Order of Business for SMU Student Senate

February 16th, 2010

Call to Order

Speaker’s Podium
• C'Koh Andrew- I have been with the firm since 2006. I did the internship
program. What we do is offer an internship program during the summer.
Instead of having a task oriented internship, we let you do exactly what I do
every day. If you are interested sign up on the sheet that is going around.
Essentially it is meeting clientele and working on your own. I have my own
staff. I get to do things my own way. I have some of the best widely regarded
risk options as well. There is no base salary. There are some bonuses, but it
is success oriented.
• Lisa Dickerson- We are here to donate our check to Heart Beats for Haiti. We
raised $3,500 dollars!
• Kyle Hobratschk- I am a co-chair of the Student Art Association. We do things
a classroom cannot offer. Galleries and visiting artists are some of the things
we offer. We have also grown significantly in the past year. We have the
opportunity to bring someone from New York City to us. She is a video artist
who focuses on the negative impacts of advertising through pop culture. She
is a model and a reference for us to use as we trasition in the real world.
When we do this, the artist comes for two days, and we adverstise it pretty
thoroughly. Afterwards we go to dinner, and that is when we really find out
more about the artist. The second day is really important because she
critiques our work. She is a great connection for the art school.
o Prentice- and you would like to increase your funding by $1,100? Yes
• Brad Ray- I want to give you the student side of the intramural refereeing. I
know the money being asked for seems like a large amount, but you have to
think about the students it affects. It affects 1/3 of the campus. It is such a
huge part of college culture as a whole. I made so many friends through this
that I would not have otherwise done. I ask you to pass the request in full.
You aren’t going to have refs ref for free.
• April Zinober- I am president for Students for a Better Society. This program
is inspiring. So many students requested it so we brought it back this year. I
wanted to let you know that it was going on. It is next Monday at 8PM in the
theater. I encourage you to come see the speaker.
o Essaw- Is it anyone related to Rachel Scott coming to speak?
o It is five speakers that have been trained on what happened with
Columbine. They are very good.
o Cain- you said it was 8PM? And it is two hours?
o Yes
• Judith Banes: I want to compliment the senate. I have been here asking for
money for longer than you have been alive. I am very familiar with the
process. All of the students pay fees and it is your decision on what gets
funded, which I think is great because you all know how the money should be
spent. There is one time we asked for money that was a mistake. It was the
baseball team. One of the questions was why do you pay to train officials to
refs? Officials are not drawn to training. If you do not pay them, they will not
get the training. Another question was, is Dedman double dipping? The
Dedman money goes to maintenance and utilities. None of it goes to the
intramural or sports clubs programs.
o Prentice: Have you thought of a way of preventing this from
happening next year?
o That is a good question, but how do you cut one team and not the
other?
o Samsone: Why is this not handled by the school instead of Senate?
o I cannot answer that, but I think it is better because you all know
whether or not a program is sucky.
o Kobler- Is there a difference in quality when the refs were not paid?
o The officials did not have proper attire. We even had a no shoe guy.
How does that command respect? I feel that I have seen a real
evolution for the better with paid officials.
o Mackingtee- If you knew funding was going to get cut, why did you let
it go this far?
o It is hard to project. When the budget was projected, we counted on
role over. That ended up not being the case. We had a hard time
saying “no you cannot play, it is already full.” We have had retention
committees saying why are people leaving, then we asked why are
they staying? First year students answered with the Dedman Center
and Intramurals in the top 4. It is the nature of what we do.
o Reyes- would it be viable to charge students a small increase in fees?
o It may be too late this year. I do not know if that would work because
we do it by teams. We are looking at different ways to do it.
o Sizemore- If training was required, why can we not pay for training?
o I would really be very surprised if we got the number or the quality if
we asked then to volunteer.
o
• Jack Harper- We did not know we would be getting that $5,000 cut. I could
have very easily asked for $12,000. Where we are sitting right now, we may
be asking for money from other sources even with the $10,000. I made a
great thesis on that with lots of colorful graphs
o Linn- What improvement would it make if we have $2,500 more.
o If we have more refs then we can get better refs. There are so many
people that miss training that we have to turn down. Hopefully all of
you who have participated have seen the improvement. We hope that
the improvements do happen
o Mackingtee- Have you thought about cutting the paid training?
o It is hard to get the people who are qualified to show up. It is an
incentive for them to learn our rules.
o Kearney- Correct me if I am wrong, but you do not need the money
until the end of the year?
o I have to have the money by the time we close, but if I have the money
now I know how many cuts I need to make.
o Brown- What is the retention rate for trained refs?
o From sport to sport it is minimal. Each training is sport specific. But
eventhough I do not know a lot about soccer, I can ref the game
because I know the rules, so we encourage people to ref more than
one sport.
o Spano- I was wondering how you feel about incoming freshmen getting
charged an additional $10,000?
o Where does the other $50,000 come from then? I am here asking for
that but we need so much more than $10,000.
o Spano- Where do you have that funding from now?
o Senate
o Kobler- how many major incidents have occurred from alcohol at an
event?
o None
o Ervin- is there a rule against outside sponsorship?
o (yielded to Judith) I know A&M put signs over their rec center. I think
that is trashy. I do not want to sell our students. We do things like
wing parties at Plucker’s.
o Derisavisfard- You are the employer, can’t you tell them what sports
they have to do?
o How would I keep them from quitting?
o Derisavisfard- Don’t you think that training makes them confident?
o Some people will be weak at some sports, and they will not ref sports
they are not comfortable with and they will not have fun.
• Chris Coleman- As far as funding, realize that the money goes right back to
students who are paying the fees to start off with. If I go to a restaurant to
work, they will train me along the way, paying me.
o Torres- is there anyway that you guys could recruit the work-study
students?
o If you are playing would you want to see a great official turned away if
it would improve your experience?
o Kearney- Is it the training for the rest of the semester that you need
money for?
o We only have one more training session for officials. We are sitting
$12,000 behind what we were last year?
o Kearney- So most of the funds will not be going to training?
o The increase is because of the increase in staff and participation.
• Joe Esau- The last thing that students want is to have bad officials that are
untrained. I do not see why everyone is so hesitant. It seems like a no
brainer here. They are under right now. How are they going to pay for
softball?
• Carr- What is the average entry fee?
• $50. Most of that goes toward maintenance fees, not the officials
• Carr- how many members are on each team?
• You can have up to 20 people per team.
• Kobler- how is that compared to other colleges?
• It is very comparable
• Powell- Are you employed by Dedman intramural?
• Yes
• Would you benefit form this passing?
• Yes
• Carr: Other universities do individual fees instead of team fees?
• (Harper) to my knowledge, I do not think anyone does that. Right now we are
having problems just getting them to get shin guards, let alone pay
individually.

o Spano- I think we should fund this in full because it is an awesome
event, and she is one of the most important women in video art.
o NBLSA: $1,400 (8-3-1)
o Office of the Chaplain & Religious Life: $3,610.00 (10-0-2)
o Victory Campus Ministry: $1,700.00 (9-2-1)
o Intramurals: $7,500 (11-0-1)
 Kobler: I feel that we have to fund this in full. We cannot hold
the fact that the university is not funding this against the
students. Intramurals is such a big part of the university. It is
the only healthy alternative that is healthy alternative on our
campus. We give tons of money to organizations that do not
bring in many students at all. If we cut this budget it would be
like the US cutting the defense budget
 Mace: I agree, this is a great thing for students, but this is
something we are going to see again. I am in support of
funding this in full, but that will be a fourth of our funding this
semester. It seems like it might be time for them to come up
with alternatives. The burden cannot be solely on us. We
cannot make this a pertinent factor.
 Derisavisfard- I played intramurals last year and I cannot tell
you how many times that people would not show up for games
and
 Prentice- Funding $7,500 is the way to go right now. We
cannot give 10K away right now. We have relay, Model UN,
these are great things. I think there are a lot of good things.
We cannot give half of our budget away.
 Mackingtee- I wish we could fund you in full, I do not want to be
a villain. But 1/3 means that there are 2/3 of students are not
on intramurals.
 Esau- do not fund this because we do not have enough money.
Make your decision based on whether or not this is the right
thing to fund otherwise all of our organizations will suffer. Take
into consideration the quality of the program.
 McAngus- I think we need to be careful of that last statement.
We have not been fiscally conservative all year so we should
probably fund it, but I do not think it is right. They do not have
the time to change the entire policy atthis point. That being
said, I think they need to seek alternative funding.
 Cain- even though 1/3 is not a majority, it is definitely one of
the largest activities on campus, we have received tons of
money.
 Carr- With the current situation, they said they needed it by the
end of the year. Just for the members of the finance
committee, next time they should have tighter rules. Supply
and demand here. There needs to be rules and regulations to
keep this from happening. I do not think we should fund
$10,000, we should do $7,500.
 Huseman- I do not understand why we cannot listen to the
finance committee. If in two months, we do not have the
money, we will be letting everyone else down. We can fund
other organizations in part or we can fund other organizations in
whole. I do not think it is fair to keep this money from other
organizations.
 Kearney: I do not think that any one of us wants to not fund
them, but if we can’t do it, then we should not do it. Also, it
sounds like they have already spent the money which I know is
against rules to fund debt so I do not know how that works.
 Badarak- today is a time to think about your constituents and I
think they need it.
