The Sixth Big Lie: Noblesse Oblige

Noblesse oblige. Privilege entails responsibility. Let the old Etonians lead you to a new and better world. You know you can trust us. I suspect some of it may be sincere. Such is our potential for self-deception that this multi-privileged clique probably believes it's got to the top through hard work and endurance, and so has no hesitation in recommending such self-sacrificing dedication to others. They have been pampered since birth, and right through adulthood, and the privileges that they have had are not accessible to all, no matter how hard others may try. That is the nature of privilege. If this mob were truly committed to a sharing community, or even to justice, they would make the opportunity for social mobility the key criterion by which all policy should be judged. That is, I'm afraid, an idle dream, because what they are committed to, at best subliminally, is the perpetuation and protection of their privilege.
