According to the DNR, despite their strong resemblance

to the piranha in their early years, the fish are known to be
herbivores.
But that may not matter to a swimmer who comes across
the fish, which can get up to 30 inches in the wild and have
almost human-like teeth.
And the fact that the fish probably won’t threaten hu-

River’s ecosystem if it were to take hold according to Satilla
Riverkeeper Executive Director Bill Miller. Miller said he had
not yet heard of the fish being found in the river.
Invasive species can alter or even destroy an ecosystem
if they overeat and disrupt the existing food-chain, he said.
But according to DNR Region Seven Fisheries Manage-
ment Representative Tim Barrett, the fish will have to work
fast to have any significant effect before winter sets in.
Barrett said that typically, the fish rarely survive the lo-
cal winters and die off before reproducing which may be the
saving grace for the Satilla.
According to the DNR, the Pacu fish is just the latest in a
slew of invasive species that threaten to do that if the fish can

alligators that a few lucky SAT-106195-092210-2x6-BE.indd 1 9/20/10 11:58:25 AM
tourists would spot during
the tour, Berryhill covered a
wide range of topics.
He also addressed what
may have been on the minds
of many at the park as well,
explaining that despite
some close calls, no person
had ever been caught by an
alligator during his time as a
swamp guide.
However, he did caution
the crowd to be mindful of
the creatures when around
water.
“In Georgia, there are
two types of water,” he said.
“Water with gators in it, and
water that will have gators
in it.”
Perhaps the park’s most
famous resident — the “ga-
tor” — can take as little as a
half second to attack when
in the water. That’s a full
quarter second less than the
average person would need
to react, Berryhill said.
Finally, the group
took the train deep into the
swamp. With flashlights in
hand and aided by a bright
moon, the group caught
rare glimpses of the park’s
nightlife which were as
curious about the people as
the people were about the
animals.
At one point on the tour,
the train operator got out
to “call” some gators out of
one of the park’s many lakes
to help give the tour-goers a
glimpse of the prehistoric
animal.
Overall, the park has
seen a significant recovery
since the fires of 2007 accord-
ing to Berryhill, with vegeta-
tion already filling in many
of the burned areas. But
during the tour, the husks
of some dead trees and burn
marks could still be visible.
According to the sea-
soned tour guide, the fires
are a necessary part of the
swamp’s life cycle along with
flooding. However, fires of
that magnitude only occur
every half century he said.
The first moonlit tour
went off without a hitch and
pulled in a great crowd ac-
cording to management.
According to patron
Cori Crews, their tour guide
had a lot to do with that.
“I always like Mr. Ber-
ryhill’s tours,” said Crews.
“They’re great. He’s very
informative and interesting.”
