HAPTIC TECHNOLOGY Touch the virtual

MADE BY ABHAY SINGH I.T 0809013002

Haptics is derived from the Greek word haptikos which means-being able to come into contact with THE SCIENCE OF TOUCH

What is haptics ?
It refers to technology that interfaces the user with a virtual Environment via sense of touch by applying forces vibrations And or motions

Virtual Reality
Virtual reality is the technology which allows the user to interact with the computer-simulated environment.

(whether it is real or imaginary world)

its mere imitation to the real world

Haptic feedback

Our primary interface with the real world is our haptic sense (sense of touch).

How important is our sense of touch?

Haptic feedback
In order to complete the imitation of the real world one should be able to interact with the environment and get a feedback.
User should be able to touch the virtual

object and feel a response from it.

This feedback is called Haptic Feedback.

Haptic devices
Haptic device is the one that provides a physical

interface between the user and the virtual environment by means of a computer Virtual reality based devices I. Exoskeletions II. Gloves and wearable devices III. Specific task and point source devices IV. Locomotion interfaces

Exoskeletons
large and immobile systems that the user must attach him or herself to.

Gloves and wearable devices

The user can move naturally without being weighed down by a large exoskeleton or immobile device E.g.Hand Master

Locomotion interface and full body force feedback

In a confined space, simulate unrestrained human mobility such as walking and running for virtual reality.

FEEDBACK DEVICES
Haptics is implemented through different type of interactions with a haptic device communicating with the computer. These interactions can be categorized into the different types of touch sensations a user can receive:

Tactile feedback Force feedback

Tactile feedback
Refers to the sensations felt by the skin. It allows the user to feel things such as the

texture of surfaces, temperature and vibration.

Force Feedback
It reproduces the directional forces that can result from solid boundaries. E.g. the weight of virtual objects, inertia, etc.

How it works?

Applications
Virtual reality
Virtual surgery Tele-presence Human assistive devices Games & many more

SURGICAL SIMULATION & MEDICAL TRAINING

Military Training in virtual environment

Ground Vehicle Simulators

Tele-presence

LIMITATIONS
These devices can only exert forces with

limited magnitude and not equally in all directions An ideal device would render zero impedence when simulating in a free space Haptic rendering algorithms operate in descrete times whereas users operate in continous line This device sensors have finite resolution

FUTURE VISION
RELIABLE VIRTUAL REALITY ACCURATE SURGERY: doctors train for

simple procedures without endangering patients

IMPROVED ACCURACY AND

RICHNESS IN OBJECT MODELING AND HAPTIC RENDERING

Conclusion
Finally we shouldnt forget that touch and physical interaction are among the fundemental ways in which we understand our world and effect to changes in it Large potential for applications in critical fields as well as for leisurely pleasures. Haptic devices must be miniaturized so that they are lighter, simpler and easier to use.
