and redemption with Neesons anguished face at the wheel.Raimi was putting a real stakes price on crimefighting long before any of these contemporary emo kid superheroes showed up to the party. So, grab a ticket and prepare for pain because this movie will set your eyeballs on fire. (Greg MacLennan) Im everyoneand no one. Everywhere nowhere. Call me... Darkman.

AGFA Deep Tracks: WEEKEND WARRIORS Dir. Bert Convy, 1986, R, 89 min, 35mm RZ 4/14
At every installment of the AGFA Deep Tracks series, we invite you to view a film from the murky depths of the American Genre Film Archive vault, with all proceeds benefiting the Archive. Our April title is: WEEKEND WARRIORS (AKA: HOLLYWOOD AIR FORCE). The one and only feature film directed by Bert Convy, better known as the on-air host of Super Password and countless other TV game shows, WEEKEND WARRIORS is a film in the tradition of AIRPLANE! (1980). A riotous, sophomoric send-up of Hollywood wannabes, the Air National Guard, and the Armed Forces in generally one particularly memorable scene, the new recruits bond over an impromtu bean-eating competition, which ends with a record-setting nuclear blast fart. Starring Lloyd Bridges, Chris Lemmon (Jack Lemmons son), and Vic Tayback (not Jack Lemmons son), WEEKEND WARRIORS is unabashedly one of a kind. (Sam Prime)

Zzang!!!: USED CARS Dir. Robert Zemeckis, 1980, R, 113 min, 35mm RZ 4/14
Russellmania was a blissful day at the Alamo Drafthouse. We got to celebrate many things Kurt Russell, from features to trailers, and no trailer seemed to resonate with people quite like USED CARS. This early collaboration between writer Bob Gale and writer/director Robert Zemeckis (who went on to make the BACK TO THE FUTURE movies together) features one of the truly great and defining performances from perfect human, Kurt Russell. We had a SOPHIES CHOICE in selecting that Kurt Russell marathon line up, but whos to say Sophie wouldnt have cheated and chosen them both if she could have. And so our Kurt Russell love will prosper as we see him as the slimy, lying, roguish and impeccably dressed salesman on a used car lot. There, he has to hide the fact that his boss (the incredible Jack Warden) has died from the evil and conniving brother of his boss (also Jack Warden in an amazing double performance) who is trying to steal the lot for himself. Overloaded with true comedic power and fantastically risky onetake stunts and set pieces, USED CARS is a wild tribute to the qualities that define America: corruption, deceit and dishonesty. Its also the only R-rated movie from the family-friendly Zemeckis, so dont miss out on Kurt Russell doing lots of choice swears. USED CARS will annihilate you. (Tommy Swenson & Greg MacLennan)

Big Screen Classics: TIME BANDITS Dir. Terry Gilliam, 1981, PG, 110 min, 35mm RZ 4/15 & 4/17
All the dreams youve ever had and not just the good ones...they didnt make history, they stole it! Childrens programming is what it is today because of Terry Gilliam. Nobody had dared to entertain and provoke children and parents alike with a family film the way Terry Gilliam did. TIME BANDITS straps you down, suspends your disbelief and sets you on an eye-opening rollercoaster ride through a phantasmagoric landscape from the perspective of a child. This movie is as important as it is entertaining and thats why the Alamo is bringing it back for a RARE 35mm Big Screen Classics screening. Imaginative Kevin has parents that are clueless and tuned out, their only focus is...consumption. Kevin has no escape until one night when his wardrobe bursts open and six larcenous dwarves fall out. He soon finds that these diminutive bandits have stolen the map of the universe from the Supreme Being, who is in hot pursuit while Evil monitors them all. Kevin reluctantly joins in with the band and is soon swept up into a journey through history, myth, legend, and fairy tale featuring the likes of Robin Hood (John Cleese), Agamemnon (Sean Connery), Napoleon (Ian Holm) and other lesser known beings expertly played by an all-star cast. Big Screen Classics: THE SHINING Dir. Stanley Kubrick, 1980, R, 146 min RZ 4/20 - 4/22
Under normal circumstances, I consider myself grateful to my father for allowing me to watch any film that I expressed interest in, MPAA rating be damned, from the time I was 5 years old onward. THE SHINING, however, is the single exception. I do not exactly recall how young I was when I first saw this film, but I do know that I have been unrelentingly terrified of it and of one horrible sequence in particular ever since first seeing it. THE SHINING presents a kind of absolute horror that grows subtly from within, an intangible and curiously evasive type of terror that is there one second and all but disappears the next. On the occasion of Nicholsons birthday (April 22nd) and the release of Rodney Aschers ROOM 237, a documentary that explores the hidden meanings in THE SHINING, we present a special engagement of this classic by Kubrick, a master craftsman. (Sam Prime)

Asian Invasion: YOJIMBO Dir. Akira Kurosawa, 1961, UR, 110 min, 35mm RZ 4/21 & 4/24
A wandering ronin named Sanjuro (Toshiro Mifune) stumbles upon a rural 19th Century Japanese town split down the middle by two rival gangs. Having no clear allegiance to either side, he decides to play each against the other in an attempt to lead both towards extinction. What follows is an ultra-tense cinematic showdown at high noon between cat and mouse. Unfortunately, Sanjuros carefully laid plan begins to unravel when the son of one gangster arrives in town: the wily, ruthless, and uncouth Unosuke (Tatsuya Nakadai), who boasts not only blade, but also revolver. When the game changes, Sanjuro finds himself in a fight for his life and the lives of the innocent citizens caught in the middle. Unquestionably Japans biggest stars of the period, Mifune and Nakadai appear together here onscreen for the first time ever this was, and honestly still is, the biggest of big deals. Aside from THE SEVEN SAMURAI (1954), YOJIMBO is Kurosawas best and most celebrated work. To see it on 35mm is to be in awe of a master and his actors who were, are, and always will be towering giants. (Sam Prime)

Cinema Club: GRAND HOTEL w/ Dr. Thomas Schatz Dir. Edmund Goulding, 1932, NR, 112 min, 35mm RZ 4/21
People come and go. Nothing ever happens. In this edition of Cinema Club, Dr. Thomas Schatz, author of multiple, renowned books on the Hollywood studio system and UT professor, joins us for a screening of GRAND HOTEL. In the canon of Hollywood classics GRAND HOTEL has been lost in the shuffle. This 1932 masterpiece from hard working industry professionals Edmund Goulding and Irving Thalberg still stands as one of the very best movies the Hollywood studio system ever made. The film follows a handful of residents in a posh Berlin hotel. And the lineup of characters is a dandy: they include a sly German jewel thief, an American accountant living it up after a fatal diagnosis, a Russian ballerina on the verge of a nervous breakdown, an industrialist and his stenographer. This setup allows the film to effortlessly explore themes of entitlement, class structure and celebrity, all of which were extremely relevant in Hollywood in the years following the Great Depression. And no less than Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford and John Barrymore highlight the films whos-who cast of Hollywood legends. How GRAND HOTEL, a sweeping spectacle and intimate character study of the absolute highest order, has not become a popular staple of the grand days of Hollywood is a shame. See for yourself as we screen this overlooked gem in beautiful 35mm! (R.J. LaForce)

For the past thirty years, Michael Ciminos HEAVENS GATE has been haunted by the history of its initial release in New York City and the undue savaging it received from the influential critics of the time. Hot off the 5 Oscars that came with THE DEER HUNTER in 1978, audiences and critics alike expected great things from Cimino, but were apparently not ready for what he had in mind for his next project. A $44 million dollar prestige picture, the most highly anticipated film the year if not the decade, HEAVENS GATE opened to poor reviews and audiences unwilling to brave its nearly 4-hour running time. HEAVENS GATE failed to gross back even 10% of its investment. The uncut version of the film never opened anywhere else but the New York City circuit. It later played Los Angeles theaters in a reworked, truncated version (more than an hour shorter than the original) but still failed to garner the support necessary to recoup the money that went into making it. As a result, HEAVENS GATE infamously triggered the collapse of the studio that had so confidently backed it: United Artists. It sank a studio, to be sure, and has carried this spectre with it ever since. Now, in 2013, perhaps enough time has passed for HEAVENS GATE to step out from the shadow of its notorious history and be considered on its own merits. Thanks to a new DCP restoration supervised by Cimino himself, we have the luxury to reevaluate this historical epic about the Johnson County Wars of the 1890s, to revisit a narrative about the American Dream decades after it was spurned and dismissed by the few who saw it. We at the Drafthouse proudly present the 2012 directors cut of HEAVENS GATE. (Sam Prime)

ESCAPE FIRE: THE FIGHT TO RESCUE AMERICAN HEALTHCARE Dirs. Susan Frmke and Matthew Heineman, 2012, PG-13, 95min RZ 4/7
This free screening courtesy of Seton Healthcare Family. ESCAPE FIRE tackles one of the most pressing issues of our time: how can we save our badly broken healthcare system? About 65 percent of Americans are overweight and almost 75 percent of healthcare costs are spent on preventable diseases that are the major causes of disability and death in our society. ESCAPE FIRE examines the powerful forces maintaining the status quo, a medical industry designed for quick fixes rather than prevention, for profit-driven care rather than patient-driven care. After decades of resistance, a movement to bring innovative high-touch, low-cost methods of prevention and healing into our high-tech, costly system is finally gaining ground. This film follows dramatic human stories as well as leaders fighting to transform healthcare at the highest levels of medicine, industry, government, and even the US military.

GIRLIE NIGHT

CELEBRATING THE MUCH-LOVED BUT OFTEN NEGLECTED GENRE OF SLUMBER PARTY MOVIES. AT GIRLIE NIGHT, YOU CAN SQUEE AND SWOON WITHOUT SHAME. SERIOUSLY.

Broadway Brunch: BYE BYE BIRDIE

PRIDE & PREJUDICE Dir. Joe Wright, 2005, PG, 127 min SR 3/5 : LC 3/6 : RZ 3/19 & 3/26
Two words: Mr. Darcy. Seriously, this description should just end there because WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED? What more does ANY woman need than the brooding, handsome, totally swoon-worthy Mr. Darcy? Ok, well, Pemberly doesnt hurt. Nor do all of the fancy balls and gorgeous dresses and romantic intrigue and GAH I want to hate Elizabeth Bennet for being such a lucky bitch but I cant. Shes too awesome. Now, you may be one of those Austen purists who will only watch the BBC version with Colin Firth (which is, admittedly, a masterpiece). If so, I feel the need to point out that hello, did you miss the POINT of the story? Its not good to be prideful OR prejudiced! Give this 2005 version a chance, and within minutes youll be enchanted by the new interpretation of the characters (although Keira is still way too skinny) and even the non-Colin Firth Mr. Darcy (not, it turns out, an oxymoron!). Oh you guys, Im getting so excited just writing about it! Like when they almost kiss in the rain and when Judi Dench shows up and Lizzy realizes she still has a chance and OMG! I cant wait for Girlie Night so we can all swoon together! (Sarah Pitre)

Alamo Kids Camp: ANNIE Dir. John Huston, 1982, PG, 127 min VL 3/11 - 3/15
Leapin lizards! Nothing against my parents, but after the first time I saw ANNIE as a child, I wanted to be an orphan so badly. I yearned to spend my days performing cleaning dances while singing Its a Hard Knock Life, and I couldnt wait for Daddy Warbucks (Albert Finney) to whisk me away to his huge mansion. (In fact, Im still hoping this might happen, although cleaning isnt nearly as fun as orphans make it look.) ANNIE continues to shine like the top of the Chrysler building as a musical classic, and were giving a whole new generation the chance to fall in love with that spunky redhead (played by the irresistible Aileen Quinn) and her trusty dog, Sandy. From the deliciously awful Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett) to the taciturn and towering Punjab (Geoffrey Holder), this film is studded with stellar performances and show-stopping numbers. You can bet your bottom dollar that you and your kids will leave the theater with a huge smile on your face and Tomorrow stuck in your head. We love you, Miss Hannigan! (Sarah Pitre)

GIRLIE NIGHT

Music Monday: JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS Dirs. Harry Elfont & Deborah Kaplan, 2001, PG-13, 98 min, 35mm RZ 3/18 & 3/25
In college, I listened to the JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS soundtrack so much, I forgot they werent a real band. And yes, I do know all of the words to Du Jours Backdoor Lover. (Comin from behind with the lights down low!) In my opinion, this sassy gem of a film is insanely underrated, and Im not just saying that because Ive been brainwashed by Mega Records. (Gatorade is the new Snapple!) The script pops with humor, the songs actually rock, and the roster of actors is almost too good be true. Rachel Leigh Cook is adorable as Josie, but its Alan Cumming and Parker Posey who steal the show as unhinged record producers Wyatt and Fiona. I would die to crash their slumber party, but instead, Ill settle for celebrating my favorite fictional band at this special Girlie Night edition of Music Monday, where you are definitely encouraged to sing along. (Dont pretend like you havent memorized all of the lyrics.) Grab your best pair of cat ears, slip on your Du Jour t-shirt and prepare for a totally jerkin night. (Sarah Pitre)

Afternoon Tea: A ROOM WITH A VIEW Dir. James Ivory, 1985, UR, 117 min LC 3/23
Afternoon Tea is always a classy affair, but in March, were getting especially highbrow with the Merchant-Ivory adaptation of E.M. Forsters literary masterpiece, A ROOM WITH A VIEW. Set at the turn of the twentieth century, this magnificent film focuses on Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter), a young Englishwoman on a tour of Italy under the watchful eye of her chaperone, Charlotte Bartlett (played by our beloved Maggie Smith). When she meets the dashing and free-spirited George Emerson (Julian Sands), Lucy slowly begins to break free from social conventions and learns to exert her own independence. Also featuring Daniel Day-Lewis and Judi Dench, this Academy Award winner for Best Adapted Screenplay will dazzle you with glorious cinematography, splendid costumes and a coming-of-age story that never fails to resonate. Pair this captivating film with premium organic tea and delectable treats, and you will most certainly enjoy the view. (Sarah Pitre)

LEGALLY BLONDE Dir. Robert Luketic, 2001, PG-13, 96 min SR 4/3 & 4/10 : RZ 4/16 & 4/23
If it was up to Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon), this paragraph would be a super cool video essay highlighting all of the reasons why you should come to Girlie Nights presentation of LEGALLY BLONDE. There would be a montage of Elle (and Bruiser) modeling sensational outfits, a lesson on how to Bend and Snap, a shot of Luke Wilson being adorable and a generous serving of sassy dialogue. But even though we dont have a video, we hope youll make like Harvard Law and admit our favorite Gemini vegetarian into your movie-watching schedule. At Aprils Girlie Night, well celebrate Elles victories, hate on Warner (Matthew Davis) and wear our best pink ensembles. (Because whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed.) So grab your sorority sister or a hot UPS guy and join us for a fabulous evening thats guaranteed to be better than those four amazing hours in the hot tub after winter formal. (Sarah Pitre)

Broadway Brunch: BYE BYE BIRDIE Dir. George Sidney, 1963, NR, 112 min RZ 4/13 & 4/14
Heres the story, morning glory. If you want to put on a happy face, dont miss the Broadway Brunch presentation of BYE BYE BIRDIE! Inspired by the teen mania over Elvis Presley, this exuberant musical follows the intertwining stories of Kim McAfee (the feisty Ann-Margret), a regular high school girl picked to receive a kiss from music star Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson), and down-on-his-luck songwriter Albert F. Peterson (Dick Van Dyke) and his girlfriend Rosie DeLeon (Janet Leigh), who have a plan to revive Alberts career with Birdie performing a song on The Ed Sullivan Show. (And yes, Ed Sullivan plays himself.) Packed with insanely catchy tunes, this colorful musical will leave you in high spirits, especially after few mimosas. And our brunch menu is so delicious, youll be doing the Birdie dance in your seat. So if youve got a lot of livin to do, Broadway Brunch is the perfect way to get started. We love you, Conrad, oh yes we do! (Sarah Pitre)

Afternoon Tea: A LITTLE PRINCESS Dir. Alfonso Cuaron, 1995, G, 97 min LC 4/27
For this special mother-daughter edition of Afternoon Tea, you and your little princess are invited to enjoy Alfonso Cuarons gorgeous adaptation of the classic novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Sara Crewe (Liesel Matthews) is an imaginative young girl who loves to regale her fellow boarding school students with tales of her life in India. When her father is killed in World War I, Sara is forced into servitude by the evil headmistress, Miss Minchin (Eleanor Bron), but this change of fortune is no match for the power of her imagination. A celebration of friendship and the magic of dreams, A LITTLE PRINCESS is an enchanting, beautiful film, and while youre feasting your eyes on the screen, youll also be savoring delicious tea and treats, which are included with your ticket. Bring your mother, daughter or any special woman in your life and join us for a heartwarming cinematic journey that reminds girls of an important truth: were all special. Were all princesses! TAR w/ James Franco in-person!

Dionysium VL 3/6 : 4/3

The Dionysium offers a unique, innovative program of debate, lecture, declamation, theatrical presentation and music in a salon-like atmosphere on the first Wednesday of every month at the Alamo South Lamar. Audiences enjoy offerings not to be found elsewhere in Austin, including the recitation of famous speeches, participatory discussion in a formal, moderated context, and the opportunity to participate in the recreation of Ancient rituals. A typical Dionysium show will feature a lecture, a declamation, a drinking song, a film or live musical performance, an appeal to Dionysus, a fiction-writing contest, and plenty of strong drink. But the heart of every Dionysium is the debate, pitting two experts against each other in toe-to-toe parliamentary combat. Dionysium debate resolutions have covered everything from Social Security reform to the future threat of genocidal robots.

TAR w/ James Franco in-person! Dir. Various, 2012, NR, 72 min RZ 3/6
A jam session in cinematic form - TAR is a short film collection inspired by the work of poet C.K. Williams, winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Written and directed by 12 filmmakers, the film brings together several of C.K. Williams best known poems, giving rise to a freeform poetic journey through the life of C.K. Williams. Travelling through time and so many decades of his life, Williams is pervaded by a feeling of rejuvenation and at the same time one of loss, including the sense of meetings past and present. His constant contact with the past and the desire to preserve memory prevent him from being close to his wife and from uniting his memories to life in the present. But during the journey he is able realize how both are very important. Producer / actor James Franco in person for Q&A. (Rome Film Festival / Sam Prime - transliteration)

With composer Cliff Martinez live in-person!!! Its been just over a year since DRIVE came to movie theaters and quickly became an obsession for film aficionados everywhere. Nicolas Winding Refns highly stylized, atmospheric effort stars Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stunt driver who, when off set, sells his talent to whoever wants to pay. Standards in debt with mobsters and needs to rob a pawn shop to make up the debt and needs a skilled getaway driver. FAMILY FUN

A SELECTION OF NEW AND OLD CLASSICS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Alamo Kids Camp: HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS

Alamo Kids Camp: HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS Dir. Joe Johnston, 1989, PG, 93 min, 35mm LC 3/11 - 3/15
We all know that in terms of wild and vivid cinematic imagination, the 1980s represented the apex of all creative endeavors anywhere, at anytime: past, present, or utopian future. Never has this been more instantly recognizable than in HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS, where the modern, mundane world suddenly becomes gargantuan and totally mystifying. Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis) is a proud father of two and scientist on the verge of a major discovery, the ability to miniaturize people and things to insect-like proportions. What is the exact purpose of his scientific endeavor? Well, its not entirely clear, but when his son and daughter accidentally zap themselves into miniatures, their backyard becomes an untamed jungle and the fight for survival begins. How do you tell your wife that your big breakthrough invention might have endangered the lives of your wonderfully precious children? You just look her in the eye and say, Honey, I shrunk the kids. (Sam Prime)

Alamo Kids Camp: THE NEVERENDING STORY Dir. Wolfgang Petersen, 1984, PG, 102 min SR 3/11 - 3/15
Everyone should remember watching THE NEVERENDING STORY as a kid. I dont care when you were born. This classic 80s adventure has so many timeless and memorable characters - Atreyu and his horse Artex, the racing snail, that princess without a name. I could go on. Its a treasure trove of emotion and imagination and that still remains one of the most original family films ever, even 30 years after it was released. So if you know any little guys or gals make sure they dont miss out and take them along on this unforgettable, non-CGI journey!

Kids Club: THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T Dir. Roy Rowland, 1953, UR, 89 min, 35mm VL 4/5 - 4/11
Much-loved author and illustrator Dr. Seuss, the creator and co-writer of THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T, reportedly called this wildly original movie-musical a debaculous fiasco upon its initial theatrical release because audiences apparently were not yet ready for a film as purely imaginative as this. Since then, it has developed a cult appreciation among audiences both young and old for its appropriately dreamlike realization of the sheer wonder within Seuss narrative world. Young Bart Collins (Tommy Rettig) dozes off while practicing his dreaded piano lessons and finds himself deep in slumberland wherein elements of his day-to-day life take on a fantastic character. His piano teacher, Dr. Terwilliker, manifests as an evil genius who needs 500 piano students (5,000 fingers!) to operate his giant piano 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and who on top of all of that intends to take Barts mom for his wife. Only with the help of plumber August Zabladowski can Bart save his mom and the other 499 students of the Terwilliker Institute from a life of imprisonment at the pianos pearly white keys! (Sam Prime)

Kids Club: BMX BANDITS Dir. Brian Trenchard-Smith, 1983, NR, 88 min, 35mm RZ 4/27
In Sydney, Australia, three best friends with a penchant for all-day BMX bike stunt ridin unexpectedly find a case of stolen walkie-talkies that belong to some seriously mean dudes, local mobsters intending to pull a major bank heist. Empowered with a sense of honor, justice, and total responsibility, these three young heroes single-handedly take on the mob in an effort to prevent crime from spreading throughout their town. Featuring high-flying stunt work and breathtaking car vs. BMX chase sequences from the genre film master Brian Trenchard-Smith, BMX BANDITS is totally wacky, utterly sincere, and more than the sum of its wonderful parts on all accounts. Also, BMX bandits features a young Nicole Kidman in her first film role! GET ON YOUR BIKE AND RIDE!!! (Sam Prime)

AFS Essential Cinema: Children of Abraham/Ibrahim 7: Films of the Middle East and Beyond
In the past year, the Middle East and North Africa have continued being hotspots of political activity and social unrest. Some hopes of the Arab Spring seem to have faltered, while Syria has descended into a winter of despair and Iran continues its repressive measures. Our series of films from these regions will continue looking at the lives of ordinary people as depicted by filmmakers native to or familiar with the region. As always, we will see a wide array of subjects beautifully or powerfully handled by expert filmmakers. Beginning the series is the awardwinning film about a day in the life of silenced Iranian film director Jafar Panahi. Then comes a wonderful film about a suicide bomber deterred from his mission by love. Following that is a surprise feminist film from Egypt. An Israeli film by the director of THE BANDS VISIT (shown by AFS in an earlier version of this series) will focus on a young boys disintegrating family. We plan to have a Q&A with one of the principal actors, Alon Pdut. We will also show a star-crossed lovers film from the Palestinian Territories. Then comes a charming Turkish feature about a man who dreams of going places during his daily grind in a highway toll booth. Ending the series will be a sweeping Turkish epic about the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman imperial army and navy in 1453. Chale Nafus, Director of Programming, Austin Film Society

AUSTIN FILM SOCIETY

THE LONG JOURNEY w/ actor Alon Pdut in attendance! Dir. Eran Kolirin, 2004, NR, 82 min VL 3/19
This insightful character study of an extended family was a TV movie directed by Eran Kolirin, who a few years later would make the much loved THE BANDS VISIT. Here, in THE LONG JOURNEY he was focused on a young boy obsessed with basketball and with dreams of meeting a famous Israeli player at a practice game his father has promised to take him to. But the father has too many problems -separation from his wife, gambling debts, and a crumby sales job representing house trinkets no one wants. The boys mother is trying to date men she meets over the internet, but they are all jerks of one sort or another. Her parents have their own issues, especially her father who is obsessed with a neighbor who seems to always get his way, even with an unjustified Handicapped parking sign. The film takes place in less than 24 hours, but during the scenes from that day and night we learn a lot about some everyday people just trying to get by in modern-day Israel. The actor Alon Pdut now lives in Austin and will be on hand for a Q&A following the film. You can see his most recent performance in OUT IN THE DARK, an Israeli film well received at Toronto in 2012.

TOLL BOOTH Dir. Tolga Karaelik, 2010, NR, 96 min, 35mm VL 4/2
A toll booth worker dreams of travels while the world passes him by on the freeway.

CONQUEST 1453 Dir. Faruk Aksoy, 2012, NR, 160 min VL 4/9
When 19-year-old Fatih Mehmet inherited the extensive Ottoman Empire from his father, he set his heart on conquering Constantinople, the last vestige of the Roman/Byzantine Empire.

HABIBI RASAK KHARBAN w/ director Susan Youssef in attendance! Dir. Susan Youssef, 2011, NR, 85 min VL 3/26
HABIBI RASAK KHARBAN is a digital narrative feature that is a modern day retelling of an ancient Sufi parable set in present-day Gaza. The film tells the tale of two lovers who struggle between both Israeli occupation and Palestinian traditions, and eventually are torn apart.
