Our Host Country: Saudi Arabia

At the dawn ofthe new millennium, Saudi Arabia has brought the best ofthe modem day world to its people while still maintaining its valued historical and religious traditions. A drive through Riyadh, where skyscrapers tower above well preserved historic sites, highlights these unique contrasts. As guests in this country, we have the opportunity to experience a culture that is different from our own in many ways. Just think of the trips to the desert, visits to the soules, and all the wonderful new foods we have tasted here. Whether we venture a short distance from Riyadh or take a longer trip to another part of Saudi Arabia, there is always something new and interesting to see. And memories of the people we have met here will remain in our hearts forever.

COUNTDOWN TO THE

"Where did you get the cute dog frat?" Mauriceona Brown asks Laura Hartikainen.

l
Our story begins two winters ago, when we all left AIS-R for winter break. When we returned, it was 1999 - and the countdown began. All over the world the big buzz has been Y2K and its impending arriva1. How would we celebrate, and where would we be when the clocks rang in the new millenium? Would we dare to fly or ride in an elevator, or would we stock up on canned food and withdraw all our savings from the bank? Exactly how would the arrival of the year 2000 affect us? At AIS-R, most of us were too busy to give it much thought. Just take a look at all that was happening at school - Crazy Hat Day, the Annual Charity Walkathon, and activity days at every grade level took us from the chill of winter into spring.

WAS BUSY, BUSY, BUSY...

During March and April, we were busy as ever. The kindergarteners enjoyed a visit from the Spring Bunny. NJHS held a "Dancin' for Donuts" contest that stirred things up one afternoon and even got some teachers boogeying. The Elementary School held its All School Sing-A-Long. In mid April, Earth Week arrived and the sixth grade held its Endangered Species Awareness Day. Earth Day T-shirts were sold and worn. At the same time the whole school pitched in to help the Kosovo refugees - what a tremendous effort by the AIS-Rcommunity! Then Wellness Week got us all moving and reminded us how important fitness and good nutrition are, and also how much fun they can be 1 That same week, the Junior High held its Clash Day/Spirit Rally.

A Snapshot of Dr. Davis

by: Moustafa Mourad
Dr. John C. Davis, the school superintendent, leaves AIS-R this year after having been our leader, colleague and friend for seven years. He has set and accomplished so many goals for the benefit of the school and touched all our lives in some special way. How many times have we said hello to him each morning as we entered the campus, or waved good-bye each afternoon on our way home? He has seen the AIS-R community through enrollment fluctuations, security crises, and most recently, the long-awaited opening of our high school. Because of his remarkable success and achievements, this section of the 1999/ 2000 yearbook is dedicated to him. Dr. Davis brought to our school a long and outstanding career in education. He had served as a teacher, principal and superintendent in public and intemational schools before he arri ved at AIS- R in 1993. This summer he will leave Saudi Arabia. He plans to spend time in Massachusetts and Denmark, home of his wife, Mrs. Ann Davis. However he will not forget the students he greeted each and every day at the bus stop, or the lifelong friendships he made here. Most of all, he will not forget how unique our school is. Compared to other schools where he has worked, Dr. Davis says AIS-R is the best. He was impressed by the serious attitude AIS-R students have about their studies. He was also pleased to find that the parents are just as determined and ambitious as the
wearing his hal and seeing students off to their buses has become a each afternoon.

students, if not morel Dr. Davis has shared many experiences with the AIS-R community, But his most memorable and challenging year was 1995-96, when terrorist bombings killed and threatened Americans living here. Safety became a major concern and new security plans had to be implemented immediately. The school experienced a sharp drop in enrollment as many students left the country. Another challenge has been the opening of the High School. Following much planning and preparation to make room for new grades, including extensive renovations to school buildings, AIS-R saw its first IO" grade students return this year instead of leaving the country for boarding schools. Although Dr. Davis has contributed much to our school, he says AIS-R has done much more for him. For example, it introduced him to the culture of Saudi Arabia and allowed him to experience and appreciate this part of the world. When asked what he will miss most about Saudi Arabia, he replied, "the people, the students, the lifelong friendships, and the excitement of a different culture." Leader, colleague and friend, he leaves us with this thought: "The value of education can never be overestimated, and everybody can contribute to the improvement of the world in someway." Good luck in your new endeavors, Dr. and Mrs. Davis. We will miss you.

AIS-R High School Opens

Not only was the millennium year noteworthy, it was an historic year at AIS-R for other reasons as well. A major event was the opening of our high school last August. Tenth grade students who otherwise would have headed for boarding schools around the world remained in Kingdom with their family and friends. A new covered area was built as a gathering place for breaks and lunches. With new teachers hired and a principal already in place, the high school quickly became a separate entity while also remaining very much a part of our school community. Congratulations to all those whose efforts made our new high school such a success!

Middle School and High School Art

Some people say art is a reflection of the world in which we live. We paint, draw, sketch and mold according to what we see all around us, AIS-R students demonstrate a wealth of talent each year at Day with the Arts, where projects students worked on all year long are proudly displayed for parents and the rest of the school community. Judging from the students' work, it is indeed a beautiful world we live in.

Going Hi Tech
Are we ready for the new millennium?
Computer technology and the internet are probably the most defining factors of the new millennium. They have changed all of our lives, both at home and at school. In the spring of 1999 the internet came to Saudi Arabia and AIS-R, bringing our classrooms in touch with the global community. AIS-R's goal has been to have a computer in every classroom, and that goal was fulfilled this year as many classrooms in the middle and high schools received computers.

Working with the theme of self portraits, eighth grade students assembled their linoleum prints to create harmonious compositions. Each student had to find a solution to the problem of formal unity. In order to bring separate images together, students used compositional devices such as repetition, rhythm, and symmetrical and radial balance. Some students chose mainly black and white images; others worked with colored prints and oil pastels.
