SCIENCE FORM 1 SET 3

STUDENT MANUAL
Learning Area : The Air Around Us
Learning Objective : Understanding that oxygen is needed for combustion
Element 1 : Construct: C10, C11
Instructions:
1. Carry out activity and record observation with results.
2. Write a task report
Activity Report Format:
1. Title : Oxygen and Combustion
2. Aim : To study the effect of size of container on the length of time a candle burns
3. Variables: (C10 a,b)
4. Hypothesis: State relationship between the size of container and the length of
time candle burns (C11 a,b)
5. Apparatus/ Material :
6. Procedure : (C10 c)
7. Observation and results: – communication (diagrams of activity)
8. Discussion and analysis – answer the questions given.
• a) In which container does the candle burn for the
(i) longest time?.................................
(ii) shortest time? …………………….
• b) Give a reason for your observation.
• c) What gas is needed for combustion?

• d) Arrange in correct sequence the length of time candle burns

in descending order .

The size of a container affects the length of time a candle
burns
1.0 Aim: To investigate the size of the container affects the length of time a
candle burns.

2.0 Variables:

a) Kept constant variable : The size of candle. √

b) Manipulated variable : The size of container. √

c) Responding variable : The length of time taken for a candle burns √

E1C10(a,b)

3.0 Hypothesis : The bigger the size of beaker the longer the time taken for a
candle to burn.
√ E1C11(a,b)

Beaker C

Plasticine

Candle P Candle Q Candle R

Procedure:

1. Candles P,Q dan R were fixed on the table using plasticine.

2. The three candles were lighted
3. Each beaker was inverted over a burning candle of the same type and
size at the same time. E1C10 ( c )
4. The length of time of each candle burns were observed and recorded.
5.0 Observation:

Beaker C Beaker B Beaker A

Candle burns for a short Candle burns for a long Candle burns for a longer
while period period

6.0 Analysis:

a) The candle burns for the:

(i) longest time in beaker A
(ii) shortest time in beaker C

b) The largest beaker has the most amount of air

c) Air contains oxygen. Oxygen is needed for combustion
Sequence of length of time candle burns in descending order:
d) Candle P candle Q candle R
e) Time taken for candle to burn is affected by the size of beaker

Conclusion : The bigger the size of the container the longer the time taken for a
candle to burn/ A large container allows a candle to burn longer in it
than a small container
