Attention third grade families: You may have noticed that some of the math homework requires solving

problems using the place value method. We will be working on this strategy for solving addition problems all week. Feel free to refer to this guide to help your child with his/her homework. On the other side of this paper you will find a model for the home reading response journal. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask. As always thank you for your support!

The Place Value Method Notes

Example:

32 + 13 = ?

Step 1: Underline the digits in the ones place & draw a box around the digits in the tens place. : 3 2+ 1 3

Step 2: Pull out the tens and add them together. 30 + 10 = 40 Step 3: Pull out the ones and add them together. Step 4: Circle the sums (answers). Step 5: Add together the parts that you circle. The sum is you final answer. 40 + 5 = 45 2+3=5

Example 2:

41 + 18 = ?
4 1+ 1 8 40 + 10 = 50 1+8=9

Step 5:

50 + 9 = 59
