CPR instructor
Christina Olson, a
RN MSN, teaches in
front of Delran
Emergency Squad
members, firefight-
ers and the general
public during a Pet
CPR, First Aid and
Safety class at the
Delran Emergency
Squad building on
March 31. The class
gave those who at-
tended a better han-
dle on administering
CPR to animals if
ever necessary.
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
The Delran Emergency
Squad went to the dogs on
March 31 and April 1 when
members of the animal charity
A Better Tomorrow for the An-
imals hosted a CPR class for
pets.
The class was taught by CPR
instructor Christina Olson, a
RN MSN, and a nursing profes-
sor at the Drexel University
health and sciences depart-
ment.
Olson is an administrator
with Better Tomorrow, and the
idea for the class came from dis-
cussions with Better Tomorrow
and Delran Emergency Squad
member Michelle Keller-Eiler.
Basically, we wanted to have
a family friendly community
event to raise awareness about
how to save your pet in an
emergency situation and also
about the multitude of dog res-
cues and other animal rescues
that are out there, Keller-Eiler
said.
The event was the duos third
attempt at hosting the class, as
the previous attempts were can-
celled due to inclement weather
this winter. Olson said despite
the weather and rescheduling,

Freeholder Director Bruce
Garganio announced that the
Burlington County Board of Cho-
sen Freeholders are seeking vol-
unteers through the Parks De-
partment and Clean Communi-
ties Office to participate in a
county park litter clean up.
Our community has come to-
gether in the past to make this
event a success, and we look for-
ward to seeing everyone this
year, Garganio said. In the first
two cleanups this spring at Pen-
nington and Willingboro Lakes
Parks, 96 volunteers from around
the county donated 300 hours col-
lecting 3,100 pounds of litter plus
22 tires.
For all events, volunteers are
encouraged to bring drinking
water and wear long pants, long
sleeves, long socks and sturdy
close-toed shoes that can get
muddy. Bags and gloves will be
provided. Participants younger
than age 16 must be accompanied
by an adult, and letters document-
ing volunteer community service
will be available to students. In
the case that there were to be se-
vere weather, the event will be
canceled.
The next cleanup is scheduled
for Saturday, April 12 from 8:30
a.m. to noon at Amico Island
Park, Norman Avenue, Delran.
In association with New Jersey
Clean Communities Councils 2nd
annual Clean Water Challenge,
volunteers will help inventory
and collect litter and debris along

The Sun
At the April 1 meeting of the Delran
Township council, the public hearing was
held for the 2014 municipal budget, after
which council voted to adopt.
Business Administrator Jeffrey Hatcher
said the total budget is $15.73 million, with
$10.61 million raised by taxation, and it
contains no budget increases or tax in-
creases from the previous year.
The local purpose tax rate will remain
the same at .756 per $100 of assessed valua-
tion, Hatcher said. Therefore for the av-
erage home assessment of approximately
$209,000, you would pay for the local pur-
pose tax $1,580.04, the same as you would
pay last year for that tax bill.
Hatcher also reminded residents that
the $1,580.04 figure was only the municipal
portion of their tax bill and only repre-
sents 22 percent of a residents total tax
bill. The average tax bill for a resident in-
cluding taxes for the school district, fire
district and county would be $7,076.
There were also no increases in the
sewer budget for the year.
The overall spending is going down,
Hatcher said. The amount were raising
through taxation is going down.
Hatcher attributed the stable budget to
consistent tax collection revenues, con-
trolled spending, managing the surplus
over several years and a one-year reduc-
tion in debt service.
Challenges in the current budget includ-
ed the harsh winter requiring increases to
snow removal payments, committing more
funds to road improvements and a slight
reduction in taxable evaluations as a result
of assessment reductions.
Tax appeals have impacted a number of
municipal governments throughout the
state, Hatcher said. They havent impact-
ed Delran quite as much as other commu-
nities but they have impacted us.
After Hatcher concluded his presenta-
tion, the budget was opened to public com-
ment.
Mayor Ken Paris praised the various
township departments for keeping the
same quality of service in Delran with sta-
ble or reduced budgets.
Weve kept the budget down for six

F
or the next two weeks, police
forces throughout the state will
be looking, long and hard, for
drivers who are distracted. Its part of
the Division of Highway Traffic Safe-
tys Distracted Driving 2014 Statewide
Crackdown.
Sixty police departments received
$5,000 each to pay for increased patrols
and checkpoints for the crackdown,
which began April 1 and runs through
April 21. The campaign coincides with
the national Distracted Driving
Awareness Month.
Its a good start, but the state should
really go further to improve public
safety on our roadways.
In 2012, an estimated 421,000 people
were injured in crashes involving a
distracted driver, which represents a 9
percent increase over the year before,
according to state data. Possibly the
most public case was that of 8-month-
old Angelie Paredes, who was killed
last summer when a distracted bus
driver lost control of the vehicle in
West New York and struck a light pole
that fell onto the babys stroller.
Distracted driving focuses on tex-
ting or talking on the phone while
driving, but it also can include using a
mobile phone for directions, using
MP3 players, eating or putting on
makeup.
The fine for a first offense of dis-
tracted driving in New Jersey is $200,
but its a non-point-carrying offense.
We wonder if $200 and no points is
enough of a deterrent to drivers. Or
maybe campaigns such as this one will
help, in that more drivers will be
pulled over for the offense.
Either way, we believe the state, and
maybe even the federal government,
should step in to increase the penalties
for distracted driving, and make driv-
ing in todays mobile society easier to
navigate.
Can the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration require all new
vehicles to be equipped with Bluetooth
technology, like it is requiring all new
vehicles to have backup cameras by
2018?
While it certainly wouldnt solve the
problem, as the driver would have to
have a Bluetooth-compatible device for
it to work, its something that is be-
coming more standard by the day.
It wouldnt be the solve-all to the
problem of distracted driving, but it
would certainly be an effective start.
in our opinion
UDrive. UText. UPay.
State should go further to crack down on distracted driving, permanently

years now and weve kept it pret-
ty flat, Paris said. Im pretty
happy about that.
Delran Fire Commissioner Jim
Bauer also spoke to give his
monthly report on the activities
of the fire department. He had
two major fire related items to
discuss.
Bauer said on March 31 on
Leon Avenue, there was a
portable toilet that caught fire.
While dealing with the situation,
a resident informed the depart-
ment that someone tried to set
fire to the portable toilet on
Brown Street as well.
The department is continuing
to work with police to find the
perpetrators, and Paris expressed
his disappointment toward who-
ever set the fire.
I want to catch the people who
are actually doing this, Paris
said. Were investing in our com-
munity; were trying to keep Del-
ran a beautiful place to live.
Bauer also spoke of how sever-
al weeks ago on a Sunday morn-
ing, there was a major structure
fire at a residence located on In-
verness and Stoneham drives.
The fire was a kitchen fire,
with most damage contained to
the kitchen and adjacent recre-
ation room. Bauer said the fire
was caused by the resident leav-
ing the home with the stove on as
determined by the status of the
stove switches and pots of food
still located on top of it when in-
vestigated.
You had three in one direction
and one was a 180, Bauer said.
You either had three on and one
off, or one on and three off. The
fire officials are trying to contact
the maker of that stove to deter-
mine which it was, but obviously
the stove was left on.
Bauer said the intensity of the
heat was probably near 1500 de-
grees and so great as to blister
firefighters helmets and burn the
gear off one firefighters shoul-
der, resulting in second-degree
burns of both ears and first-de-
gree burns of the shoulder. The
injured firefighter was taken to
the hospital and released.
In other news:
The township sewer bills for
2014 are out to residents who have
until April 30 to pay without in-
curring fines or penalties.
Branch and leaf pickup has
begun for the year. Leaf collec-
tion extends until April 30, and
branch pickup will extend until
Oct. 1. Branches should be no
longer than eight feet and four
inches in diameter.

for the 2014 Summer Intensive from June 23-July 25
Training in Ballet is fun when taught by experienced,
energetic and caring teachers. Your child will gain
poise, confidence and a lifelong love of the arts by
training in a caring and non-competitive
environment. In addition, your child will receive the
necessary technical instruction to guarantee his or
her transition to the next level in dance. It would be
our privilege to answer any questions about your
child's dance goals.
Please call 856-768-9503 to arrange a time to speak
with David Gallagher, Artistic Director of Ballet NJ,
or to request a Summer Intensive 2014 brochure.

10 THE DELRAN SUN APRIL 915, 2014
the community responded well to
the idea of the class.
Keller-Eiler said the class was
for everyone, no matter what level
of CPR training they previously
had.
Being a member of the squad,
we renew our human CPR every
year, but weve never been taught
necessarily pet CPR, Keller-Eiler
said. I thought what a great idea
for squad members, for firefight-
ers and just for the lay person to
know what to do in an emergency
situation.
Olson trains CPR instructors,
and said that although shes pre-
viously taught about animal CPR
in her college classes, the class at
the emergency squad building
was the first public-charity type
of class she had ever taught.
This is the first time, but we
have requests from some other or-
ganizations that have asked if I
would go there and do it with
them as well, which Im excited
about, Olson said.
All the nominal fees raised
from the class are also going to
the rescue of animals that have
been abandoned and abused.
Weve had a couple of dona-
tions in addition to that, so thats
going to really help, Olson said.
There are a lot of animals still in
the shelter, and were trying to
keep them from being eutha-
nized, so we also as a group get to-
gether and we try to recruit peo-
ple to be foster homes for the ani-
mals and then we go out and we
do home studies and then we line
them up.
Once the attendees arrived,
Olson got the class underway. She
taught Pet CPR, along with gener-
al first aid and safety informa-
tion.
She even had a practice-dog-
mannequin to better show those
in attendance how to perform
CPR on a dog, and later the class
also played games such as Jeop-
ardy, charades and Pictionary to
see how much of the information
they retained.
It gets them involved and gets
them to the forefront, Olson said.
One attendee at the event was
Barbra Moos, who works as a
nurse. She said the night was a
great event for the community
and people looking to learn.
I saw it on Facebook and I said
I have to do this, Moos said. I
have pets and animals and if I
have to help them I will. And I can
pass it along to someone else, too,
perhaps.
In addition to the Pet CPR
class, Better Tomorrow also has
other upcoming fundraisers such
as a bake sale, flea market and
spy-ghetti dinner.
Keller-Eiler said anybody can
help animals anywhere and any-
time, even if they dont have
money to give.
It takes a village and every-
body can help, Keller-Eiler said.
Even if you dont have monetary
donations, you can donate time.
There are plenty of organizations
that will gladly take volunteers
and any amount of time and ef-
fort you can give.
Olson said those looking to do-
nate money or look into setting
up their own human or Pet CPR
class can search for the charity on
Facebook.
A Better Tomorrow for Ani-
mals is on Facebook and they can
contact us on there, Olson said.
If they want to do human or Pet
CPR, some of the money will go
toward the animal rescue.
