A royally fun Olympic Day

By Kiran Mongar, Class VIA
September 11 was a great day for Kanglung and Trashigang people because on that day it was Olympic Day and it was celebrated at Sherubtse College. Our chief guest was Bhutans Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck. About nine schools from around the district attended, so students from Kanglung, Wamrong, Khaling, Retshangdong, Radi, Rongthung, Yongphula, Bartsam and Trashigang were all together. Three schools slept at Kanglung Primary School. There were so many sports at Olympic Day, like tennis, football, karate, basketball, shooting, archery, bow and arrow making, tae kwon do, and volleyball. Sussma Mongar, a class VII student from Kanglung Higher Secondary School, said she learned some rules of tennis. In tennis, we have to fly the ball then hit it. We should bounce the ball once, she said. Some students from KPS got prizes, like Deki Lhazom (VIB). She said, I was in basketball. I got 2nd place prize while I was bouncing the ball. I liked the basketball coaches because they taught us so well. The Prince gifted all the participants with an Olympic t-shirt. He also walked around to the different activities and played the games and taught the students. All of the students were crazy for the prince.
Miss Rika Tateno

Yongphu Tshechu, fun for all ages

By Sonam Zangmo A, Class VIA
Our world is full of celebrations. Different countries have different popular celebrations. In Bhutan, tshechu is the most popular celebration. When asked how she enjoyed the Yongphu Tshechu, Madam Lisa Phu said, I like the beautiful mask dances. I wish I could learn how to mask dance. In this way, she enjoyed the tshechu. The Yongphu Tshechu was on 8 July to 10 July. We have 20 Dzongkhags in Bhutan so in every

Dzongkhag, there is a tshechu. We have tshechus to celebrate every year and we see many god statues and photos of god. At the same time, we wish from our heart to bring good luck. Madam Kinzang Lhamo said most people go to tshechu on the third day because on the last day we get blessings and the things that are sold by the shopkeepers are very cheap. At tshechu, small children can wear pants and shirts but adults and older children wear kiras and ghos. It is necessary for elders to wear the national dress when visiting tshechus because people should follow the rules. Elders may drink beer and alcohol with some meat to have fun. Everyone plays games and gambles on these days. When the day ends with a dark night, everyone feels happy and goes home.
