Renato Segatto It Happened One Night 1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

. It Happened One Night was a movie filmed in 1934 and we discussed the time period it was released. It was turbulent times for America in the Great Depression and the text mentioned that the most successful way at keeping the seats full was just to make better movies that people would want to watch. Also we discussed the effect of Clarke Gable not wearing an undershirt in the movie. Sales went down for undershirts which I thought was interesting to know it had such a profound effect on the audience. We discussed how Clarke Gable was the big time star during the filming of the movie. It was a romantic film that involved a battle of the sexes and Frank Capras film really had an effect on his audience from what we discussed in class.

2) Find a related article and summarize the content. (on the film, director, studio, actor/actress, artistic content, etc.) You can use the library or the internet. We will discuss suitable references in class. Cite the article and copy the URL to your journal entry. You should also mention the title of the article and author directly in the answer. Summarize in your own words the related article but do not plagiarize any content. http://www.rogerebert.com/far-flung-correspondents/looking-back-at-it-happened-one-night The writer, Micheal Oleszczyk writes Looking Back at It Happened One Night and mentions how its the ultimate romantic comedy. Films like this were not as common as it is now which made an impact in the film industry. The film describes the story of Claudette Colbert running away from her tycoon father and crosses paths with Clarke Gables character and they share their conflicts as well as intimate moments. One of the most erotic scenes according to Oleszczyk was after the detectives make a search in their room and they argue with each other in a memorable Hollywood moment, Gable buttons her blouse congratulating her. Scenes like this and also when Ellie raises her skirt for a hitchhiker were new and were barely experimental. The duo showed a different style of a relationship, and to this day is still a measuring stick in the genre of romantic comedy.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the article support or change the way you thought about the film, director, content, etc.? This article agreed with the movie and stayed on the same basis but I didnt know how influential this movie was in the romantic comedy genre. I watched the film without any pre notions and I didnt have much of a thought change after reading the article. Clark Gable shows a likeable character and I can understand why he was so popular during his time. The article mentions how well the cinematography was being both gritty and gauzy. This article supports

the way I thought about the film, I can now understand why every romantic comedy can pay tribute to Frank Capras It Happened One Night with all its innovative advances in the film industry.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of 4 things: the screening, class 3 discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the contributions of the director. After watching this film, its easy to see why it won so many awards as we mentioned in class as well as mentioned in the text with Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress (Foster 127). As the characters started to develop, I began to become more attracted to the film which supports why the film was so popular and successful. This film set the benchmark for romantic comedies with its beautiful cinematography, actors and plot. During class, as well as in the article it was said that undershirt sales went down which was so surprising for myself. Overall I enjoyed the film and would definitely recommend it to others.
