Welcome back to school
A warm welcome back to Sandiway
Primary School after what was, I hope,
a lovely summer holiday for you and
your family. A special welcome to our
new families with children starting in
our school for the first time.
I am delighted with the start that
everyone has made, with many
confident, happy children coming into
school. Thank you to all the parents
for making sure that all the children
look so smart in their school uniforms.
The school website has full details of
the school uniform expectations, if
you like to double-check anything.
Please note that children should not
wear jewellery in school, including
earrings.
School Curriculum
Following the successes of last year,
we will be building on our curriculum
provision this year. We are already
proud of all that we offer the children,
but we want to make this even better.
During the year, we will be
redesigning our curriculum to best
meet the needs of our children and to
embrace the world we live in. I will
give more details of this in the coming
weeks when I explain our priorities for
this year in school.
School Lunches
As I informed you last term, we now
run the school kitchen and are
responsible for the food ordering, the
menus, training and any special
requests. The new school menus are
on the school website for you to
download. We are required to follow
national nutritional standards and our
menus are written to meet these.
However, we do have some scope to
make changes based on feedback. I
will be working with the children and
staff during the year to make sure
that their voice is heard if they like or
dislike something. Please understand,
however, that we cannot cater for
everyone’s personal preferences,
although Donna, or school cook, tries

very hard to! She is very open to
children (and parents) talking to her.
This week, I spoke to the children
about our enjoyment of lunchtimes:
the food, the social experience and
the break from work. I talked through
some of the ‘rules’ I have at home
with my own family, which I am
encouraging our children to follow. I
know that I have your support when I
ask the children to ‘try new food’, ‘eat
your vegetables’, ‘show good table
manners’, ‘use polite words’, ‘help
with tidying up’, etc. School staff,
including myself, regularly sit with the
children to enjoy our lunchtime
experience together and I hope this
will continue to develop over the
year.
On a more serious matter, we are
aware that some children have
allergies and intolerances. All the
menus have been checked for the 14
allergens. I will also put this
information on the school website so
that you can see how this may affect
you. It is very important that if your
child has dietary needs that you
please speak to us. Mrs Tucker is the
best person to start this conversation
with. We will require medical
evidence of allergies/intolerances
which will be kept confidentially in
school to assist the kitchen staff in
making sure your children are safe.
School Account
Please log into School Gateway to
check your account. This system is
used to make sure that school lunch
accounts are in credit – there are a
number of accounts that are not in
credit at the moment. If children’s
accounts are not in credit, children
will never be refused a school meal,
but they will be unable to buy snacks
at morning break. If you have any
concerns regarding payment, please
contact me and we can discuss this
confidentially. Please don’t be
offended by any emails or texts
reminding you to ‘top up your
account’, I know everyone is busy and
this is sometimes forgotten, but we
need to make these reminders.
Clubs
Details about school clubs will shortly
be available; a letter giving
information will be emailed and
signing up will be through the school
website.
The Club (Before and After School
Care)
This is now fully up and running. If you
would like to make any

Meet the Teachers
As we have done in previous years, I
would like to invite you into school
next Thursday to ‘meet your new
teachers’. All parents from Year 1 to
Year 6 (Reception will send a separate
letter regarding their meeting) are
invited to the school hall at 3.30pm
where I will give a short introduction
to the year. I will then invite you to go
to your new classes where teachers
will give further information. The
teachers will repeat this talk so you
can visit more than one teacher that
afternoon.
