Public transport
Victorians have been cheated out of a decent public
transport system for decades. The state’s shambolic
public transport network is the predictable result of
Labor’s continuation of the former Liberal
government’s destruction of the public sector.
The latest disgrace is the $1.3 billion Myki ticketing
system — a criminal waste of our money, which could
have been spent on urgently needed upgrades
and extensions.
The Socialist Alliance says:
Make public transport free.
Upgrade and extend the train and bus
network including to areas currently not
serviced.
Fully staff all train stations from the first
to last service.
Take public transport back into public
ownership and operation.
Increase service frequency and
introduce 24-hour running.
Lay dual tracks from Laverton to
Newport, including dual tracking at
Westona, Altona and Seaholme
stations, along Railway Parade and
back to the main Werribee line.
Climate change, water & job
creation
Despite all the scientific evidence, Labor and Liberal
refuse to take urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. The global warming threat means all
governments must work towards zero carbon emissions
— rising sea levels will pose a real threat to Bayside
suburbs. We advocate an urgent shift to 100%
renewable energy based on a massive green job
creation program.
Labor also has failed to properly address the water
crisis. The $3 billion plus desalination plant and the
north-south pipeline will create new environmental
disasters, will massively increase utility bills and will do
nothing to reduce water use, especially by industry.
The Socialist Alliance says:
Implement a massive switch to large-
scale water recycling and stormwater
harvesting.
Facilitate bulk schemes for solar-
powered hot water systems, solar
panels and rainwater tanks to be
installed on homes.
Provide green power alternatives such
as solar, wind and geothermal to
replace coal-fired power stations.
Provide space for community gardens.
Stop new housing developments in
Green Wedge areas.
Launch a massive program to create
local industries to make renewable
energy equipment and trains and buses,
creating tens of thousands of local jobs
in the western suburbs.
Social services
While Brumby wines and dines those with enough
money to buy his ear, Victoria’s public services are in
crisis. Forty thousand Victorians await public housing,
but our premier prioritises spending over $300 million
on tarting up the Melbourne tennis centre!
The ALP’s love affair with privatisation has given huge
subsidies to big business through Public Private
Partnerships (PPPs). As Age economics commentator,
Kenneth Davidson points out, PPPs always end up
costing more than publicly funded projects.
The Socialist Alliance says:
Take electricity, gas and water back into
public ownership and control.
Properly funded hospitals, schools,
aged care facilities, childcare and
community centres.
Massively boost funding to public and
cooperative housing.
Phase out of poker machines.
Defend
workers’
rights

No state government use of federal
anti-union laws against Victorian
workers.
No weakening of Workcover or
occupational health and safety laws.
