Construction

1. On the EDIT Menu, select PREFERENCES. Click on the UNITS tab. For Distance, select
cm for the Units and tenths for the Precision. For Angle, select degrees for the Units and
units for the Precision. Click OK.

2. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select SEGMENT. Click, drag and release the mouse to draw
a straight line. Click on one end, drag and release to form an L shape. Click on the last
point, drag and release to form a U shape. Click on the last point, drag and release the
mouse on the first point to form a closed quadrilateral.

3. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click the mouse on a blank part of the
worksheet. Click the mouse on each side of the quadrilateral in turn. On the MEASURE
menu, select LENGTH. The length value for each side will appear, with labels (for
example : mAB = 4.35 cm). Click and drag each length measurement next to the side
measured.

4. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click the mouse on each of the three
points that form the angle to be measured, ensuring that the angle vertex is the SECOND
point selected. On the MEASURE menu, select ANGLE. The angle value will appear with
the angle labels (for example : m∠ABC = 60˚).

5. Repeat step 4. to measure all the angles of the quadrilateral. Click and drag each angle
measurement next to the vertex of the angle measured.

6. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click once on each side of the
quadrilateral in turn. On the CONSTRUCT Menu, select MIDPOINTS, and the midpoints
of each side will be placed.

7. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select SEGMENT. Click on a midpoint and then click on the
next one in clockwise order to join them with a line. Repeat this process to connect all
the midpoints to form a quadrilateral.

8. On the TOOLBOX Palette select POINTER, and click on a blank part of the worksheet.
Click on each of the segments constructed in step 7. in turn. On the MEASURE Menu,
select LENGTH. The length value for each side will appear, with labels (for example :
mEF = 4.35 cm). Click and drag each measurement to the middle of the side measured.

9. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click the mouse on each of the three
points that form an angle in the inner quadrilateral, ensuring that the angle vertex is the
SECOND point selected. On the MEASURE menu, select ANGLE.

10. Repeat step 9. to measure all the angles of the inner quadrilateral. Click and drag each
angle measurement next to the vertex of the angle measured.

11. Click and drag each corner of the quadrilateral ABCD until you have created one of the
following figures:
(a) square (b) rectangle (c) rhombus
(d) parallelogram (e) kite (f) trapezium
Investigation

1. From the measurements shown for quadrilateral EFGH, identify what type of
quadrilateral it is. Record the quadrilateral types for ABCD and EFGH.

2. Repeat steps 11. (construction) and 1. (investigation) to examine each of the quadrilateral
shapes for ABCD as listed, and identify the quadrilateral EFGH as formed by the
midpoints.

3. Click and drag each corner of quadrilateral ABCD to create an isosceles trapezium
(consult your Teacher if in doubt). What is the shape of quadrilateral EFGH ? Click on
one of the NON-parallel sides of ABCD and move it slowly in and out, and note what
happens to the shape of EFGH.

4. Click and drag each corner of quadrilateral ABCD until you have created a quadrilateral
which is NOT one of those listed in step 8.. What is the shape of quadrilateral EFGH ?
