What is Communication
Network?
Organizations are often described in the way they dictate who may or may not
communicate with whom. The organizational structure of a workplace is the formally
prescribed pattern of inter-relationships existing between its various units in networks.
Types of
Communication Network
Single or Chain network
One person communicates with only one person.
Wheel network
The communication pattern under which the subordinates can communicate with and
through one manager, All the workers receive instructions and guidance from one person.
Circular network
The message moves in circle, each person can communicate with his two neighborhood
colleagues only..

Upward Communication:
1.Upward communication refers to flow of information from lower levels to upper levels within
an organization .

3.Upward Communication comprises of Information, request, reports, proposals, and
feedback (suggestion/recommendations) .

5.For E.g. When a marketing manager submits the results of a recently conducted survey to
the vice president, marketing, he/she is using the upward channel to communicate.

Downward Communication:
1.Downwards communication refers to the flow of information from the superiors to
subordinates.
3.For E.g. A sales manager, after going through the market surveys, may tell the members of
his /her sales force what products they should be promoting.

Horizontal Communication:
1.In horizontal communication messages flow side ways in the organizational chart.

3.When communication takes place among the members of the same work group, among
members of work groups at the same level, among managers at same level, or among
any laterally equivalent personnel, we describe it as lateral or horizontal communication.

5.For E.g. Vice president, marketing, has to coordinate his/her efforts with people in other
departments while launching an advertising campaign for a new product. This
necessitates the coordination of information with experts from manufacturing and
production as well as those from research & development .
