7 August 2012 THREE YEARS OF SUPPORT

GENEROUS supporters at Hollywood Social Club in Erdington have collected 972.43 for John Taylor Hospice through a series of events over the past year. The club in Kingsbury Road has designated John Taylor Hospice as its annual charity for the past three years and has raised more than 3,200 in that time. Much of the money raised is collected through the clubs open days which bring together people of all ages for a range of activities including live music and a bouncy castle. And this total has been bolstered by a string of events including skittles nights, quizzes and collections. Committee member John Holmes said the fundraising is all part of the clubs investment in its local community. We decided three years ago to adopt a charity and we wanted it to be somewhere local, he said. A lot of people knew the Hospice or knew people who had been there. We have more than 100 members but actually a lot of our support also comes from other people who attend our events. The club holds regular live music events and has recently started holding comedy nights for up-and-coming local talent. The club building was originally an Edwardian gentlemens residence and was left to the local community to be used as a gentlemens club. The club was opened to women in the 1960s and is now also used by families. Having held its 92nd AGM this year, Hollywood is affectionately known to members as the Big White House with a Bar. Hollywood Social Club has been a longstanding supporter of John Taylor Hospice and we are grateful for their decision to invest in us, said Hospice CEO Kate Phipps. We are keen to build ongoing links with groups and clubs in Birmingham and hope Hollywood Social Club will inspire others to contact us. More than 700 people have access to our services at any one time and it is thanks to support by organisations like Hollywood Social Club that we are able to continue to provide and grow those services. History
The John Taylor name has provided care and support for 100 years to the people of this city. John Taylor, a gynaecologist at the turn of the twentieth century, recognised the need for his dying patients to receive care in a different environment. Since 1948, when the house was purchased, the hospice has gone from strength to strength and new innovative palliative care services such as the Hospice at Home Team and the SPECIALIST MDT are at the innovative edge of palliative care.
