Protagonist vs. Antagonist Short stories use few characters. One character is clearly central to the story with all major events having some importance to this character - he/she is the PROTAGONIST. The character who is against the main character is called the ANTAGONIST.

A protagonist is, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, the leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text. An antagonist is a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary.

The Protagonist
The protagonist is the main character in a story, novel, drama, or other literary work; the character that the reader or audience empathizes with.

The Antagonist
The antagonist is the villain in the story whose actions work against the protagonist or main character in the story. The antagonist's role is to defeat, destroy or make life difficult for the protagonist.

The Characteristics of a Person


In order for a story to seem real to the reader its characters must seem real. Characterization is the information the author gives the reader about the characters themselves. Characters are convincing if they are: consistent, motivated, and life-like (resemble real people). The author may reveal a character through direct characterization or indirect characterization.

Individual well - rounded, many sided and complex personalities. Dynamic- developing, many sided personalities that change, for better or worse, by the end of the story. Static - Stereotype, have one or two characteristics that never change and are emphasized e.g. brilliant detective, scrooge, cruel stepmother, wicked witch etc.
