WHAT IS PULSE OXIMETRY??

A technique for blood gas analysis Measures Oxygen saturation in blood Done using optoelectronics Due to sophistication of electronics, Pulse Oximetry has become popular

NEED FOR PO
A method to measure gas levels in particular oxygen in blood was necessary Previous known methods were Invasive How to develop a quick and non-invasive way to do blood gas analysis??

PRINCIPLE
Absorption detection is the underlying principle 2 wavelengths are used for absorption measurement:660nm and 910nm The absorption(Optical Density) for oxyhaemoglobin and de-oxygenated haemoglobin varies significantly at these wavelengths

WORKING
The instrument uses 2 Photodetector-LED pair Previously placed in the ear, now on fingertips Provides a translucent medium for measurement Ratio of absorption at different wavelength determined Oxygen sat. level due to different color Uses Beer-Lambert law

APPLICATIONS
As described earlier, used in Blood gas determination Anaesthesia Patient Monitoring in infants, ambulatory patients

ISSUES
Accuracy Contaminants:CO2,CO,MethaHb etc Poor Signal, attenuation Skin pigmentation Other..
