AFTER

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES PROGRAM FOR 2ND TO 5TH GRADE


Season 1: Monday, August 27 through Friday, October 19 No Activities on Thursday, August 30 due to our Elementary Open House

This is an optional program that meets after school so that our students have a chance to socialize and be involved in activities that are not offered during the regular school day. The school provides transportation for those who have paid the transportation fee. Season 1: August 27 to October 19 (8 weeks) Season 2: November 5 to January 18 (app. 6 weeks) Season 3: January 28 to March 22 (8 weeks) Season 4: April 8 to May 24 (7 weeks) All activities (except for swimming) are offered from 3:15 to 4:00

When creating activities for our ASAP, the Lincoln teachers try to offer activities that are well represented in each of our eight ASAP strands:

CHESS (GRADES 3 8)

Dear Lincoln community, My name is Ramesh Adhikary and I am an international Chess player. I have participated in international chess tournaments in both India and Bangladesh. I have received awards from The Nepal Chess Association. As we all know, Chess is one of the most popular indoor games in the world. And by playing regular chess it helps our concentration and problem solving. Chess is a natural counterpart to developing stronger skills in math and science. Dear Lincoln Community, My name is Ashok Kumar Lama. Taekwondo is an ancient martial art from Korea. Ive competed in several International Taekwondo Competitions. Learning Taekwondo not only improves hand-eye coordination, balance, and control, but its also a great way to stay healthy. Maximum students: 8 Season One Rates Mondays: 2200 rupees (8 weeks) Tuesdays: 2200 rupees (8 weeks) Fridays: 2200 rupees (8 weeks) If the child does not have the required uniform, then we will obtain one. The cost is 1000 rupees. GYMNASTICS (GRADE 2 GRADE 7) Dear Lincoln community, My name is Bhogendra Manandhar. My team and I will be offering gymnastics on Monday. BREAKDANCING (GRADE 3 TO GRADE 8)

Dear Lincoln community, My name is Nick Magar and I am offering break-dancing classes as an after school activity. Depending on who is interested I can teach grades 2 and up. I have taught breakdancing to mixed age groups before and am comfortable with that too. I have taught at three different dance studios around Kathmandu, Nepal-Break Dance Foundation (NBF), Steps and volunteer work at Y-stand. I have been practicing and teaching b-boy (breakdance) for four or five hours seven days a week for one and a half years. My skills are my qualification! Breakdancing is a unique art form. You can add your own style into it. You can express your feelings through it. It is very good for both mental and physical health. It requires creativity, strength, motivation and dedication. I intend to teach basic breakdancing for the first season. Then we can move up to more advanced levels and moves. Thank you very much. KARATE (GRADE 2 GRADE 8) Dilendra Vaidya and Om Shrestha are both 4th Dan Black Belts. Karate is a martial art that was developed in Japan after many centuries of evolution in the orient. It is an art that requires a great deal of both mental and physical discipline from its students. It is considered to be one of the finest forms of exercise in practice today. The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in winning the fight, but rather in the perfection of the student's character. As in all traditional Japanese arts, the object of Karate is found in the way in which people strive to develop themselves through the systematic training of their mind, body and spirit to the height of human potential. The complete mental control required to master the physical movements, and the effort and discipline put forth in the harmonizing of the mind and body, lay the foundation for the development of good citizenship and strong character. VIOLIN (GRADES 2 8) Dear Lincoln Community, I am Sunee Singh, Violin Teacher at Lincoln School for the after school activity. I am in the music field for last 15 years and have been teaching at Lincoln for last 9 years. I warmly welcome your kid/s to my class for this season. As violin is a part of one of the After School Activities, here I would like to mention some notes regarding the guidelines and disciplines for my class: If your child needs an instrument to buy or rent, please let me know, I will be glad to helping you out on both. If there is more than one student in the class, the charge will still be the same; the reason is that, the class needs more control, more concentration and energy. It you are willing to have the lessons at home, I am available on weekends and on weekdays too. The charge for home visiting will be different from the lessons at school. Im a professional drummer in the band Sound of Music. I have been giving piano lessons for the past two years at Lincoln. I took my piano lessons from Georgie Banks the father of the well know jazz pianist Louis Banks, one year music training conducted by The Royal Nepal Academy, participated in the several workshops "teaching music effectively" conducted at Kathmandu jazz conservatory by U.S cultural Envoy, Dr Gene Aitken. Besides teaching I am also active as music arranger and composer for documentaries. Besides piano I will teach music theory. You can meet me personally if you want any other information. Ive been playing guitar since 1965, I was an A class musician for Radio Nepal in the 1970s, and Ive been teaching guitar at Lincoln for 26 years. Students

The guitar club will teach the basic techniques of strumming and picking to various rhythms while you learn to read music and sing to your favorite songs. Guitar students will be part of a guitar troupe that will perform for parents and students. So, bring your guitar and let's rock! All levels are welcome. Instructors: C. B. SUNDAY MORNING SWIM CLUB (GRADES 2-5)


This will begin on Sunday, September 2nd and once again be led by Kathy Shrestha. We use the pool at Phora Durbar early on Sunday mornings. Members use the pool early, so we have to swim from 8:00 to 9:30. This activity is offered to middle school as well and has proven to be a great time to get to know the older kids. Although the use of the pool is free, the Lincoln bus service (regardless of whether you paid the regular transportation fee or not) will cost 1500 rupees per season. Maximum: 10 students *Tentative offer dependent on enrollment and transportation availability.

SHAPING WORLD LEADERS


The Leader In Me (grades 3-5) The Leader in Me is Lincoln's Elementary Student Leadership Team. During our weekly meeting time, we will work to develop personal leadership skills, organize community building and service activities, and promote student voice and responsibility throughout the school. We encourage those who sign up to consider remaining in this activity throughout the school year; it will be offered every season. Fridays, maximum students: 20 Yearbook (grades 4-5) Make history and memories! Be a part of year book! We need students to help design the elementary year book pages. Learn all sorts of cool new ideas and tools. Yearbook is a yearlong Friday commitment, and its worth it! We would love to have you, and your friends will love the book that you design! Fridays, maximum: 8 students Middle School Roots & Shoots (open to 5th grade only) Have fun doing something positive! In Roots and Shoots, you'll not only have fun, you'll make a difference too! Roots & Shoots engages and inspires youth through community service and service learning. Founded by famous Primatologist and UN Messenger of Peace, Dr. Jane Goodall, this global program emphasizes the principle that knowledge leads to compassion, which inspires action. The Roots and Shoots group at Lincoln School shows care and concern in three areas: the human community, animals, and the environment (Thursdays).

MOVEMENT
Speed Stacking (grades 2 4) Speed Stacking is a fast, fun game of coordination and concentration. Race against the clock as your hands build and tear down pyramids with cups. Tuesdays, Maximum students: 8 Fusion Dance (grades 2 5) Western, Nepali, and Indian dance, all rolled into one! Thursdays, maximum: 8 students

Junior Swim Team (grades 4 - 5) Children will train as competitive swimmers. It is essential that the children already know how to swim. This is different than swim lessons. Children will build endurance by swimming reps of the four competitive strokes: breaststroke, crawl stroke, backstroke, and butterfly. Tuesdays and / or Thursdays: 3:15 to 5:30, maximum students: 10 (If you have not paid the transportation fee, then there is a transportation cost. If your child signs up once a week, then the cost will be 1200 rps for the season, and if your child signs up twice a week and is accepted, then the cost will be 2400 rps.)

Learn-To-Swim-With-Kathy-Shrestha (grades 2 - 5)* So you dont know how to swim but want to learn? Then join Kathy Shrestha and her team of trained professionals on Friday afternoons at Phora Durbar! 21ST CENTURY MEDIA


Foreign Film Club (grades 3 5) We will watch children's films from a variety of different places around the world. We will view age appropriate films from places such as Korea, China, Mexico, Mongolia, France, and India. Many of the films will take at least 2 weeks to complete, as most are about 90 minutes long. Reading skills will be implemented as the films are voiced in the language of each country and subtitled in English. Tuesdays, Maximum students: 15 Garage Band For Beginners (grades 3 5) Garage Band is a fun and powerful music-making program for the mac that requires no musical theory to create great songs. Students will experiment with how musical loops fit together to make original songs and make their own music. Fridays, Maximum students: 10 Computer Keyboarding (grades 2 5) Learn how to type! Tuesdays

BRAIN

Library Time (grades 2 5) Supervised library time to read, draw, or do homework. Thursdays, Maximum students: 12 Nepali Language (grades 3 5) Learn Nepali language the fun way, and feel confident and inspired in your host country! Fridays
