Rabindar@2007

Introduction
Malaysia may have a large reservoir sporting talent. This include children/athletes already participating in sport along with latent (undiscovered) talent. There is a need for these talented children/athletes to be identied and selected more effectively so as to assist National Sports Associations in their development projects.
Rabindar@2007

Introduction
This will also facilitate tracking of children/athletes from remote areas/disadvantaged communities ultimately resulting in the selection of national teams being more representative of the composition of Malaysian population.

Rabindar@2007

Introduction
Note: There is no one correct identication and selection. model for talent

It is dependent on the culture of the nation, complexity of the sport and the infrastructure of the sports at a local, state and national level.

Rabindar@2007

Introduction
Before describing the type of models that may be necessary, lets us provide some clarity with regard to terminology in the area of: Talent Identication Talent Selection Talent Development
Rabindar@2007

Screening of children and adolescents using selected tests of physical, physiological and skill attributes in order to identify those potential for success in a designated sport.
Previous involvement in the sport is not a pre-requisite for Identication

What is Talent Identication?

Rabindar@2007

Screening (measurement and/or identication) of young athletes currently participating in a sport using experienced coaches and/ or physical, physiological and skill tests in order to identify those most likely to succeed in that sport.

What is Talent Selection

Rabindar@2007

8
Following the Talent Identication and/ or Selection Process the children/athlete must be provided with an adequate infrastructure to enable them to develop to their full potential. This includes the provision of appropriate coaching, training and competition programmes, along with access to appropriate equipment, facilities, sport sciences and medicine and educational and life management support.

What is Talent Development?

Rabindar@2007

Are These Children Talented?

Rabindar@2007

10

Rabindar@2007

11

Benets of Talent Identication, Selection and Development

Provide talented youngsters with the opportunity to develop their sports skills. Optimise the potential for all individuals to achieve sporting success. Provide adequate participation. stimulation for continued

Steer children away from sports they are not suited to.
This may decrease the number of injuries that occur with children playing sports that are better suited to their physical and physiological attributes.

33

How are the children selected?

Rabindar@2007

34

Selection Criteria
Selection is based on percentile scores
From these percentile scores each child will be awarded a performance score of 1 for below the 10th percentile and 10 for above the 90th percentile for each performance measure and height. When a child misses one measure, the score will be adjusted on the basis of their overall performance on the other tests. These individual scores are then combined to give an overall performance score. maximum score is 80 minimum score is 8.
Rabindar@2007

35

Selection Criteria
The cut off score is: 60 for males 55 for females There will be a few students selected base on their height. The cut off point for height is: 160 cm for male 155 cm for female
However, these will be selected by a selection panel based on their other scores.
