Zachary Zimmer Westfield Middle School Finding Effective Strategies to Teaching Required World Religion Units in Seventh Grade Social Studies Classroom What is it for? To help Westfield seventh grade social studies teachers with the teaching of world religions in the classroom. Religion is part of the seventh grade curriculum and is part of the ISTEP testing in the spring. How are students involved in the study? Students will be observed in class during the month of October as we make our way through our Monotheistic Religions unit. Classes will use multiple techniques to promote learning and discussion, in which their social studies teachers will observe. Students will be asked to take optional, anonymous surveys at the end of lessons to share their opinions on the effectiveness of the lesson and the techniques used. They will only be asked to fill out a survey if they turn in their signed student/parent consent forms. Will students identities be used in the study? Absolutely Not. All individual names and information will be anonymous in the study as students will be asked not to put their names on the surveys they turn in. Can students get out of the study? Yes. Students can stop filling out the surveys at any time. They will continue to learn the curriculum, but will have no participation in the research study during the month of October.
