Speed Control of DC Shunt Motor
Objective
To study the speed control of a DC shunt motor by the following methods:
(i) Armature voltage control: Variations of speed with armature voltage control at constant
field current.
(ii) Field Controk: Variation of speed with variation of field current at constant voltage.
Theory
Vo la R,
The speed of a DC motor is given by N= K, ape tpm.
Where K, is the constant of the DC motor, R, = armature resistance, V, = applied voltage in
volts across armature /,.
From the above speed relations, the speed of a DC motor can be varied by changing (/) the
applied voltage to the armature (i) flux.

1. DC motor
Procedure
1. The circuit is connected as shown in the circuit diagram.
2. The DC supply is switched on with minimum resistance in the field circuit and maximum
value of R, in the armature circuit.
3. The field current is adjusted to normal value corresponding to the normal speed.
4, Keeping field current constant, the voltage across the armature is changed by changing
R, in 5 steps. The armature voltage, speed and field currents are noted in Table — | for
each step.
5. The voltage across the armature is kept at rated value.
6. Keeping armature voltage constant, the field current of the motor is decreased in 5 steps
with the help of rheostat R,, The armature voltage, speed and field currents are noted in
Table — II for each step.Experimental data

Precaution
1. The current, voltage and speed are noted when values settle to a steady value.
2. Voltage across armature should not be applied without applying voltage to the field wind-
ing of a D.C. motor.
3. All connections are tightly connected.
4, The speed of the machine should not exceed 125% of the rated value.
5. The supply is switched off after experiment is over.LITRE TOTTI. OS AEA AT MAE IEA INA,
