WHAT IS BIOMETRICS?
BIOMETRICS IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF STATISTICAL AND MATHEMATICAL METHODS APPLICABLE TO DATA ANALYSIS PROBLEMS IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES.
HISTORY
The word biometrics is derived from the Greek words Bio-life and Metrics-measure. Father of Biometrics technology-Alphonse Bertillon. Bertillionage Fingerprinting technology-Richard Edward Henry of Scotland Yard
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
False Acceptance Rate[FAR]-chance of accepting an intruder False Reject Rate[FRR]-probability of rejecting a genuine individual
BIOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS
Generally the are two types of biometric characteristics. They are:Physiological characteristics Behavioral characteristics
Parameters
Universality Uniqueness Permanence Collectability Performance Circumvention
MODES OF WORKING
A biometric system works in two modes. They are:Identification Verification
DIFFERENT METHODS
Fingerprinting Face recognition Voice recognition Iris/Retina recognition Signature test Keystroke dynamics DNA Palm printing Hand geometry Gait
APPLICATIONS
Forensic sciences-crime investigation and prison security. Used to prevent unauthorized access to ATMs, PCs, workstations and in research labs. As an effective tool to prevent hacking and other cyber crimes. In making medical insurance cards and driving licenses. Automobiles where biometrics can replace keys.
DISADVANTAGES
Data obtained during biometric enrollment can be misused. When thieves cannot get access to secure properties, they might harm the property and its owner. If a token or password is lost, it can be cancelled & replaced. This is not possible in a biometric system. It needs initial high investment, more time and careful maintenance.
