Measuring, Marking & Levelling

BMI 405 Viso Tape

The Viso tape will measure length and quickly show internal measurements through the top Viso window. Just run your tape to either side within a recess and there it is; no calculation or guesswork, and the clever integrated swing out arm and steel stylus enables the user to draw radii up to 3m. A tough polyamide case with blade lock mechanism protects the 16mm blade which has an anti-corrosive phosphate coating to ensure long life. Available either as a metric only tape or graduated with mm and inches. Made in Germany.

Axminster Professional Tape

Built to last, this tape features a blade with a non reflective finish and large easily read figures, graduated in millimetres and inches. The case is cast alloy with rubber inserts for a firm grip and protection. The end hook is triple riveted and the blade reinforced. Two rare earth magnets in the end hook are useful with steel work. The tape hook is also designed to hold over an edge with the tape flat or on either edge for greater accuracy when marking out. A slide button at the front of the case locks the blade, whilst a blade brake button below the case is easily operated. A rubber bump stop helps prevent damage to the end hook. It includes a belt clip and wrist strap.

BMI two COMP Tapes

A range of high quality, chunky tapes with tough cases from one of Germanys leading manufacturers of measuring equipment. They feature rubber grips on the case, easy-to-operate locking sliders and belt clips. The blades with their white background and black and red figuring are particularly easy to read. They are 19mm wide on the 5m lengths and 25mm on the 8m, with a nonreflecting surface and a triple-riveted end stop. Available in a choice of two lengths and either metric only or metric/imperial calibrations.

Axminster Auto Lock Tape

These are rugged tapes in an ABS case with a rubber grip/bump protector. The blade is 22mm wide with a non reflective finish and clear, easily read markings in both metric and imperial. The end hook allows the tape to be used flat or on either edge, and with two rare earth magnets can be easily attached to steel work or other iron/ferrous surfaces etc. The blade automatically locks as it is pulled from the case. To retract the blade simply press either the top or bottom release/brake button. Case also has a belt clip and wrist strap.

Axminster Double Sided Tape Advent Vice-Versa Tape 5m

Left to right, right to left, top to bottom, whichever way you look at it this tape is easy to read. The dual reading metric blade is printed with scales on both sides and all edges so now you dont have to guess or read upside down. You can take a measurement from either the left or the right without any problem. Because the blade markings are printed on the underneath of the blade you can also do the same when working overhead. Heavy-duty soft grip case, lock button and triple rivet double sided end hook, 25mm wide blade. As well as having all the features you would expect from heavy duty contractors tapes - wide deep curved blades, rubber grip cases, blade brakes, etc., these two tapes (5 metres and 8 metres long both 25mm wide) are dual marked imperial and metric on both front and back of the blade. The main advantage of this feature is to allow the tape to be used for marking lines as well as measuring, the curvature on the blade giving sufficient stiffness to enable a reasonably accurate line to be drawn along the tape. The floating end clips are secured by three rivets and protrude from both sides of the tape.

Rules

Axminster Stainless Steel Rules Four Fold Rule

Also sometimes referred to as blindmans rules because their bold markings enabled the rule to be used in the dim light of a workshop with windows covered in sawdust and encrusted with cobwebs. Both rules are 18mm wide, four-fold and fitted with brass hinges and, in the case of the wooden version, protective tips as well. The wooden version is calibrated zero to one metre in millimetres on one side and zero to 36 in eighths on the other. The plastic version is has one sixteenth divisions on the imperial side. A pair of very handy rules; tools much loved by the traditionalists amongst us. The graduations on these rules are engraved for permanence and are clear and easy to read. One edge has imperial graduations in 1/16ths, 1/32nds and 1/64ths, and the other edge has metric graduations in 0.5mm and millimetres. The reverse side is engraved with metric/imperial conversion tables. The 150mm(6) rule is 0.5mm thick, the 300mm(12), 450mm(18) and 600mm(24) are 1mm thick, whilst the 1000mm(40) is a hefty 1.5mm thick. We believe these represent the best overall value for money available.

Veritas Ruler Stop Axminster Metric Stainless Rule BMI IdeeFIX Metric/Imperial
This innovative product provides a spirit level and telescopic rule in one. You can measure distance whilst ensuring you are level. Measuring internal dimensions of windows, doors and walls has never been easier, just pull out the telescopic rod, check for level on any of the three vials, vertical, horizontal & bulls eye, then read your measurement. Rules
Black Coated Stainless Steel Rule with White Markings

Stanley 64R Rules

Stanleys range of rustless precision steel rules all feature an antiglare satin chrome finish which contrasts well with the black permanent figures and graduations making these rules easy to read and use. The 64R Series is still our best selling steel rule, despite the competition from lower cost newcomers. One side is marked on both edges with imperial measurements sub-divided into 1/16ths, 1/32nds, 1/64ths, 10ths, 20ths, 50ths and 100ths. The other side is marked off in metric - one edge in 0.5 millimetres and the other in millimetres, figured every 10 millimetres. Zero reading from one end with hanging hole at the other. The metric graduations conform to BS4372 1968.

Axminster Three Sided Metric Scale Rule

The traditional three-sided scale rule as used by architects and surveyors. The rule is 30cm long and the metric scales are 1:20, 1:25, 1:50, 1:75, 1:100 and 1:125. Anodised aluminium with clear markings in black.

The graduations on these rules are printed in white on a black background making them very clear and easy to read. One edge features imperial graduations in 1/32nds, 1/64ths and 1/16ths. The opposite edge has metric graduations in 0.5mm and millimetres. Made from stainless steel they will not rust, and the contrast between the black and white takes a lot of guess work out of marking out.

Japanese Stainless Steel Rules

These hardened stainless steel rules have an anti-glare pearl chrome finish. This contrasts with the clear bold markings to form a rule that is far easier to read than many others we have come across in the past. These quality rules have millimetre graduations on the upper edge and half millimetres on the lower. The reverse of the rule has conversion tables from imperial to metric as well as handy information on thread tapping sizes. The rules read zero from one end with hanging hole at the other.

Veritas Dividing Rule

A unique tool and one that solves the age-old problem of accurately dividing a workpiece or board into equal divisions. The rule is placed on the board and skewed until the pins contact the edges; a pencil or scriber is placed in the appropriate division hole (from 2 to 10 divisions are possible) and a line drawn down the board. Board widths of up to 200mm(8) can be accommodated. A second scale, with holes positioned every 1/16 allows the rule to , be used as a gauge for marking lines parallel to the edge of the board. The use of swivelling pins allows marking around curved edges. Made from brass and stainless steel to the high standard we are used to seeing from Veritas.

Golden Rules
Phi (or the golden ratio as it is also known) is a unique number that plays a prominent role in architectural and furniture composition and design, where it is used to proportion objects for aesthetic appeal. These Rules simplify Phi calculation and proportioning during design (and help identify the golden ratio in existing objects). They have a dual scale with normal graduations on the top edge and Phi-scale graduations on the bottom edge. Both faces are graduated; one face converts a known long measurement to an unknown short measurement, and the other face does the opposite. To scale a measurement, you simply find the identical measurement from the top scale on the lower scale. The hardened stainless-steel rules have a matt finish, ground edges and blackfilled etched markings. Excellent layout aids, they are available in 6 or 12 lengths.

Self Adhesive Scales - Pair Axminster Centre Rules

Stainless steel centring rules with endless uses throughout the workshop. The most important feature is that there is no need for mathematical calculations, the main cause of workshop errors! Imperial graduations only with a centre zero on one edge (6-0-6 or 12-0-12) and a standard graduation (0-12 or 0-24) on the other edge. Not only are they useful for centring but can also be used as a left hand/right hand reading rule that will be found to be exceptionally useful when setting out. This self adhesive scale is ideal for home made jigs, tables, fixtures and many other applications. The scale consists of two 16mm wide tapes each featuring both metric and imperial graduations. The tapes can be simply fixed by peeling off the backing tape and pressing down onto a smooth surface. The colour is black on a silver/grey background so it is just like reading a quality steel rule. When making measuring tables we suggest routing a shallow groove so the tapes sit just below the surface to prevent them becoming worn or damaged. The left hand tape reads L to R from 0 to 58.5cm in millimetres and 0 to 23 in 1/16ths, the right hand tape reads R to L from 0 to 63.5cm in millimetres and 0 to 25 in 1/16ths.

Axminster Bevelled Straight Edges

These are top quality steel workshop straight edges, 38mm wide and 5mm thick, ground on all surfaces. Their main uses are for cutting thin material such as card and veneer and for checking the straightness of lengths of timber, machine tables, plane soles and so on.

Veritas Steel Straight Edge

Workshop accuracy begins with a benchmark straight edge as a surface reference. These Canadian-made precision steel straight edges are ground flat over the entire length on both edges, the 300(12) and 610(24) lengths to within 0.025mm and the 915mm(36) length to within 0.038mm. All have been stress relieved to remain true under temperature variation. Useful for checking whether surfaces are flat or straight, they are 38mm wide and easily stand on edge unsupported, leaving both hands free for precise measurement or tool adjustment. All have hang holes, allowing storage on a nail or hook.

Aluminium straight edge 50mm wide for use on all types of cutting work. A large raised handle not only keeps valuable finger tips out of the way but allows pressure to be brought to bear without the risk of slippage halfway through a cut. Graduated in millimetres.

A. 300mm(12) Steel Straight Edge At just over 500g and 6.3mm(1/4) thick, the 300mm straightedge is a handy size for checking things such as plane soles or water stones for flatness. It is also a good choice anywhere a larger straightedge would be unwieldy in use or would risk damaging the item being checked. B. 610mm(24) Steel Straight Edge An invaluable aid for machine set-up, the 610mm straightedge is a good size for setting up stationary machines such as planers and jointers. At slightly more than 1kg, it weighs enough to stay in place while you make adjustments. 6.3mm1/4 thick. C. 915mm(36) Steel Straight Edge Great for long-bed jointer and larger machine set-up, the 915mm straight edge is a good master shop reference. Weighing a substantial 2.6kg, it is 9.5mm(3/8) thick. The linished sides give a textured surface that makes the straight edge easier to grip with confidence.

Japanese Stainless Steel Straight Edges

Multiple use tools for the Japanese craftsperson. For checking flatness or to check progress when truing a piece of timber or as a rule. The edge is bevelled and the scale engraved, graduations are metric in millimetres and centimetres, with clear markings for half centimetres. The top edge has an angle scale, with markings for 60, 45, 30 and 15 either side of the centre line. Made from 2mm thick stainless steel and available either 300mm or 400mm long. An accurate tool and well recommended.

Veritas Aluminium Straight Edge

With a reference edge machined flat to the British standard of 0.075mm over the entire length but weighing in at only 500g this 610mm aluminium straight edge with its hour glass cross section is easy to handle and stands well on the 11mm wide reference face to check the set up on your machine tables. Versatile as an important arbiter to flatness that you can trust, needed for so many set-ups and projects in the workshop.

Axminster Super Precision Straight Edge

A choice of 2 lengths of straight edge, made to a very high standard of accuracy in tool steel. Ground and hand scraped for an almost perfectly flat surface. The quoted accuracy is within 17 microns over the length of the edge for the 600mm unit, 21 microns for the 900mm version. The parallelism of the faces is within 33 microns for the 600mm unit and 40 microns for the 900mm version. The edge is bevelled to provide an excellent visual contact with the workpiece. Straight edges of this accuracy are hard to find and will prove invaluable to anyone requiring a reference straight edge for measurement, setting up of machines or for test purposes.

Squares
Axminster Engineers Squares
These general duty steel squares have hardened steel blades securely riveted onto a steel stock. Although intended primarily for engineering use they are also very popular with cabinet makers who have a need for a square which will hold its accuracy over a long period of time. Unlike conventional joiners squares they are accurate on both the inside and outside edges. Their realistic price and good level of accuracy make them exceptional value for money. Manufactured to BS939 grade 2.

Engineers Centre Squares

A pair of high quality alloy tool steel precision centre squares intended for the accurate location of the centre of round stock. Ideal for toolmakers and for general lathe work, both metal and wood. Note, size stated is the maximum bar diameter.

All Metal Level Square

A very useful addition to our range of squares. The 200mm long steel blade, marked both sides in both metric and imperial, is riveted to a machined die-cast aluminium stock. The top of the stock is cut at 45 allowing mitres to be marked. The level vial built into the stock increases the usefulness of the tool no end; just think, you can check level and squareness all in one go.

Axminster Sliding Square

This is a gem of a square, nicely made and very versatile. With a stock length of 62mm and a blade length of either 100mm or 150mm it is just the job for getting into tight corners. The end face of the 25mm wide stock is ground square to the long side so it can get into places where no other square can reach, just the job for squaring up a tap as it starts to bite, for example. Apart from the obvious use as a try square it can serve as a depth gauge and as a gauge for marking off parallel lines. With the rule set to the required offset and a pencil or scriber held against the end the gauge can be run along the edge of the work and a line can be marked out parallel to the datum edge. This is quicker and more accurate than marking off two points and joining with a straight edge. The blade is marked in both imperial and metric.

Veritas Precision Squares

This square could easily become the most picked up measuring tool in your tool kit. It has the accuracy of an engineers square (0.025mm per 25mm of length). All four edges are ground, and both faces have graduations on the inside and outside edges. The 80mm leg in half millimetres and the 150mm leg in millimetres (3 leg in 32nds and the 6 leg in 16ths). Use this square for general layout and checking whether surfaces are flat or straight. It also makes a great tool for machine set-up, since it lets you measure and check for square on the same plane. It features an engineers corner ensuring that the square seats well, even over saw whiskers. Made from high carbon steel with hard chrome plating, the markings are etched and black-filled for ease of reading. Made in USA.

Crown Try Squares

Economically priced but still with an assurance of both quality and accuracy. These squares have beechwood stocks with brass wear strips and blued spring steel blades attached with steel rivets and brass washers. All made to BS3322 and priced to make them attractive to either occasional users or schools and colleges.

Squares

Crown Adjustable Square

This is the perfect answer for anyone who naturally mistrusts the accuracy of their try square, an adjustable square. There are two screws in the base of the stock for making the adjustment, just unscrew one of them by, say, half a turn and tighten up the other one by a similar amount and the job is done. You can either check it against a known reference square or use the time-honoured method of marking a line square to the edge of a flat surface and then reversing the square to check that the two lines coincide. The square is very nicely presented with a brass blade, rosewood stock faced with heavy brass strips and brass inserts to cover the pivot pin and adjusting mechanism. Overall length is 145mm.

Veritas Sliding Squares Trend 3D Combination Tri Square

Combines, in one compact tool, the ability to measure and mark 90 and 45, both left and right, mark off parallel lines and, possibly best of all, to transfer square lines around two sides of a piece of timber, which should help to avoid those cumulative errors which often creep in. The 225mm long steel blade is etched with a metric/imperial scale and is securely fixed to a solid diecast body and the marking slider, which has a mounting hole for a pencil, slides along the blade and secures with a locking screw. The 45 blade is locked back into the body when not needed. Well thought-out design and high quality construction puts this square into the must have category. These cabinetmakers squares are used to lay out or transfer measurements quickly and accurately; you always have an ample reference face against your work without having to flop the square. This also simplifies working in two axes at once (e.g., measuring in 50mm and over 40mm), substantially reducing the chance of error when measuring and marking two dimensions. The stainless steel blade is 75mm wide and 150mm long, machine ground on all four edges and graduated to 100mm along both edges and across one end to 70mm. The Imperial model is graduated to 4 along both edges and across one end to 3 . The diamond cut-out in the blade holds a pencil tip in position and makes it easy to draw lines parallel to an edge. The locking mechanism has a notched pin like those on combination squares, with the blade bearing on polished, hardened steel reference pins set in the body. Accurate and well made.

Joseph Marples Trial 1 Set

This five-piece set has a great heritage based on Trial 1 designs last produced over 70 years ago in the heyday of fine tool making. The 230mm (9) square and 250mm (10) mitre square both feature 3mm thick brass on both inside and outside faces. They have chemically blacked spring steel blades, secured to the stocks with brass diamond washers and steel rivets. The mortice/marking gauge has a 3mm thick polished brass face. The stock locks onto the stem using a brass, knurled thumbscrew with a protective brass pressure pad. The locking screw is set within a traditional brass protective shield. A screw slide gives fine, precise micro-adjustment of the mortice pins. On the reverse of the stem is a marking gauge pin. The bevel has a brass facing on both the front and back of the stock. The 230mm (9) blued steel blade locks using a knurled brass thumbscrew. A high carbon steel marking knife with a riveted rosewood handle completes this historic set. All the rosewood used is plantation grown. 12 rule

Axminster No.1 Odd Jobs Veritas Saddle Square

Transferring a line from face side to face edge and vica versa of timber is now as easy as falling off a log. With this saddle square the line can be marked in both planes without moving the square and maintaining prime accuracy without really trying. Produced in anodised aluminium to a practical but stylish design, which is available in two sizes. One at 50mm wide, the standard, forms an L of 32 x 57mm, the large version 34 x 84mm and 38mm wide , has a central slot for locating and marking stud locations accurately. This is an improved version of a nineteenth century much loved and unique tool. Originally the Stanley No.1 Odd Jobs (Patented 1888). This is the forerunner of the modern combination square, and still a very handy, relevant and useful pocket measuring and marking tool today. It combines the functions of square, mitre square 45 and 135, depth gauge, level, marking compass, marking gauge and rule. The body is cast and machined brass and the rule is brass edged beech. Fits easily into the apron pocket, it will soon become a real favourite around the workshop. P.S. The flat opposite the scribe point is the screwdriver to adjust the pivot screw. The rule is graduated in cms, mms and 16ths. Supplied with 150mm(6) rule.

Combination & Carpenters Squares

Multiscribe Professional
Initial design for the Multiscribe was a profile marking tool used to mark a line equidistant from a reference surface. At this particular task it is faster, more accurate and versatile than many similar products. There is a huge bonus, in that the Multiscribe also functions as a combination square and has many other uses, we counted at least 18 meaning it fully lives up to its name. Its ideally suited to the tradesperson and home enthusiast alike. It functions as: a parallel scribe, convex or concave scribe, compass, depth gauge, mortice gauge, plumb bob, vertical and horizontal level, 90 and 45 square, pencil sharpener and 250mm rule with 5mm graduations, to name but a few. Multiscribe is a high quality, well engineered and manufactured tool. Made in UK.

Carpenters Squares
Japanese Carpenters Squares
The exact equivalent of the western carpenters framing square and used for exactly the same purpose. In fact they have to be very accurate, because if the carpenters square is out then the whole building is going to be out. Unlike western framing squares these are light and flexible. The cross section of the arms shows a bevel on each edge allowing the square to be tilted when marking out, bringing the graduations closer to the workpiece, minimising errors caused by parallax. The arms are graduated in centimetres and millimetres. Interestingly the reverse of the long arm has a scale for determining the maximum size of a square beam obtainable from a round log, simply by placing the scale across the diameter and taking the measurement. Size 500mm x 250mm.

A pocket sized combination square small enough to be carried around in a back pocket and large enough to do the majority of your everyday marking out jobs. Just think, how often do you actually use the full length of a standard 300mm(12) combination square? Not that often, we will wager. This is a very nice looking tool, the blade is pearl chrome for maximum clarity and the stock is cast iron with a blue crackle finish and ground edges and faces. Calibrations are both metric, centimeters and millimeters and imperial in eighths and sixteenths one edge and thirty-seconds and sixty-fourths (for the keen sighted) on the other. The centre finder is a useful feature, not that often used but handy for those who turn, whether in wood or metal. Other functions are try square, 45 mitre square, rule, depth gauge, marking gauge and level.

Roofmaster Aluminium Rafter Square

A very useful general purpose rafter square, with arm lengths of 400mm and 600mm. Made from anodised aluminium with white impressed markings and some very useful roofing and conversion tables. This innovative tool is the modern alternative to the roofers square and ready reckoner. Roofmaster greatly simplifies the job of constructing a roof. The pitch angle as specified by the architect or designer is the only number you require to set the tool for all roof members. Roofmaster covers all standard roof shapes based on rectangular or square plans. Roofmaster consists of a tough, durable laminate body with an adjustable, lockable double-sided fence. On each side, the Roofmaster features calibrated arcs, each designated to a particular roof member. Setting the fence to the pitch angle on a selected arc provides the required cutting angles for that given member. There are tables for length of common, hip and valley rafters per metre of run and information panels show which edge of the blade to use for the selected rafter cut. The compact size (450mm on the longest side), locking fence and easy to read markings make the Roofmaster the ideal roofers tool.

Supplied with a durable, padded carrying case with a belt clip, carpenters pencil and 72 page book: Expert Guide to Roof Construction and Framing by John Carroll.

Veritas Square Fence

A carpenters square is frequently needed just because of its size. The key disadvantage of such a square (its lack of a supporting fence ledge) can now be eliminated using a Veritas square fence. The 200mm long anodized aluminum extrusion can be readily attached to either the stock or blade of your square (depending upon intended use) with the two integral brass screws. The face of the square fence aligns with the edge of the workpiece while the weight of the framing square rests on the material. One side offers a 25mm high face. Flipping it over, the opposite side has a 6mm face, letting you use it on workpieces this thin without having to slide them to the edge of your workbench. Its purposeful shape not only acts as a versatile fence, but also gives your framing square a handle, hugely increasing its utility. Ideal for use on round-edge material and sheet stock. Made in Canada.

The gauge can also be used to set up a bevel cut on a bandsaw, circular saw or mitre saw. Comes in a foam lined wooden box. Blade length is 155mm. Transferring a 45 mitre line to an adjacent perpendicular face is never easy, judging the exact position can be tricky. Not so, if it can be done with a single tool such as this Veritas Mitre Saddle. Smaller stock is also much easier to mark using this tool. The square leg is 55mm long, and the mitre face 45mm long by 32mm deep. Made from anodised aluminium.

Japanese Shinwa Sliding Bevel

This type of tool is essential to many of the trades found in woodwork. The Shinwa sliding bevel features an anodised aluminium stock and a 1.5mm thick stainless steel blade. The best aspect is the locking mechanism located on the end of the stock so it never gets in the way. The thumb screw clamps the blade very firmly, and allows the bevel to be flipped for use on either side. The blade can be set at any angle from 0 to 180. Use to transfer or lay out angles. Stock 150mm, blade 250mm.

Crown Traditional Screw Lock Bevel

There are occasions when the ease of operation of a lever lock bevel is outweighed by the nuisance of the lock getting in the way. For this reason we have reintroduced the traditional screw lock bevel, which provides secure locking of the blade whilst leaving the stock clear of protrusions. Rosewood stock with solid brass fittings.

Sliding Bevels & Protractors

True Angle Adjustable Protractors Bahco Sliding Bevel

Rarely have we found a better design than the Bahco 9574 sliding bevel. The stock is anodised aluminium with orange ABS inserts, lightweight, hard wearing and easily spotted in the tool box. The 200mm long blade is stainless steel. A wing nut at the base of the stock operates the locking mechanism. This simplifies the setting of the bevel and leaves the stock free of knobs, screws and any other protuberances.

Veritas Sliding Bevels

As locking mechanisms go these bevels have one that is pretty good. A cam-lock mechanism is cast from silicon bronze and let into the body. The silicon bronze cam-lock lever is set flush with the stock and there is a recess provided so that the user can release the blade without losing a thumbnail. The wooden stock is resin impregnated, for strength, durability and stability. Available as either a 100mm(4) or 250mm(10). Blades are stainless steel. Used in conjunction with the bevels the stainless steel setting tool allows a sliding bevel to be set at any angle from 1 to 60 in 1/2 increments. Similarly it can be used in conjunction with a bevel to check existing angles. The blade is 75 x 180mm(3 wide & 7 long), and the graduations etched for permanence. The reverse has common dovetail and polygon angles.

The Original True Angle tool is the worlds fastest and easiest angle making tool available. Just rotate the blades and read the dial. The hairline locates the exact angle within a tolerance of 5/1000ths of an inch. The blades rotate 360 in both directions. To lock the blades, lightly tighten the finger nut. To unlock the blades rotate the top blade anti-clockwise. The Original True Angle replaces every triangle, protractor, try square, bevel square, rafter square, framing square, combination square, or any other angle making template presently manufactured anywhere in the world. Made of special plastic the True Angle is virtually unbreakable.

GemRed Digital Angle Rule Nobex Multifix

Multifix is a multi-functional angle measuring device which will not only accurately measure inside or outside angles (over the range of 70 to 180), but will also automatically divide the angle into two, ready for subsequent setting of a mitre saw or disc sander fence. This means, for example, that the corner between two walls of a room, or other structure, can be measured in seconds and the half angle transferred straight to the saw for producing a perfectly matching cornice, dado rail or skirting board. Accuracy is guaranteed and the time saving can be enormous. Swedish made. This is a 2-in-1 folding rule with a big difference, having a digital readout of the angles. Measure both the angle and length at the same time with a clear display and bold markings in both metric and imperial on the rules. The rules are made from corrosion resistant stainless steel. The battery life is around 200 hours and is protected by auto shut down after 6 minutes. They have a clever auto-start of the digital read out, this will switch on as soon as you open the rule, saving time and fumbling for a button. A serious tool for any carpentry or setting out tasks.

Axminster Universal Protractor

A precision-made adjustable protractor with a multitude of uses in the engineers and cabinetmakers workshop. The main rule can be re-positioned to give a working length of up to 230mm and the stock has a length of 60mm. The angle between the two can be set accurately to 5 minutes of arc with the aid of the built-in magnifying glass and the vernier scale. An attachment is provided for the measurement of very acute angles, often a problem with adjustable angle measurers. The whole instrument is made from ground stainless steel and the scale is pearl chrome for ease of reading.

Marking Gauges

3-in-1 Brass Marking Gauge

Three tools in one - a cutting gauge, a pin gauge and a wheel gauge. The unique swivelling pin/blade chuck takes either a pin or a blade that locks in place (after extension is set) using a set screw in the end of the 115mm gauge stem. The cutting blade can be set for either right or left handed use. The opposite end of the stem is tapped to accept a 9.5mm diameter wheel cutter. The fence and the internal portion of the locking collet are a single eccentric brass turning. The 25mm diameter fence is eccentric to maximise rub depth. and also prevents the gauge from rolling off the workbench. Comes complete with a dozen spare blades, two hardened steel pins, a wheel cutter screw, hex key and instruction leaflet. Made in Canada.

Crown Small Marking Gauges

These three small gauges are beautifully made from solid rosewood with brass fittings. The stems are 150mm(6) long and the heads are approximately 50mm(2) square. Used for small or delicate work where a full sized standard tool would be too cumbersome. Choose from a marking gauge, cutting gauge or combination screwslide mortice/marking gauge.

Veritas Dual Marking Gauge

With two independently adjustable rods, this gauge can scribe both sides of a mortice at once. The length of each ground stainless-steel rod is very precise. By registering the tails against either side of a chisel, you can set the cutters to span the exact width of the chisel blade. Projection is easy to set, an internal Oring keeps light but constant friction on each rod; a thumbscrew locks the setting. One rod has its cutting edge at the extreme end of the rod, making it useful for transferring dimensions or as a depth gauge. As with all Veritas marking gauges, the wheel cutters avoid the problems of wandering that can occur with pinstyle marking gauges. They cut wood fibres rather than tear them and they mark cleanly, even on cross grain. These hardened steel wheel cutters scribe perfectly at any point of their circumference. They are oriented with the cutting bevels facing in opposite directions, so you can always mark your line with the bevel facing the waste side of any cut. Each cutter is fully retractable for safe storage or to permit use with a single cutter. The rods project offcentre from the anodized aluminium body, which helps the gauge resist rolling on a workbench and maximizes the area of the 50mm diameter brass face that can register against the work piece. 190mm overall, the gauge has a setting range from zero to 145mm. The aluminium housing has a brass face and the rods are stainless steel. Made in Canada.

The hardened steel wheel cutter scribes perfectly at any point of its circumference. Since it cuts wood fibres rather than tears, it marks cleanly, even on cross grain. The wheels single-sided bevel also pulls the gauge face against the stock, maintaining accuracy. Its cutting edge is at the extreme end of the rod, useful for transferring dimensions such as tenon shoulder and mortice depth. The wheel retracts into the face of the gauge for storage and protection. The gauges are very easy to set, since each has an internal O-ring to keep light but constant friction on the rod. Standard and micro-adjust gauges are available with either a plain rod, or with an Imperial or metric graduated rod. The rod of the Imperial gauge is graduated to 6 inches in 16ths; the metric version has graduations to 150mm.

Tite-Mark Marking Gauge

This marking gauge measures with unrivalled standards of performance and quality. The stem is a steel rod 180mm(7) long by 8mm(5/16) diameter, with a groove along its length to take the clamping screw points and the hardened cutting wheel securely fixed to the end. The solid brass body is in three parts, the central knurled section forms a micrometer adjuster whilst the thumbscrews on the other two sections are used to lock the head. When not in use the blade can be retracted safely into a recess in the head. A beautifully made and very functional tool. The extension rods are supplied as one 75mm and one 150mm rod, these can be used individually or joined to make a single 225mm extension. They can be used with the marking, scoring or morticing blades. The scoring blade is 15mm diameter and used to score thin wood for slicing and snapping or cutting veneer. Joseph Marples No 4 Cutting Gauge Axminster Scribe-nTrace

Scribing is necessary when fitting a variety of materials in common use around the home. Classic examples include fitting a kitchen worktop back against an uneven wall, or fitting skirting board down onto an undulating floor surface. The Axminster Scribe-ntrace makes these tasks so much easier to carry out with precision. Once you have one of these, were sure you will wonder how you ever managed without it. The body of the Scribe-n-trace features an eccentric locking pencil holder which ensures the pencil is always firmly locked and centrally located. Scribe-n-trace is supplied with its very own Axminster pencil and sharpener. The 17.3mm diameter tracing bush is used to trace scribing lines giving an offset of 8.65mm, the all important measurement that is needed when using a 30mm guide bush in conjunction with a 1/2(12.7mm) diameter router cutter. The complete Scribe-n-trace consists of a scribe body with the cam lock feature to secure the pencil, 80mm, 50mm, 30mm and 17.3mm bushes and a metal pencil sharpener. The design of the stock and stem is the same as the Joseph Marples No 2 Marking Gauge except that the steel pin has been replaced by a knife, held in place by a brass wedge. As with the No 2 the head is fitted with brass wear strips for long life and the locking screw is on one side of the head rather than the back making it much easier to handle. Maximum capacity 185mm.

Marking/Mortice Gauge Heads

These mortice gauge heads will convert any wheel-marking gauge (with a 5/16 dia. rod) into a mortice gauge. Made from hardened carbon steel, the 16mm diameter wheel cutters will scribe at any point in their circumference and slice rather than tear fibres for clean, accurate cuts. The single-bevel cutters can be set as close as 9.5mm apart. A shaft collar (included) ensures the shaft of the gauge remains parallel to the workpiece, preventing accidental tilting of the cutters in use. Supplied as a pair of cutters with a shaft collar, hex key and instructions. Made in Canada.

Joseph Marples Trial 1 Mortice Marking Gauge

Made in the tradition of tools from the heyday of craftsmanship, this combined marking and mortice gauge is a truly impressive piece of equipment. The body is of rosewood with a very substantial brass facing and has a well engineered locking screw which operates on a brass pressure pad to avoid marking of the stock. A thumb screw on the end of the stock provides very fine control over the mortice width setting and the marking pins are hardened for accuracy and long life. We are tempted to say that this is one for the mantelpiece but that really would be depriving you of the benefits of a very accurate and functional piece of marking equipment.

Lie-Nielsen Dovetail Marker

Formed in a T the brass stock holds the Rosewood reference plate secure in either hand so that well prepared timber can be marked out accurately for a 1 in 6 slope for soft woods or 1 in 7 for hard woods. These slopes are indicated clearly on the brass stock.

Veritas Dovetail Saddle Markers Joseph Marples Trial 1 Set

These are precision machined with the traditional 1:6 & 1:8 angles, long legs ensure accurate registration. A saddle enables you to mark a continuous line around a corner. Both straight and angled lines can be scribed simultaneously, ensuring alignment. The inside corner is relieved to ensure flush seating even on saw whiskers. Made from anodised aluminium, these are light and durable.

Veritas Bar Gauge Heads

A bar gauge has two main uses, firstly for comparing measurements such as the diagonals in a drawer and secondly for transferring measurements for fitting shelves into recesses and the like. The openings in the heads are 3/4 x 1/2 and are designed to take two pieces of timber 3/4 x 1/4 (not supplied) of any convenient length. This is one of those really simple tools which you wonder how you ever managed without.

Axminster Digital Height Gauge 150mm(6)

Jetech 23 Blade Feeler Gauge

Feeler gauges are mainly used in engineering or by mechanics to measure gap widths. The Jetech feeler gauge consists of twentythree dual calibrated measuring blades each 90mm long. They are high quality steel, hardened, tempered and polished for longterm accuracy. This is an ideal and precise tool for measuring gaps between 0.02mm up to 1.00mm. It is also possible to stack the blades to measure intermediate or wider gaps. Permanently etched on each blade is both the metric and imperial thickness. The sizes are: 0.02mm(0.0008), 0.03mm(0.001), 0.04mm(0.0015), 0.05mm(0.002), 0.10mm(0.004), 0.15mm(0.006), 0.20mm(0.008), 0.25mm(0.010), 0.30mm(0.012), 0.35mm(0.014), 0.40mm(0.016), 0.45mm(0.018), 0.50mm(0.020), 0.55mm(0.022), 0.60mm(0.024), 0.65mm(0.026), 0.70mm(0.028), 0.75mm(0.030), 0.80mm(0.032), 0.85mm(0.034), 0.90mm(0.035), 0.95mm(0.038) & 1.00mm(0.040).

Butt Hinge Marking Gauges

Designed for marking the position of hinges on both doors and door jambs, it makes chiselling out the hinge recess easy. Mark the position of the butts, set the butt gauge on the mark and strike squarely with a hammer. Three hardened and ground edges mark exactly the area to be removed making chiselling out simplicity itself. A nicker on the upper surface is used to mark the depth required for the hinge.

The gauge comprises a precision machined alloy block, into which the linear scale of the Digital Readout (DRO) is bolted. This fixing is set very precisely at right angles to the base, to ensure accurate measurement. The linear scale is also marked with analogue scales from 0-6 and from 0-150mm. These scales are read against the lower edge of the Digital Read Out. There are three rare earth magnets set into the base of the block to ensure the gauge is held flat against a horizontal ferrous metal surface. The digital readout is mounted on the linear scale and has an L shaped pointer attached to it; there is also a small locking screw with a serrated knob; that will clamp the DRO. The L shaped pointer is ground to a fine edge to ensure the most accurate measurement; it is also hardened so that the points can be used for scribing lines at the set height.

Axminster Steel Profile Gauge Woodworkers Gauge Block Set

Accurately machined from solid brass, the Axminster Woodworkers Gauge Block Set consists of six 25mm diameter blocks with heights of 16, 8, 4, 2, 1.5 and 1mm. Used singly or in various combinations these give an accurate guide from 1 to 32.5mm in half millimetre steps. Used for setting other gauges, testing widths of grooves, mortices etc. or fences to fine tolerances. Another of those How did I ever manage without it tools. Supplied in a velvet lined presentation box to keep it well out of harms way when not in use. This steel gauge has smaller diameter pins than the plastic versions and can therefore produce a more precise outline when being used for fine detail work. The length is 150mm(6) and the maximum profile depth is 45mm.

Axminster Plastic Profile Gauge

Used to find or measure a profile or edge so that it may be transferred accurately onto the work to be cut. Manufactured in high quality plastic.

Thickness Gauge 0-15mm Axminster HG-1 Height Gauge

The HG-1 is designed to take the guesswork out of setting up routers, router tables and saw tables. It is great when needing to set up or replicate exact settings. Made with a solid cast iron base, it provides a strong, fixed point that allows adjustment of the gauge without any movement. Providing both imperial and metric scales, this gauge also has a vernier scale for increased accuracy to 0.05mm, allowing for micro adjustments to settings. Measures to a maximum height of 180mm. A thickness gauge, sometimes referred to as a degree gauge uses the simple device of having a much longer arm on the reading side to magnify any movement from the measuring side of the pivot. Thus a small gap between the tips becomes a much larger swing of the measuring arm and a reading can be taken from a suitably calibrated scale fixed to the opposite leg. This model will measure between 0 and 15mm in increments of 0.1mm and has a throat depth of 20mm. Taking the sharpness of the pointer into account and the effects of parallax you have a great value tool that will give you a reading with far more resolution than anything else in this price range. All steel construction, overall length 155mm.

Hanson Drill Powered Pencil Sharpener Hanson Carpenters Pencils

These traditional rectangular section carpenters pencils come from the USA and have been shown to be vastly superior to those from more Eastern parts of the globe. The shape allows them to be sharpened to a fine chisel point for accurate marking or to sit comfortably behind the ear! Available in a choice of hard, medium and soft grades. Overall length 180mm. It may seem a bit of a gadget but for those who have a lot of pencils constantly in use this can be a real time-saver. The sharpener is fitted with a standard 1/4 hex drive and just pops into the chuck of your cordless drill (or quick change system) to produce super-sharp pencil points in seconds. The Pro-Sharp comes with five round pencils with erasers on the ends. Definitely worth a try, you might just get hooked!

Axminster Double Bevel Marking Knife

This is an excellent design for any woodworker looking for the ideal marking knife. A knife line doesnt smudge and is far more precise being narrower than a pencil line. A great benefit is the cut line forms a register for a chisel or saw resulting in work that is more accurate. The 55 spear shaped blade with its double bevel means this knife is usable left- or right-handed, forwards or backwards whatever the situation dictates. The back of the blade is flat allowing the knife to run along a squares blade or straight edge. The high-speed tool steel blade holds a good edge. The wooden handle lets you grip the knife like a pencil. Flats on the side stop the tool from rolling off the bench. The simple tool is very effective, overall length 170mm, blade length 35mm.

Measuring Calipers
Axminster Proportional Dividers
These particular dividers will scale up or down with a high degree of accuracy. You could use a ruler and a calculator to work it out, but proportional dividers will do it for you automatically. By adjusting the joint, you can set the tool to any transfer ratio from 1:1 to 1:10. The distance between points at one end is in the chosen ratio to the points at the opposite end. The dividers have other functions. They will divide the circumference into equal segments, from 6 to 15. Using the GS mark gives the ratio of 1:1.618 hence GS for Golden Section. The mark Square Root 2, gives the length of the hypotenuse of a right angle triangle with two equal sides, or 1:1.414. This is an invaluable tool for transferring scale. Use for drafting, technical drawing and chart making. It has passivated-chrome finish with stainless steel points. The overall length is 185mm.

Veritas Direct Reading Caliper

Most turners calipers suffer from a common weakness; they must be read from the side, forcing you to cock your head every time you need to take a reading. Our direct-reading caliper is so named because the scale is situated where it should be, on the back end and reading vertically. The anodized aluminum arms make this caliper lightweight; yet rigid enough to withstand most regular turning demands. The graduated aluminum scale is etched, providing a good contrast with the anodized surface. Graduated in 32nds, 0 to 4 with a , throat capacity to cover the same range. A torsion spring provides light but constant closing force, and a brass thumbscrew allows you to set the caliper at any opening for comparative measurements. With the finger-shaped cut-outs, it is as comfortable as it is effective.

Vernier caliper not included

Axminster Vernier Caliper Depth Gauge Attachment

This vernier depth gauge attachment quickly converts your standard vernier caliper into a far more useful tool. The depth gauge attachment is precision made, once clamped to the base your vernier caliper is perpendicular to the base in both directions. The base forms a bridge across the reference surface allowing the depth rod to be lowered until it reaches the lower contact point. An accurate reading of the relative height differences can then be taken. It will fit all 150mm Axminster vernier calipers and any others with a stem width of 16mm.

All Steel Electronic Digital Caliper

A high precision digital readout caliper with a very solid all stainless steel construction. Zero can be set at any point along the range, and the display is easily switched from a metric to an imperial reading. Use for precise measurements of external, internal and depth from zero to 150mm(6 by 0.01mm(0.001).

Axminster Scriber Block Axminster Workshop Scriber

Two fine points of hardened steel, one bent at 90, make this just the job for marking out in confined spaces. 190mm long. Base dimensions 80 x 63mm, spindle length 300mm, scriber length 175mm. A fully hardened and ground base serves as an accurate reference surface. A machined Vee groove in the base allows the gauge to be used on curved surfaces. A Vee groove at the front end lets the spindle adjust to any angle above or below the base, allowing it to be used both as a height gauge and a depth gauge. Two retractable pins allow the gauge to be located against the edge of a surface plate or T-slot for linear work. A 1/4 (6.35 mm) hole in the spring loaded scriber holder allows a dial indicator to be attached. Grooves on the side of the base give a comfortable grip. The scriber is hardened to RC55-60 and is tapered for a good view of the work.

Axminster Optical Centre Punch

The Axminster Optical Centre Punch is the only way to achieve a precise punch location. It consists of a steel holder, two Perspex rods and two hardened steel punches (60 & 90). The Perspex rods are each engraved on the base, one with a cross hair, the other a bullseye target. The rods take light down and magnify at the same time. Once a rod is aligned with a mark, hold the base firmly and exchange the rod for a chosen punch. A light tap puts an indentation in the precise position. The base is 48mm in diameter with a slip resistant base, the punches and rods are 9.5mm diameter.

Axminster 3 Piece Automatic Centre Punch Set

This unique set comprises three brass-bodied automatic centre punches, each with a different and useful function. Included in the set: a standard automatic centre punch for general use, a selfcentring punch with a chamfered collar, designed to fit countersunk holes and therefore almost indispensable when marking out screw holes by transferring from one piece to another and a carpenters automatic centre punch with a selfcentring collar and an extended point to pass through boards up to 25mm thick; it has a gentler spring force so it will mark rather than damage a wood or plaster surface. Most useful tools for accurately positioning all sorts or drilling and fixing holes. Each is 15mm diameter by 125 or 150mm long, machined from brass with hardened steel points and exceptionally well made.

Granite Surface Plate

A grade A workshop granite plate with inspection grade accuracy and offering greater wear resistance than cast iron equivalents. Granite plates have good temperature stability, are resistant to corrosion, are nonmagnetic and distortion free and make an excellent surface for accurate marking out. The size of the plate is 400 x 635 x 100mm thick and the weight is 80kg. Flatness is 0.002mm. Due to the nature and weight of these plates, delivery is via Axminster transport only.

Toolmakers Vee Block

A universal vee block for mounting circular items when machining or marking out. The clamp is slightly narrower than the block, allowing the block to be laid on its side for machining features at right angles to each other. There is an adjustable stop fitted to the clamp screw which can be positioned so that it rests on the machine table to give additional support when machining with the block on its side. There are holes tapped in the base and the sides of the block for securing to angle plates, faceplates or other fixtures. Overall sizes are 47mm wide, 47mm high and 88mm long and maximum diameter with the clamp is 32mm. The thread size is 3/8 Whitworth.
