Statement urging to Legislate the Irrawady Myitsone area to a National Park and readiness to join and solve should there be possible international legal issues
Date:2011 October 06 On the 23 of August 2011, the Federation of Trade Unions Burma FTUB issued a statement supporting the call by Daw Aung San Suu kyi for halting the Myitsone dam at the confluence of the Mali and N'Mai rivers at the source of source of the Irrawaddy river. FTUB records President U Thein Sein writing a letter to the Parliament where he stressed that for many reasons the Mytsone dam project will not take place during the tenure of this government. In order to stop the Myitsone dam project, FTUB urges that the Myitsone and repsective areas be designated as a National park through appropiate legislation at the Parliament. FTUB also reminds those who had called for stopping of the Myitsone dam that due to the stopping of the construction of the project, the government may possibly face international legal action from the international investors and that we all must stand by and support the government which acted on our demands. The former State Peace and Deveopment Counci led by U Than Shwe made all the decisions on the Myitsone project without an open and trasnparent process with the people. The country and the people now face huge negative consequences due to this. U Than Shwe is responsible for all these complications. To avoid the same kind of mistakes in the future, President U Thein Sein should take note of these happenings and make appropiate space for participation of the people. FTUB acknowledges President U Thein Sein for listening to the voice of the people and stopping the Myitsone project. And, should there be issues that need to be solved through the international legal perspective, as a national cause, FTUB and its members will join to solve the issues together with our countrymen.
