SVBC Visits the Chiriqu Highlands in Panama

We also birded Finca Draculas splendid garden and trails. Barred Becard and Flamecolored Tanager were highlights, along with Chestnut-capped Brush-Finch, and tiny Ochraceous Wrens. The last bird of the day was a handsome Bat Falcon high atop the pine back at the entrance to Cielito Sur at dusk. A delicious breakfast the next morning was followed by the most incredible birding of the trip. Starting at the Los Quetzales Trail entrance to Parque Nacional Volcan Baru, we had hardly walked 30 yards and there they were, Christmas green Quetzal. For some, a life bird, for others, perfect views of the sacred bird of the Incas.

Despite a slow border crossing at Rio Sereno, we checked in at the Cielito Sur B&B in Nueva Suiza in time to enjoy a picnic lunch in its lovely gardens. First stop after lunch, and a few wrong turns, was Finca Dracula, set in Swiss Alpslike countryside with terraced fields of cool weather crops: lettuces, cabbages, onions, potatoes. Finca Dracula is one persons laborof-love collection of thousands of orchids. Most beguiling were the so-called Dracula varieties, nodding their heads low in

reconnoitering stop at the Lagunas de Volcan before driving back to San Vito: we needed to get to the border before the authorities on both sides went to lunch! What a great trip! A special thanks to Jim Zook, our excellent and fun guide. Most of us would have missed seeing half the birds if not for his skill and patience.

Then on to the Parque Internacional La Amistad near Nubes at the north end of this mountain valley and a hearty lunch at the restaurant run by local women just inside the park. por Judy Richardson En un amanecer claro como el cristal, Alison y Michael Olivieri, Julie Girard y Dave Woolley, Gail y Harry Hull, Fred y Jean Schroeder, Judy Richardson, Kate Desvenain, y nuestro extraordinario gua, Jim Zook, llenaron tres carros y se dirigieron a las tierras altas de Chiriqu, Panam, por dos noches, 27 de febrero al 1 de marzo, la gira de campo del SVBC. Despus de un cruce de frontera lerdo en Ro Sereno, nos reg istramos en el Cielito Sur B&B en Nueva Suiza, a tiempo para disfrutar de un almuerzo tipo pic nic en sus hermosos jardines. Photo: Harry Hull En los comederos cercanos nos entretuvieron los colibres orejiviolceo pardo, el colirrayado, el colibr montas gorgiblanco, el ala de sable violceo, la amazilia ventriblanca, y la chispita gorginaranja, el pequeito colibr de las montaas no ms grande que un chiquiz. Despus de almuerzo y de varias vueltas equivocadas, la primera parada fue Finca Drcula, ubicada en un paisaje parecido a los Alpes suizos con terrazas con cultivos del fro: lechuga, repollo, cebolla, papas. La Finca Drcula es una coleccin de miles de orqudeas, que es la nia de los ojos de una persona. Las ms cautivadoras fueron las variedades de Dracula, con sus cabezas adormecidas en el da, pero despiertas y floreando de noche, como la historia que les da su nombre. Tambin observamos aves en los esplndidos jardines y senderos de Finca Drcula. Los atractivos fueron el cabezn ondeado y el cardenal, junto con el saltn cabecicastao y el soterrey ocroso. Empezando en la entrada del sendero Los Quetzales hacia el Parque Nacional Volcn Bar, no habamos caminado ni 30 metros y ah estaban, verde y rojo navidad con una cola larga y ondulante: los quetzales, persiguindose y disfrutando de un banquete de su fruta favorita, aguacatillos. Para algunos, primera vez en su lista de vida, para otros, vistas perfectas del ave sagrada de los Incas. muerzo dentro del parque, en el restaurante manejado por mujeres locales. Despus de una caminata en el bosque alrededor de la estacin de guardaparques, nuestro grupo se dividi. Unos regresaron a Cielito Sur para disfrutar de la tarde veraniega. Otros, como yo, caminamos por otro par de horas entre chubascos, extasindonos en el maravilloso bosque y sus gigantescos robles y encontrando aves difciles de ver la zeledonia, y el subepalo moteado. Para la mayora de nosotros, estas fueron primeras veces para nuestra lista de vida. Luego, grupos danzantes de reinitas carinegras, tangaras de monte cejiblanca y saltones de muslos amarillos. Mi favorito: el trepamusgo cachetn, un furnariido con brillantes colores caf y chocolate y espectaculares cachetes marrn que se hinchan cuando mira hacia ti. En nuestra ltima maana, antes de manejar de vuelta a San Vito, hicimos una breve parada de reconocimiento en Lagunas de Volcn: n e c e s i t b a m o s llegar a la frontera antes de que las autoridades se fueran a la hora del almuerzo!

Que viaje ms bello! Gracias especiales a Jim Zook, nuestro excelente y divertido gua. La mayora hubiramos fallado en ver la mitad de las aves si no fuera por su habilidad y paciencia.
