Analysis and Interpretation:

The obtained specific gravity indicates that the soil used might be silt soil as noted from the table 3-1.
Even if the soil used is an organic type, it became silt for the soil has been twice sieved. The
requirements of temperature and humidity were taken into account in the lab at 20 C, as well as the
distilled water at 29 C. The main source of error in the test was the presence of air in the soil or in
water. Although we placed the specimen in the stove, the air voids can never be zero in a small time
interval such that we used in the test. The use of distilled water is used to reduce the entrapped air, and
decreased errors than using tap water which will increase errors.
Conclusion:
After performing the experiment, we have concluded the results that the specific gravity of silt soil is
2.72. We know that smaller the particle size, higher the value of specific gravity and vice versa. As silt
soils vary from 2.65 to 2.7, it means that the experiment is performed accurately. Thus, the used of
pycnometer is an effective method in determining the specific gravity of soil as accurately as possible. In
soil mechanics, the specific gravity of soil solids is an important parameter and is a factor in many
equations involving weight-volume relationships such as void ratio and degree of saturation.
