How the 4 Noble Truths of Buddhism can help
Christians come into divine union with God.
Buddhists attempt to completely eliminate
emotional suffering by changing all aspects of their
minds. Christians attempt to come into divine
union by putting on the mind of Christ as St. Paul
put it. This requires changing our thinking,
willfulness, emotions and behaviors to those of
Jesus a complete spiritual transformation. The
practices and insights of Buddhism can greatly
help Christians in this radical transformation.

Traversing more than 1450 miles upcountry
Mexican freight trains routinely are boarded by
migrants hoping to reach America. Among the
thousands who ride the trains many are children
traveling alone. They come from all over Mexico
and Central America risking everything for the
chance of a better life. Which Way Home follows
some of these unaccompanied children as they
make the long and treacherous voyage to the U.S.
border. Some like Olga and Freddy venture out in
search of distant relatives. Others like Kevin hope
to find work to support their families at home.
Often traveling for months or even years at a time
these courageous and determined children each
have stories of hope and resilience disappointment
and sorrow. Chronicling the harrowing journey of
thousands of migrant children Which Way Home
illuminates a powerfully human side of immigration.

About Caesarea Philippi (featured on front cover and the venue for todays Gospel)
The city had been known as Banias, an Arabic pronunciation of Panias (there is no p in Arabic). This name honoured
the Greek god Pan a half-man, half-goat deity often depicted playing a flute who was worshipped here. When
Jesus passed this way, the area was ruled by Herod the Greats son Philip, who had renamed the city Caesarea. To
distinguish it from the coastal Caesarea Maritima, it became known as Caesarea Philippi. The city had been built near
the Banias spring, which gushes from a massive rock face and flows into one of the streams that form the Jordan River.
Here the cult of Pan flourished. East of a large cave are the remains of shrines to Pan and inscriptions, from the 2nd
century, bearing his name. Since Jesus liked to use local imagery for his metaphors and parables, it is easy to visualise
him standing by the steep cliff of the Banias spring and telling Peter that he would become this rock.

Faith that Saves
This Sundays Gospel seems to be a turning
point for the apostles and for their faith.
That is strange, you might reply, since the
amount of space that Matthew allots to this
so-called turning point is very small.
How could it be so important?
Because it is the first big test Jesus has given
them about who he really is. He wants to know how
much their faith has developed by this time, at least
as it is related in Matthews Gospel.*
So let us ask about faith.
Jesus and the disciples were in the area of Caesarea
Philippi. The disciples had come back from their
mission of preaching in villages. He asked them
casually who people think he is. They laugh boyishly
and give the answers they have heard. They
obviously regard such guesses as absurd.
Believe it or not, some think you are John the Baptist
returned from the dead!
The ones I talked to said you were the prophet
Elijah! It was hilarious!
A few of them said you are Jeremiah or one of the
other prophets! They just dont know what to make
of you. laughter all around.
Quick as a wink, before they can get their feet on the
ground, Jesus asks, And what about you? Who do
you say I am?
oooops.
Eyes wander, laughter becomes a cough, feet scuff.
Without warning they are facing the most intimate
and serious question they have ever been asked. Not
even they themselves know what they will answer.
Faces turn red.
Peter walks on water again, figuratively, and
stammers out an answer, you you are the
Spirituality of the Readings
You are the Christ. The Son of the living God.
Silence.
Then nods. Relief all around.
Simon, how great is your faith! Jesus bursts out.
Whatever you open with this faith on earth will be
open in heaven. Whatever you shut on
earth with this faith will go shut not only
here but in heaven.
Wow. This is quite a reaction to Peters
abrupt statement. Such a huge reward for
such a simple statement!
But how simple is it? Doesnt it contain the
essence of all Christian faith?
To say it frankly, God in Jesus desires a mutual love-
relationship with us, one in which people open up
their hearts to him even as he does his to them.
The name of this openness to Gods love on our part
is faith.
Besides being a charismatic leader, teacher, and
prophet, Jesus was the very reality of Gods initiating
love, present in the world, ready to share itself as
soon as anyone would receive him.
Maybe you remember the times when he said to the
people he healed, your faith has healed you. (see,
for example, Mt 9:22, Mk 5:34, 10:52, lk 7:50). This
always seemed like an errorIt was Jesus, not their
faith, that cured them. Now you can see what these
mean. All those whom Jesus cured had opened
themselves enough to have at least the beginning of a
true relationship with him. Healing was at last able to
take root because Jesus cures were never just a matter
of him acting on his own, like a mechanic replacing
spark plugs, but of Gods personal love (Jesus) being
received into their hearts and souls.
It is certainly a turning point.
______________
*Matthew, Mark, and luke have structured it this way. In
Johns Gospel the disciples already recognize Jesus as messiah
as soon as they first meet him [John 1:40-50]. (Messiah, by
the way, is a word that means Christ.)
