The Johad model

Notes on the Johad model to accompany the book Realizing Community Futures (J. Vanclay, R. Prabhu & F. Sinclair, Earthscan, 2006, ISBN 1 84407 383 1) To run this model, you will need Simile version 4.5 or higher. Simile is available from www.simulistics.com Once Simile is installed on your computer, you can run the model by double-clicking on the file Johad.sml, provided with this documentation. This will open Simile, and display the model. The image that you see is not quite the same as Figure 5.4 of the book, because the wallpaper in the submodels has been omitted (instead, weve used coloured backgrounds for clarity), and an extra submodel has been added to the right of the model. This additional submodel Standardize weather provides the ability to ensure that successive simulations experience exactly the same weather. This was necessary, because the weather pattern is based on random numbers, and unless the weather is pre-set at model initiation, then the sequence of random numbers may vary because of other components of the model (e.g., random numbers used to predict is a tank is destroyed). Apart from this small addition, Johad.sml is the same as the model described in the book, and is the model that was used to create Figures 6.1 and 6.6. To run the model, you need to press the run button ( ) on the top menu bar. This should open a new window called johad execution. To re-create Figures 6.1 and 6.6, press the load button ( ) and select johad.shf You model should now be set up with three display sheets, each marked with tabs that indicate their content: Sliders, Figure 6.1, and Figure 6.6. To re-create these figures and variations of them, you may need to reset ( ) the model, and run ( that you can vary the sliders to explore various scenarios. ) it again. Note
