Principal Notes From
Mr. Lauer
Dear Families,
We had a great opening day Tuesday at Lewis. The sight
of so many smiling children and parents is something I
always look forward to as we start the new school year. I
had an opportunity to spend time in every classroom and I
saw happy and hopeful children. I saw teachers and
support staff focused on engaging students and
welcoming them to the new school year. The best part of
my work is to be able to walk into your classrooms and
talk to students about the work they are doing and why it
is important.
I had the opportunity to view parts of President Obama's
address to students in two of our classrooms. It is a
message that should resonate with all of us. Work hard,
do your best, respect your teachers, you have a
responsibility to succeed, never give up... It was delivered
with passion and an understanding that the work that we
do can shape the arc of a student's life. It is important and
valuable work that we have the honor of doing and I felt
that the President hit the mark in helping students
understand how important education can be in shaping

Below are a few Important Reminders:
Medication Authorization Forms
If your child requires medication during the school day,
even if it is self administered, we must have a current file
on record in order for your child to have medication
administered at school. If you need a form, please contract
Tracy in the school office.
School Hours
School begins at 8:40, with dismissal at 3:00. Our lunch
period is now beginning at 11:40. Students having
breakfast at school should arrive at 8:25. If not eating
breakfast at school students should not arrive until after
8:30.
Helmets Required
Students riding bikes and skateboards to school must wear
a helmet.
Registration forms and all other forms need to be
returned to school by this Friday.
Free and Reduced Price Meal
Free and Reduced Price Meal forms need to be submitted
each year. If you believe you qualify to for free and
reduced price meals please return the form included in
your registration packet to school as soon as possible.

Tardies and Leaving Early
Students arriving after 8:45 need to first check in at the
September 9, 2009
office before going to class.
Students leaving early need to
be checked out in the office.
Lewis Eats Out: This Tuesday at
Burgerville on SE 26th
Lewis partners with local restaurants to
offer Lewis Eats Out night, which means
the restaurant will give a percentage of
sales on a selected night to Lewis
Elementary School.  Support Lewis in a fun and community
building way.  Join us for the first Lewis Eats Out of the
school year at Burgerville on 26th and Powell on Tuesday,
September 15th from 5-8 pm.  Burgerville will donate 10%
to Lewis on this night.  In a hurry? Get your meal to go
instead, because it all goes toward Lewis.  Tell your friends
and family!"
"Want to double up on your support for Lewis?  Buy a
Burgerville Scrip card from the office.  You can passively
give money to Lewis by buying the Burgerville Scrip card
AND by coming to Lewis Eats Out.  Thanks for your
support."
Lewis Holiday Bazaar Update
"The Lewis Holiday Bazaar is
now accepting vendors.  
Children, parents, staff and
alumni of Lewis do not need
to be juried in and are
automatically included with
a $10 application fee or by
donating at least 1 hour of time to the
sale.  Applications available at the office.  The
application deadline is September 11th to appear on
the postcard.  For more details see the Lewis Events

Kindergarten PTA Social
September 15, 2009 - 6:00 pm
Families and students in our
kindergarten classrooms are
invited to attend a gathering on
September 15. This is an
opportunity for new families to
meet each other and for parents to
meet our PTA Board members.
Lewis Open House
Tuesday, September 22, 6:00 pm
All parents and students are invited to attend our annual
Open House on September 22. Traditionally many families
come early to enjoy a “bring your own” picnic dinner on
the playground. At 6:00 staff will be introduced and
families will have the opportunity to tour classrooms. Also
at this time families can sign up for fall conferences. We
hope to see everyone at Open House.

Wednesday, September 16 is a late opening.
School will begin at 10:40 am.
