BONUS HANDOUT: Time Notes and Extension Activity

Aims Listening and speaking practice; vocabulary practice (time) Level Lower-Intermediate to Intermediate Time Approximately 25 30 minutes (including extension activity)

NOTES: (1) Have your students sit in pairs. Lead in with the question of what time your students usually wake up on Saturdays. (3 minutes) (2) Distribute the handouts, and ask your students to turn their papers over and listen carefully while you dictate 12 short conversations (below). Rather than just dictating the times as simple numbers (e.g. six forty-five), read them as you may have recently taught your students (e.g. a quarter to seven). Your students should write only the verbs they hear (e.g. wake up) and then immediately turn their papers over to draw each of the dictated times in the pictures (e.g. 6:45).
1. A: What time do you usually wake up on Saturday? B: I usually wake up at 8:30. 2. A: What time do you usually get up on Saturday B: I usually wake up at 8:40. 3. A: What time do you usually have breakfast on Saturday? B: I usually have breakfast at 9:00. 4. A: What time do you go out on Saturday? B: I usually go out at 10:15. 5. A: What time do you usually eat lunch on Saturday? B: I usually eat lunch at 11:45.

Have your students compare their answers with a classmate. Then elicit the answers and write them on the board for your students to check their work. NOTE: These sentences can be dictated in the past tense for higher level students. (10 15 minutes) EXTENSION ACTIVITY Have your students use the verb phrases on the back of their handouts to interview a classmate about their daily habits. (10 minutes)
