Brionna Crawford and Ramani Dayon class of 2015.

We both attend Ewing high school. We both enjoy science as well as math and teaching others. When we are not conducting experiments in the lab we enjoy being with friends as well as each other both on and off the track. While in this program we were struck with a question. We wondered which type of wood termites prefer when given an option.
Hypothesis: We predicted that the mahogany or the oak would have the most Materials: termites, container, sand, oak, pine, walnut, mahogany, poplar, scale, spray bottle filled with water Procedure: First-find an old piece of wood that contains termites Second- fill the container with an inch of sand and insert termites Third- weigh 2 pieces of each type of wood, label, and then soak in water
Basic set up of each wood with a decent amount of space between each

Fourth- after soaking for about 2 minutes or until damp insert into container Fifth- observe over a period of 5 days and collect data {at least 2x a day}

Data
Wood Oak Pine Walnut Mahogany Poplar Day1 7 15 19 38 1 Day2 0 5 10 20 0 Day3 12 0 5 8 0 Day4 5 0 9 9 0 Wood Oak Pine Walnut Mahogany Poplar Weight 3g 2g 4g 2g 2g

We also found that the younger termites where more attracted to pine and oak while the older and more mature termites like walnut and mahogany better. We think this is because pine and oak are softer woods while more mature like the harder woods such as walnut and mahogany. Conclusion: we came to the conclusion that termites prefer mahogany over all the woods that we put into the container Further questions: What attracted the termites to this wood?
