Rationale: Whereas: The DFL firmly supports family farmers, as well as implementing state and federal incentives and legislation to promote local foods and sustainable agriculture practices with expanded land access and growing opportunities for local, sustainable community food production, including community gardens, home gardens, and urban farms; Whereas: Demand for locally and sustainably produced food is growing Whereas: Many FSA and Beginning Farmer programs require producers to enroll in Farm Management Programs to participate in these programs; and sustainable food production techniques such as integrated livestock and cropping systems require hands-on and classroom instruction; and Whereas: MNSCU has cut and under-supported Farm Management Programs, as well as cut the innovative Sustainable Food Production diploma program at MSCTC-Fergus Falls, be it resolved: We support a range of post-secondary agricultural education programs in public colleges and universities, including organic practices, sustainable food production, integrated livestock and cropping systems, permaculture, and family-scale farm management.
