his winter the REI Outdoor School wants to help get people out of the house and active in the snowy Sierra. REI Outdoor Programs Sierra Market Manager Jason Flesher said the school has been a part of the Sierra community since 2007. We provide instruction, skills and techniques from introductory classes, intermediate classes to advanced classes in snowshoeing, cross country skiing, mountaineering, paddling, climbing, hiking, cycling, mountain biking, camping, outdoor photography and unique social tours, Flesher said. activities they choose and make sure they have the right equipment for it. We want to be a part of peoples experience throughout their progression within their activity. This year mountaineering is just one of the many activities offered by the REI Outdoor School. Mountaineering is many things, Flesher said. It is climbing, trekking, skill, fortitude, panoramic views and
wilderness experience. The challenge of mountaineering offers you a chance to learn about yourself outside the confines of the modern world and shows you the edge of your limits and allows you to push beyond. In February, the REI Outdoor School offers three progressive mountaineering classes, including Introduction to Mountaineering-Basic Skills and Technique, Advanced Mountaineering-Rope Team Travel and Advanced Mountaineering-Rescue.
Travel and Advanced Mountaineering-Rescue. You can consider hiking to the top of Castle Peak to climbing to the top of Mt. Everest mountaineering, he said. It all comes down to ones abilities, skills and desires to challenge oneself to reach the panoramic views in unique and remote places of the world. So is the sport going to help get you into shape in this new year? Flesher said, without a doubt. Between muscular, cardio, stamina and endurance, when you add altitude and less oxygen with elevation, it compounds the conditioning and physical strength, he said. The key for physical success of reaching the summit is training and conditioning for your climb. Prepare and work towards the goal of the success of reaching the summit because you need to make sure you still have the strength and ability to return. Then 60 percent of energy for reaching the summit is making sure you have the reserves to get down. This is where most accidents take place on the return due to exhaustion and fatigue. Training is key for success. Flesher has been in the field of Outdoor Education and Guiding for more than 30 years. I have been mountaineering since 1995 when I climbed my first big peak in Mexico that was 18,800 feet, but have been rock and ice climbing since 1982, Flesher said. Ive guided on all seven continents, climbed four of the seven summits, guided trips in caves over 1,500 feet below the surface to peaks over 22,800 feet above, and continue to guide annually in Antarctica. Ive also been a mountain rescue specialist and in Wilderness Search and Rescue for nearly 30 years. Flesher has been with REI since 1998. I began instructing with the Outdoor School in the Bay Area five years ago and have been the Sierra Market Manager for the past two years, he said. I oversee the Sierra Market which includes the Outdoor School, local and market community events and grants. The Sierra Market includes five REI stores, and spans from Reno to Sacramento and Stockton. The upcoming concert will be special in that the music is very apropos for a Valentines concert, including having classical guitar with Larry Ferrara and some very romantic songs with tenor Robert Vann. Most of the music on this concert will be fairly short with a great deal of variety. I truly believe that the audience will find this concert a joy to listen to. The Folsom Symphony was founded in 2004 under the direction of Folsom businessmen Bruce Woodbury and Dick Merz, educator and musician Marsha Williams-Miller, and with the contribution and efforts of a collaborative group of devoted local individuals, many of whom remain active with the organization today. The Folsom Symphony is a wonderful family of musicians, board members, volunteers and a truly loyal audience, Neumann said. What a joy to work with all of

he first long-course triathlon in Folsom since 2004 will be held June 8 at Nimbus Flat State Park. For years USA Productions have put on the Folsom International Triathlon and the Folsom Sprint Triathlon in August, but in 2014 the events will be held in June along with a longcourse triathlon which will have participants swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles and run 13.1 miles, which are all halfIronman distances. Were offering three different distances now and it just fosters the growth in the sport, said Ryan Coelho, race director and CEO of USA Productions. Many athletes like to progress in their sport and after doing a sprint triathlon, they want a new challenge of an Olympic
Riders head out on the bike ride during the 2012 Folsom International Triathlon. The annual August event has been moved to June. Along with the sprint distance triathlon, a longcourse triathlon will be held, featuring a 1.2-mile swim, a 56mile bike and a 13.1-mile run.

distance. Now weve added a long-course triathlon. The sprint triathlon features a -mile swim, a 19-mile bike and a 3.1-mile run, while the Olympic distance is a .9 mile swim, a 24.8-mile bike and a 6.2-mile run.
Experienced triathletes, as well as newcomers to the sport, must train their bodies to be able to finish a triathlon, no matter what the distance. EpicTri, formerly the El Dorado Hills Triathlon Club, is in the business of training athletes
and the club has several members who will be competing in events in June. Amanda Aldrich, one of the coaches at EpicTri, said a persons training program is based on their level of fitness. Most people who get into triathlons
are either already proficient in one of the disciplines and are looking to expand their abilities. Others newcomers are inactive and are looking to try something new. If you have someone who is in moderate to good shape, we can train them in 12 weeks and get them to finish with dignity and pride and be happy, Aldrich said. The training varies depending on a persons shape and the distance of the triathlon. A majority of the training, obviously, is running, biking and swimming, as these are the three events the athletes will be doing. The workouts start at the easiest level a person can accomplish and then over time distance is added to build up strength and endurance so athletes can finish the triathlon.

WINE
BY GWEN BOHDAN
FEBRUARY 2014
Royal Norgan and Carla Wisen from Grand Rapids, Mich., enjoy a romantic visit at Skinner Winery in Fairplay.
Our first stop is Cantiga Wineworks, located at 5980 Meyers Lane in Somerset. The Gothic styled architecture, Medievalstyle tapestry wall hangings, and modest lighting woo guests as they enjoy wine specifically paired with particular gourmet foods and ancient music playing softly overhead. Passion for food, wine and music is what you think about when youre having have family and
friends around. said Assistant Winemaker Seth Picker. The Rordens wanted to cater to that. Owners Rich and Christine Rorden are passionate about pairing wine with food. They go into great detail to find the perfect chilled seafood gazpacho recipe to complement their Oakless Chardonnay, and serve authentic Spanish chorizo for guests tasting the Grenache. The Rorden philosophy of winemaking is to use minimal intervention and as little malolactic fermentation as possible. The Cantiga concept comes from Christines background in early music. The young matriarch, who holds a masters
degree in ethnomusicology, plays a variety of instruments, including the Middle Eastern oud one of the oldest stringed instruments and predecessor to the lyre and bouzouki. Even the labels pay homage to the old world of music and wine making with monks and ancient instruments gracing the designs for wines with names such as La Petite Suite, Madrigal, Nocturne, and Troubadour. The second stop is Windwalker Vineyards at 7360 Perry Creek Road. Windwalker has a generous-sized tasting room housed in a cute wooden cottage with plenty of patio area for picking up
any of the tasty treats from the gift shop to go with a bottle of their Lady Series wines. My Lady Series is just a fun series we do just for ladies, said owner Alanna Taff of the three wines in the group. Each of the wines represents a different aspect of a womans character, be it the whimsical Foxy Lady Old Vine Zinfandel, the dark and mysterious Shady Lady Primitivo, or the elegant Bordeaux blend called Lady in Red. Later this month, Windwalker will be releasing Temperamental Lady, which will be close to 100 percent Tempranillo. She also has a story

end together. Or, Folsom residents could get a local hotel room and pretend to be Folsom tourists. When booking the Sweetheart Sip N Stay package at any Folsom hotel, a complimentary bottle of local wine, chocolate truffle and free passes for bike rentals is included, Cheyne said.
Those staying in Folsom for the weekend can check in and enjoy their complimentary bottle of wine while reviewing all of the many recreational options Folsom offers, Cheyne said. Visitors can wake up and enjoy brunch, go shopping or take a bike ride around Lake Natoma. For those looking to add a day of wine tasting to their weekend activi-

The tour will be from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, with transportation included in the total package price of $65. For those who register for the tour, a professional chauffeur will transport visitors to and from their individual Folsom hotel to four-five local wineries in
the El Dorado County wine region. The tour also includes a picnic lunch. After the wine tour, visitors are encouraged to enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in Folsom, Cheyne said. You are either A) Smiling With Confidence or, B) Hiding Your Smile And Potential
T here is no option C
Despite your best efforts to smile with crooked teeth, you may be missing out on the future happiness and success that comes with a confident new smile. If the idea of a confident new smile is appealing to you, but the thought of wearing metal braces has kept you away from your dream smile...there is good news. THE ADVANTAGES ARE CLEAR. Invisalign is the modern and more compassionate approach to straight teeth. A series of removable aligners worn 22 hours a day gradually shift your teeth to their prescribed brilliance. Since they are removable, you can eat whatever you like and brush and floss with ease. Most people will not even know you are getting your bite and teeth corrected. Even better, there are fewer visits to the office and the price is the same as a full set of metal braces. FIND OUT WHY MORE AND MORE PATIENTS ARE CHOOSING INVISALIGN. Call to schedule a consultation and x-rays ($299 value) at no cost to you. Find out if Invisalign is right for you and your family.

WINE: Skinner is fun, festive TRAIN: Groups give support HONEYBEE: Feb. 1 concert
continued from 14 too, Taff explains. She has a huge, huge, huge spot in her heart because the person who did that for us - her name is Colleen - she and her husband passed away in a bad car accident a year ago last March. She was a near and dear friend and she did the label for us. It wasnt quite finished, but we went ahead and printed the label as her last touch on the art. Our final stop showcases one of the best views of the Foothills: Skinner Vineyards and Winery at 8054 Fairplay Road. Its small, cozy tasting room, dark and rustic downstairs cellar, and generous patio with brick fireplace and waterfall is a fabulous place to spend a romantic afternoon. Its a beautiful setting, theres great ambiance, continued from 9 After starting by just working on one discipline a day, training will progress to doing two events a day; for example, following up a 10mile bike ride with a twomile run. You would be looking at three bike rides, two swims and two runs a week, but it varies, Aldrich said. Aldrich said its critical that participants feel physically and mentally comfortable swimming in the open water, the part of the triathlon that brings the most anxiety to most participants. Strength training, whether by lifting weights at the gym, or practicing yoga, Pilates or whatever an athlete is into, is also crucial to preparing for a triathlon, according to Aldrich.
You need to support all youre asking from your body; you need a strong infrastructure, Aldrich said. And recovery days are just as important as the days you work out. As with any training regiment, eating healthy and properly also plays a key role in ones success, especially when attempting to finish a triathlon at the longer distances. Im biased, but I believe plugging into a like-minded group is also important; for support, camaraderie, to share in the training and to get information, Aldrich said. That is huge. For more information on EpicTri, go to EpicTri.com. To sign up for the triathlon, go to usaproductions.org and go to events.
continued from 8 Series at 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 1, at the First United Methodist Church of Loomis located at 6414 Brace Rd in Loomis. The trio will perform classic songs of the 1930s and 1940s, with an emphasis on the swing era. Our goal is to bring different types of music to the community, said
Mion, and the Honeybee Trio is a great start. For many, their renditions of timeless songs in the syle of the Andrews Sisters are a walk down Memory Lane. Tickets are $15 at the door. For tickets, contact Kay Berryman at (916) 652-6570 or email FUMCconcerts5@gmail.com.
A classy label design, like the one for Windwalkers Lady In Red, adds to the romance of a wine tasting visit.
and quite frankly, I think you cant have romance without people, said tasting room manager Brian Peverini. Weve just got a very fun, festive atmosphere and I think that romance is conducive to having fun and enjoying yourself at the same time.
