Living the Lectionary

Seventh Sunday of Easter

Season: Easter
Week of June 5th

“Commands and Promises”

About the Season: We are in the season of Easter.

Easter is a 7 week long season, one week longer than
Lent. In this season, we celebrate the Resurrection
of our Lord and consider ourselves as a part of the
church which is promised a Resurrection like His.

About this Sunday: On this last Sunday of the

Easter season, we consider Jesus’ departure from this
earth to be “at the right hand of the Father”, and
look forward to our own presence at the throne of the
Father because of what Christ did for us.
Reflecting on the Readings:
• Acts 1:6-14 – He Was Lifted Up – Luke records
Jesus’ ascension noting the promises and
commands that He leaves His disciples. Are
you one of His disciples? What do His
commands and promises mean to you?
• Psalm 68 – Let God Arise – When God arises,
He shows His power in and over all of creation.
Where have you seen God’s power at work?
• I Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11 – Raised Up By Christ
– Peter explains that in the worst of times, we
are to cast our worries on Christ and know that
He will restore, support, strengthen and
establish us. What are some of your “worst
times”?
• John 17:1-11 – We Are One – Jesus prays to
His Father that all His followers might be united
in Him. Why is it important that we are united
in Him, rather than simply being united with
one another?
Law and Gospel:
• Law: Jesus’ departure from this world frightens
us. We’re afraid of what we might do and what
others might do to us if He’s gone. Moreover,
we know that He has commanded us to do His
Will, which most of the time, we’re not sure we
can do.
• Gospel: Jesus leaves us, but He leaves us with
promises and assurances that He will always
be with us and will send His Holy Spirit to give
us the power and grace that we need to fulfill
His will and live our lives to His glory.
Living the Lectionary Ideas:
• Learn: Jesus is ascended and with God the
Father, but we still recognize that He is with us
in special ways. Research in what ways we
consider Jesus to be “with us” today.
• Do: Promise to do something special for
someone in your life. See how easy or difficult
it is for you to fulfill that promise.
• Live: Take on the attitude of unity with those
around you. How can you get closer to those
whom Christ is uniting You to through Himself?

Dinners for Six

"Dinners for Six" is University Lutheran's newest
program to reach out into our neighborhoods to
be witnesses to the great love that we find in
Christ.
A "Dinner for Six" is two to four University
Lutheran members getting together to invite one
or more people from their neighborhood, school,
or work to dinner. It is that simple.
What we need:
• 4 individuals/couples/families who will agree
to host a "Dinner for Six" at their home or
out at a restaurant.
• 4 individuals/couples/families who will agree
to help and attend a "Dinner for Six" at
someone else's home or a restaurant.

University Lutheran table.
