1) Car moving along a road, points past points PQR.

PQ = 45m PQ= 2 seconds

QR= 120m QR = 4 seconds

45m 120m

P 2secs Q 4 secs R

Find initial speed and the acceleration of the car?

Use simultaneous equations, 2 unknowns a and u

45 = 2u + 2a
165= 6u+18a

Solve this simultaneously, I used:

10 = 4a

i) u = 20
ii) a = 2.5

2) 2 forces act on a particle

F1= (pi +2pj)

F2= (i-3j)

(a) Find angle between F1 and j axis

Finding this
angle 2

x
1

= Tan x = 2/1
= 90 - 63.4349….

= 26.565… (2)

(b) Given that R parallel with i axis, find p

= 2p+3 = 0
3/2=P

P=1.5 (4)

TOTAL (6)

3) 2 particles P and Q are travelling towards each other. Particles colliding

P: mass= 2m, speed= 2u
Q: mass= m, speed = 3u

If impulse exerted on each particle during collision is 3.5mu, what are final
speeds of P and Q

2U 3U

BEFORE m
2m

AFTER 2m m

For P For Q

I = m (v - u) I = m (v - u)

3.5mu = 2m(v-2u) 3.5mu = m(v - - 3um)

3.5mu = 2mv - 4mu 3.5mu = mv + 3um
7.5mu = 2mv 0.5mu = mv
v = 7.5mu/2m

= 3.75u = 0.5u

(a) A had v = 3.75u (3)

(b) B had v = 0.5u (3)

4) Particle on a slope inclined at arc tan (4/3), Co-efficient of friction 0.5, what is
acceleration down slope

(a) 5.88…. (9)

5) A Particle, weight 15kg is being pulled along by a force, PN at 50 degrees,

coefficient of friction = 0.2 Find P (2SF).

Fr

15g

Resolve horizontally: Fr= Pcos50 Resolve Vertically: R= 147 - Psin50

Given by question: Fr=0.2R

Put 0.2R as Fr in the first equation and

Multiply both sides by 5 to get rid of 0.2:

R= 5Pcos50

Now make the two R’s equal eachother:

5Pcos50 = 147 - Psin50

5Pcos50 + Psin50 = 147

3.979982492P = 147

P= 36.93483585
= 37N (2SF) (9)

6) A Car is pulling along a car using a tow bar, with a driving force 1200N
Trailer: resistance 200N, weight 200kg
Car: resistance 400N, weight 800kg

1200N

200 800

200N

400N

(a) Find acceleration of car

F=ma
1200-400-200 = 1000a
600/1000=a
a=0.6 (3)

(b) Find tension in tow bar

Isolate the trailer.

F=ma
T-200= 200 x 0.6
T= 320N (3)

(c) Find breaking force if thrust in tow bar is 100N and driving force is removed.
Isolate the trailer to find deceleration.
F=ma
200+100= 200a
300/200 = a
a = - 1.5 (deceleration)

Therefore use the whole system again:

F + 200 + 400= 1000 x 1.5

F = 900N (7)

7) A uniform beam, length 2m, weight 20g is suspended by two strings, P and Q.
Such that:

0.7m
0.3m 1.4m 0.3m
Xm

P Q
20g

50g

A gymnast, weight 50g hangs Xm away from point P

a) prove = (588-350x)=PN

TMA(Q): (0.7 x 20g) + (50g x (1.4 – x) =1.4P (3)

b) find equation in terms of x at Q = 364 -488x= QN

TMA(P): (X x 50g) + (0.7 x 20g) = 1.4Q

= (350X + 98) = QN (3)

c) Explanation of what are the maximum and minimum weights at each string?
Where 0<x<1.4

Extreme values for Q

When x=0 Q=98N
When x=1.4 Q=588N
98<Q<588

Extreme values for P

When x=0 Q=588
When x=1.4 Q=98
98<P<588 (3)

d) Find distance of gymnast away from Q given tension at Q=3P

Y+3Y = 686
Y= 171.5 (tension at string P)
TMA(Q)
(50gX) + (0.7 x 20g) = (1.4 x 171.5)
490X = 240.1
X = 0.208…
So distance from Q = 1.4 – 0.208… = 1.19…m (3)

8) A hiker H starts at 100j from point O, he walks with velocity (1.2I +0.9J)

(a) Find speed

Speed = 2.25

1.5 (2)

(b) Find equation for position t hours after

100j + t (1.2I+ 0.9j) (2)

(c) New Hiker K is also walking from O at a velocity (?I +?j)

Prove distance of H from K after t is (?I +?J)

Had to do –H + K and this was equal to the distance they gave you. (4)

(d) Find the position that they meet = where t is 20.

= 100j + 20(1.2i - 0.9j)

(24i + 82j) (5)
